My Milf Conqueror System

Chapter 262: The Cold War

[Jake's POV]

The streets of the Outer Harbour were unrecognizable compared to a month ago.

I walked down the Avenida de Amizade with Ethan, the mid-morning sun burning off the coastal fog. The fog didn't lift all at once. It tore in pieces. It hung in the air like wet gauze, then the sun cut through it and it vanished. Where it brushed my face it was cold and damp. Thirty seconds later my skin was dry and warm.

The heavy, oppressive atmosphere of fear that used to choke the district was gone. You could feel it in your lungs. Before, the air felt thick. Like you were breathing through something dirty. Now it was clean. It smelled like salt from the harbor, fresh bread from a bakery, and exhaust from the first buses of the day.

The street vendors had their stalls open wide. The canvas awnings were bright red, yellow, green. They snapped in the light breeze. Fruit was piled in pyramids. Mangoes with soft skin. Oranges that smelled sharp when you got close. Dragonfruit cut open, the white and black seeds glistening. A radio played from one stall. Old pop music. Tinny, but cheerful. A kid ran past us chasing a balloon. The string whipped in the air.

The local shops were packed with tourists. Their voices filled the street. Different languages. Laughter. The _ding_ of cash registers. The rustle of shopping bags. Cameras clicked. People were taking pictures of murals that used to be covered in gang tags.

The Golden Koi enforcers patrolling the blocks wore tailored suits instead of street clothes. Black, fitted, no wrinkles. White shirts buttoned to the top. No gold chains. No visible tattoos. They didn't carry baseball bats or openly display their firearms. They looked like private security, professional and disciplined. Their shoes were polished. They walked in pairs, eyes up, hands loose. One of them nodded at me as we passed. No words.

"Collections are up another fifteen percent this week," Ethan noted, checking a digital ledger on his phone. The screen was bright against the sun. He had to shade it with his hand. He swiped, and the numbers scrolled. "The vendors are actually happy to pay the quotas. They know the Golden Koi is keeping the independent gangs and the petty thieves out of the district."

He locked the phone. _Click._ Slid it into his pocket. The fabric made a soft sound.

"Peace is profitable," I said, keeping my eyes scanning the rooftops and the alleyways out of habit. The rooftops were flat, concrete, empty. Laundry lines. A few AC units. The alley mouths were dark rectangles between buildings. My eyes checked them anyway. Old habits don't die. "When people feel safe, they spend money. When they spend money, the syndicate thrives."

The sun was hot on the back of my neck now. The asphalt gave off heat. It shimmered a little.

"It feels too quiet," Ethan muttered, slipping the phone back into his pocket. "Han is gone. Lin is in a maximum-security cell awaiting trial. Zhao is a ghost. We own the lower half of the city, and nobody is taking a shot at us."

His voice was low. Like he didn't want to jinx it.

The street was loud around us. Vendors calling out. Tourists talking. But there was no tension in it. No one was watching their back.

"They aren't taking shots on the street," I corrected. "The war has moved."

I could feel it. Not with my eyes. With my teeth. That faint buzz.

I tapped my earpiece. The plastic was warm from my skin. "Overwatch, give Ethan the morning briefing."

"It's a digital warzone, Liam," Nia's voice crackled over the comms. It was right in my ear. Close. Under her voice was the constant sound of her typing. Fast, rhythmic clicks. Like rain. "The Imperial Shadows have been probing our external firewalls for the last seventy-two hours. They aren't using brute-force attacks. They're using highly sophisticated, military-grade infiltration algorithms. They're looking for a backdoor into the Jade Palace's financial routing network."

Seventy-two hours. Three full days. Someone had been testing our locks while we slept.

"Can they get in?" Ethan asked, his brow furrowing. The line between his eyes went deep.

"Not through the external network," Claire chimed in. Her voice was steadier. Technical. "Nia and I have the Golden Koi's servers locked down tighter than a federal reserve. But the Empress isn't stupid. If she realizes she can't slice us remotely, she'll transition to physical infiltration."

The sun felt less warm.

"Bugs," Ethan realized. The word came out flat.

"Exactly," I said. "The Jade Palace processes millions of dollars in clean revenue every week. It's the beating heart of our laundering operation. If the Imperial Shadows manage to plant a physical tap on the casino's internal servers, they can track the money back to the street-level collections. They'll have the evidence they need to dismantle the Golden Koi legally."

Millions. Every week. A paper trail that started at a fruit stand and ended in a vault. If they found one thread, they could pull the whole thing.

"We have fifty men guarding the Jade Palace," Ethan pointed out.

"Fifty men trained to look for card counters and armed robbers," I said. "They aren't trained to spot an Imperial Shadow disguised as a high-roller or a maintenance worker. We need to sweep the casino."

A delivery truck rolled past. It smelled like diesel. The driver was whistling.

We reached the end of the avenue, where a sleek black Maybach was waiting at the curb. The paint was deep. It reflected the sky and the buildings. The driver stood by the rear door. He didn't speak. He just opened it.

The inside smelled like leather and cold air conditioning. The seats were cool through my pants.

"Let's go to work," I said, opening the door.

The door closed with a solid _thunk_. Heavy. Final.

The car pulled away from the curb. In the rearview mirror, the Avenida kept moving. People shopping. Enforcers walking. A city that didn't know it was already at war again.
