My Milf Conqueror System

Chapter 304: Mercenary's Ledger

[Jake's POV]

The basement of the Golden Koi safehouse was built for conversations no one was supposed to hear.

Concrete walls. No windows. One steel door with three deadbolts. A single bulb hung from the ceiling and threw a hard circle of light onto the table.

Thomas Vance sat in that circle.

His hands were zip-tied to a heavy steel chair. His ankles were zip-tied to the legs. He wasn't leaning forward. He wasn't testing the restraints. He was sitting perfectly straight, eyes moving slowly across the room. Cataloging.

A professional intelligence contractor assessing a compromised operational environment.

I sat across from him. A cup of black coffee sat on the table between us. Steam had stopped rising.

Ethan stood by the door. Rifle slung across his chest. He hadn't blinked in two minutes.

"You have a very efficient security apparatus, Mr. Reed," Vance said. His British accent was smooth, unhurried, despite the zip-ties. "The floodlights, the elevated firing positions... it was a textbook kill box. I truly underestimated the Golden Koi."

"You underestimated the intelligence network," I corrected. I picked up the coffee. It was still hot. I took a sip. Bitter. "You assumed we were a street syndicate. You didn't expect us to be monitoring the municipal traffic grids. You didn't expect us to have people on the rooftops before you even left your vehicle. Your own ego fid you in."

Vance offered a faint, conceding nod. "A costly assumption on my part."

He shifted his weight. The chair made a small sound against the concrete. "So, what happens now? I assume you aren't going to hand me over to Superintendent Cho. Mercenaries with my background tend to attract federal attention, and federal attention is bad for local business. And I doubt that is the reason you went out of your way to have me brought here."

"You're a businessman, Vance," I said. I set the cup down. "You sell intelligence and tactical execution. The Empress bought your services to hijack my transit trucks. The contract failed. I want to know what her contingency plan is."

Vance smiled. It was thin. It didn't reach his eyes. "Client confidentiality is the cornerstone of my profession. If I burn my employers, I lose my reputation. No one hires a contractor who talks. My value is discretion."

"If you don't burn your employer, you lose your life," Ethan pointed out from the doorway. His voice was even. No threat. Just fact.

"I don't think so," Vance replied. He looked at Ethan, then back to me. He was measuring us. "You're a pragmatist, Reed. I've read the after-action reports. Killing me creates a mess. It draws the attention of my firm in London. Interpol inquiries. Diplomatic pressure. You want information, and I want a flight out of Macau. We can make a transaction. Clean."

I studied him for a moment. He was right about the mess. A body in a Golden Koi basement meant questions we couldn't afford right now.

"The transaction is your life for the Empress's playbook," I said. My voice was flat and unyielding. "No hedging. No half-truths. If the intelligence is actionable, you walk out of here and take the first ferry to Hong Kong. New passport. New name. If you lie to me, I'll put you in a shipping container bound for the Mariana Trench."

Vance weighed the threat. His eyes locked onto mine. He was looking for bluff. For doubt.

He didn't find either.

He exhaled once through his nose and leaned forward slightly against the zip-ties.

"Song Mei is terrified of the Julian Croft holding company," Vance said. "She knows the two hundred million dollars came from the Jade Palace. The timing was too precise. The money hit the Trust forty-eight hours before her Cotai development was going to default on its loans. But she can't prove it. The digital firewall your people built in Singapore is flawless. Her analysts spent a week tearing it apart and found nothing but legitimate tech investments. Clean shell companies. Clean invoices. Clean tax records going back three years."

"If she can't prove it, she can't break the partnership," I noted.

"She doesn't need to break the partnership," Vance corrected. "She just needs to freeze the capital."

He let that sit for a second.

"She hired my firm to find physical evidence of money laundering at the Jade Palace. Surveillance photos. Transfer records. A paper trail she could hand to the authorities. When the transit hijack failed tonight, she initiated her secondary protocol immediately."

"Which is?" I asked.

"She's bypassing the local authorities entirely," Vance explained. "No more dealing with Superintendent Cho. No more municipal courts that can be bought. She's using her political contacts in Beijing to trigger an international financial audit of the Song Dynasty Trust. She's going to voluntarily invite the federal regulators to examine her own books. Full disclosure. Open door. Complete cooperation."

The sheer audacity of the move hit me like a physical blow.

Ethan frowned in confusion from the doorway. "She's auditing herself? Why would she invite the feds into her own house? That's suicide."

"Because her house is clean," I realized. The tactical implications cascaded through my mind one after another. "The Song Dynasty Trust's primary accounts are spotless. Real estate. Casinos. Hotels. Government infrastructure contracts. All legitimate. All taxed. The only dirty money in her entire portfolio is the two hundred million from Julian Croft."

I looked at Vance.

"If the federal regulators audit the Trust, they'll trace the equity injection back to Singapore. They won't stop at the first shell company. They'll keep digging. Deeper than her analysts ever could. They'll map the entire laundering pipeline back to the Jade Palace. They'll expose the accounts, freeze the assets, and issue an Interpol warrant for Julian Croft."

"Exactly," Vance said. He nodded once. "She's burning her own portfolio manager to expose you. It's a scorched-earth tactic. She takes the loss on her own books to cut your throat. The audit begins in forty-eight hours."
