Chapter 355: Boundaries Between Past and Forever
"Unbelievable. Okay, answer me this—when did you find out about everything? And when did you even have the chance to meet my mother?"
Adrian tilted his head, looking at Matteo with a mischievous glint. "Beg me first and give me a kiss... then maybe I’ll tell you."
Matteo stared at him for a moment before shaking his head with an amused look. "You little brat," he murmured affectionately. "Alright, fine."
He leaned over, pulled Adrian closer, and kissed him softly. When they finally parted, Matteo kept him close, his voice turning into a gentle and coaxing murmur as he started showering him with pet names. "Please, my angel."
Adrian tried to hold back his reaction.
"Come on, sweetheart. Tell me."
Adrian pressed his lips together, but Matteo wasn’t giving up.
"My baby... my love... my heartbeat, please tell me?" he pleaded, pressing gentle kisses along Adrian’s jawline and temple, using every sweet word in his vocabulary to wear him down.
That finally broke Adrian. He giggled, a bright, bubbly sound escaping his lips as a heavy blush dusted his cheeks. "Fine, fine, fine! Stop, okay, I’ll tell you!"
Matteo pulled back just enough to look at him, his eyes shining with victory. "Alright, I’m listening."
Adrian took a breath, a fond smile softening his features. "The very first time I met your mom was when she first came to Central City. Charles came to pick me up from home, but he didn’t tell me where we were going. I had no idea he was taking me to your mother’s house until we arrived and I stepped inside. That was when I met her for the first time, and she was the one who told me everything, how her stubborn, brooding son had been stalking me and watching over me like a guardian angel every night, long before you finally found the courage to show your face to me in person."
Matteo immediately shook his head. "I wasn’t stalking you, baby. I was protecting you."
Adrian gave him a look.
Matteo sighed, unable to defend himself any further. "Okay, fine. I was coming to see you every night. I just wanted to make sure you were safe. It felt necessary back then. Even when you didn’t know I was there watching from afar, I was happy just knowing you were safe. And now, being able to watch over you openly... it feels even better."
A soft expression settled over Adrian’s face. "But look at you now. You achieved your goal. You protected me... and somehow, you ended up capturing my heart too. You own my heart, Matteo."
Matteo’s expression softened. "Yes, baby. And I’ll love and cherish your heart forever. I’ll never give you a reason to regret giving it to me."
Overcome with affection, Adrian pulled Matteo closer and kissed him deeply, letting the kiss linger for a moment before they finally parted.
When they parted, Adrian rested his head against Matteo’s chest.
Looking down lovingly at his fiancé, Matteo smiled softly before shifting his attention back to the road ahead as their car smoothly carried them toward the exclusive tailoring atelier for their suit fittings.
Not long after, the car pulled up in front of the elegant boutique. Their lead bodyguard immediately stepped forward and opened the rear door for them.
"Thank you," Matteo said as he stepped out, then reached back for Adrian’s hand.
Together, they walked hand in hand into the luxurious boutique, where the master tailor and a couple of senior assistants were already waiting for them. Knowing Matteo had called ahead to let them know they were on a tight schedule, they had everything prepared with absolute precision.
The tailor greeted them warmly, guiding them straight to the private fitting rooms to try on their initial basted suits. Since it was only the first fitting, the garments were far from finished—temporary stitches held everything together while the tailor checked the proportions, marked the areas that needed adjusting, and made notes for the final construction.
After stepping out of the fitting rooms, they left the tailor to review his notes. Adrian lingered in the main showroom, his eyes wandering over the stunning racks of ready-to-wear luxury garments on display. Matteo, meanwhile, apologized and excused himself to use the restroom. He disappeared down the hallway while Adrian continued browsing.
He already knew Matteo’s wardrobe far too well. No matter how many different colors and styles Adrian had bought for him since they started dating, Matteo somehow always found his way back to black. Black suits. Black coats. Black shirts. Black everything.
Adrian shook his head as he ran his fingers over a few of the overcoats.
"Not this time," he muttered to himself.
They were getting married. It was time to force a little color into Matteo’s life.
He picked out two suits for himself and two that he thought Matteo would look good in, then moved toward the overcoat section. Instead of reaching for the usual black, Adrian deliberately chose a few pieces in different shades—deep charcoal, navy, and rich brown.
He was still comparing two of them when he glanced toward the hallway.
Matteo was taking a while.
Adrian checked the time on his phone, then looked toward the restroom again.
He turned to the bodyguard standing a polite distance away and tilted his head. "What is taking him so long in there? Did he fall in?"
Before the bodyguard could answer, the low murmur of voices echoed from the hallway. Matteo soon appeared from the direction of the restrooms—and, to Adrian’s complete surprise, he wasn’t alone. A sharply dressed man with neatly styled hair was walking beside him, the two of them casually talking as they approached.
Adrian paused, his eyes narrowing slightly as he watched them. Who on earth is that?
Matteo spotted him and immediately walked over, looking slightly apologetic. "Babe, I’m so sorry for keeping you waiting—"
Adrian didn’t let him finish. He leaned closer, his gaze shifting to the stranger standing a few feet behind Matteo.
