Chapter 9 : Chapter 9
Chapter 9. Is It Funny? Is It His Fault for Being Only a Captain?
Early the next morning.
Dawn had only just replaced the night. The morning air carried a faint fragrance, and the passing breeze insisted that it had not brushed past flowers.
Instead, it had passed the colorful underwear hanging on the racks outside the maids’ dormitory.
Knock. Knock knock.
“Come in.”
Click...
The door opened a narrow crack before quickly closing again, making almost no noise.
With her blonde hair tied neatly behind her head and calm green eyes, the Head Maid Vya stepped into the study at the summons.
The person she faced was Vivian, who clearly had not yet fully escaped the grasp of sleep.
“Good morning, Young Lady. Did you summon me because something urgent has happened?” Vya asked smoothly while pulling the curtains open.
Vivian sat behind the desk, rubbing her eyes. Her voice was still drowsy.
“If nothing happened, why would I call you? Stop asking pointless questions.”
She gave a small yawn.
“I want to ask you about someone.”
“Oh? Who?”
“Recently, there is a newcomer who arrived about a week ago, named…” Vivian paused.
She suddenly remembered that the woman had never told her name.
“Tsk. Anyway, she has white hair, is quite tall, and just like you, she has a lump of useless extra flesh on her chest.”
The moment the words left her mouth, Vya already knew who she meant.
White hair. Tall. Large chest.
There was no second maid in Morninglight Manor who perfectly matched those traits. The others were either white-haired but petite, or tall but flat-chested.
However, one thing confused her.
Why would the Young Lady suddenly ask about someone—and specifically about Eve? Had Eve done something wrong, or perhaps offended the Young Lady?
Vya nodded and stood respectfully beside the desk.
“Young Lady is correct. That girl’s name is Eve.”
“She is steady and careful in her work, and she learns very quickly. Among the recent batch of newcomers, she has performed the best and has made almost no mistakes,” Vya continued, speaking faster and faster as if she were eager to defend Eve.
“If she has somehow offended the Young Lady, then as the Head Maid I am willing to accept responsibility for failing to guide her properly. After all, she is new, and there may still be areas where—”
“Stop. I said stop,” Vivian interrupted, raising a hand with an irritated frown. “Why are you in such a hurry? Did I ask you how she performs?”
As if she would not know.
Last night had been more than an offense. That woman had practically molested her.
“Apologies, Young Lady. I spoke too much.”
Vivian waved her hand dismissively. Early in the morning, she did not feel like losing her temper.
“Fine, fine. You have been with me for so long, yet you still make such basic mistakes. Let it not happen again.”
Like a miniature adult, she rested her chin on her hand and fell into thought.
After a long pause, she raised her head again.
“Did you recruit her?”
“No, Young Lady. She was personally recommended by the family head.”
Vivian immediately sat upright.
“What?! Then why did you not tell me?!”
“Young Lady, during my routine report on Eve’s first day of employment, I already informed you. Your exact reply at the time was: ‘Oh, whatever. It does not matter. I cannot be bothered to deal with it.’”
Vya bent slightly and repeated the words clearly.
The room fell silent for a moment.
“Did I really say that?”
“Yes.”
Vivian instantly had nothing more to say.
The small burst of emotion she had just felt vanished completely. She nodded awkwardly but stubbornly refused to concede.
“Even so, it is still your fault. Could you not think more carefully? When I say ‘it does not matter,’ does that really mean it does not matter?”
Vya bowed her head even lower.
“I failed to consider it properly. Please punish me, Young Lady.”
Vivian snorted lightly but had no intention of truly pursuing the matter.
What interested her more was the information Vya had just revealed.
The moment she realized this arrangement had once again come from that old man, Vivian felt her irritation rise.
It must be another spy sent to watch her.
Things had barely settled for a few days before a new one arrived. Did that old man truly distrust her so much? Or did he think that his daughter could only cause trouble and therefore had to be monitored constantly?
The frustration lodged in her chest made it difficult for her to breathe.
Yet soon, the memory of those eyes from last night—and the woman’s openly provocative behavior—reappeared vividly in her mind.
Unlike the previous watchers, who were either trembling with fear or harboring ulterior motives, this Eve was different.
Very different.
Vivian could not quite explain the feeling.
It was not merely the woman’s outstanding beauty and figure—though she was indeed the most striking maid Vivian had ever seen, even surpassing many so-called noble ladies.
More importantly, there was a certain aura about Eve.
One might even call it unrestrained.
Standing before Vivian, the woman seemed to lack the awe that others displayed.
That stirred Vivian’s interest greatly.
A powerful desire to conquer and control began to grow within her—especially when she recalled that she had actually been at a disadvantage last night. Her competitive spirit immediately ignited.
The toys she had dealt with before were all too dull.
They broke too easily.
But this one…
Vivian could almost imagine the process.
Gradually taming someone who appeared calm yet secretly rebellious—until they became completely obedient to her, even willing to kneel and kiss her toes.
That would surely be an immensely satisfying achievement.
She silently swore that this Eve would pay the price for last night’s offense.
With that thought, she made her decision.
“Enough. Let us forget the past. Go make arrangements. Starting today, that Eve will serve as my personal maid.”
“Ah?”
“What? Do you have objections?”
“Of course not. I understand. I will guide her carefully.”
Though Vya was somewhat confused by the situation, years of professional experience allowed her to calm herself quickly.
In truth, she had originally intended to suggest this herself and had even prepared for the possibility of being rejected.
But since the Young Lady seemed to have the same idea, everything was settled.
Little sister Eve, do not disappoint my expectations...
“That will be all. You may go. Remember to