"Who is this?"
Matteo blinked, then glanced back at the man before looking at Adrian. "Ah... well, this is Felix. My ex. We just happened to run into each other near the restrooms."
Adrian’s eyebrows lifted. An ex? Here? Of all places?
Before Adrian could say anything, Matteo reached out and gently tapped his arm.
"Don’t overthink it, okay? I was literally just taking my time in there, and he happened to walk out of the private lounge next to the restroom. That’s all. Don’t overthink it, babe."
Adrian looked at him. "I didn’t say anything."
"Your face did," Matteo replied.
Before Adrian could come up with a suitably sarcastic response, Felix stepped forward with a confident smile.
"Well, I’m done with my alterations anyway. Matteo... can I have your number? Maybe we could catch up sometime, like old times?"
The question hung in the air.
Adrian stared at him for a moment, clearly caught off guard by the sheer boldness of it. But instead of saying anything, he simply stepped closer to Matteo and slipped his hand around his arm, his fingers resting possessively against his chest.
Matteo didn’t hesitate. His arm immediately went around Adrian’s waist, pulling him closer as his expression turned serious.
"Felix," he said calmly, "this is my fiancé, Adrian."
Adrian’s eyes flickered with satisfaction at the introduction. He slowly lifted his left hand, letting the light catch the engagement ring on his finger.
Matteo continued calmly, "And I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to exchange numbers with you. I hope you understand."
Adrian decided to make the message even clearer. "Baby, have you invited him to our wedding?"
Matteo looked at him, immediately catching on. "Not yet."
Adrian turned toward Felix with a perfectly polite expression. "Mr. Felix, you’re invited to our wedding."
Felix looked slightly surprised.
Adrian continued, "Oh, wait... we don’t have the invitation cards with us yet. That’s too bad. You know, they won’t let you into the venue without one."
Felix blinked, finally realizing what Adrian was doing.
Matteo’s lips twitched as he tried not to laugh.
Felix gave a small, knowing smile. "Alright. I understand."
He glanced between the two of them before giving a polite nod.
"Congratulations to you both. I genuinely wish you a happy marriage."
Adrian smiled sweetly. "Thank you."
Felix gave Matteo one last look before turning and walking away.
Adrian watched him disappear before slowly looking back at Matteo.
Matteo raised an eyebrow.
"What?" Adrian asked innocently, as though he had done nothing wrong.
Matteo murmured against his skin, pressing a lingering kiss to Adrian’s jaw. "You’re terrifying when you’re jealous, baby."
Adrian gave him a pointed look. "Then you better learn to stay away from your exes. Don’t even stop to greet them when you see them. Consider it cheating. You’re going to be a married man soon, and from now on, your exes should be your greatest enemies. Don’t let what happened today happen again."
Matteo looked at him for a moment before nodding. "Alright, baby. I agree." A teasing look crossed his face. "But you have to admit, you were damn jealous just now. You were practically possessive of me."
Adrian scoffed, resting his hands against Matteo’s chest as he pushed him back just enough to give him a mock-serious glare. "Me? Jealous? Please. I was just making sure your little ghost from the past knew his place."
"Oh, he knew his place," Matteo agreed immediately. His expression softened as he cupped Adrian’s face in his hands. "Because my heart, my soul, and every part of me belongs entirely to you. You’re the only one I want. Forever."
Adrian’s stern expression softened at once. He leaned up and pressed a quick kiss to Matteo’s lips. "Good choice, Mr. Marcone. Now, come on. Let’s finish trying on the outfits I picked for us before you run into another ghost."
Matteo smiled, following right behind him as they headed back toward the fitting rooms.
As they walked down the private corridor, Adrian glanced back over his shoulder, a playful look in his eyes. "You know, you should really be glad you don’t have a line of exes to fight off when it comes to me. I’ve only ever been yours."
Matteo chuckled, closing the remaining distance between them in two long strides. He wrapped an arm securely around Adrian’s waist, pulling him closer. "Oh, believe me, I know how lucky I am."
Adrian rolled his eyes. "And for the record, my late wife was my first woman, and you’re my first man. I knew how to reserve myself for the right person, unlike you and your revolving door of casual history."
Matteo leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Adrian’s temple, his arm tightening gently around his waist. "From now on, my body, my heart, and my entire life are yours. No ghosts, no history. Just us."
Adrian leaned into his warmth, his expression softening as he looked up into Matteo’s dark, devoted eyes. A quiet sense of peace settled over him.
"I trust you," Adrian whispered.
They exchanged a warm look before heading back to the fitting rooms to try on the suits and overcoats Adrian had picked out. One by one, they tried everything on, and each piece fit perfectly.
Once they were satisfied with their selections, they settled the bill and said their goodbyes before walking outside.
Their lead bodyguard opened the rear door of the waiting car, and they slid into the back seat. Moments later, the driver pulled away, carrying them home as they talked excitedly about their upcoming wedding.
In the middle of the conversation, Matteo’s phone suddenly rang.
He glanced down at the screen...
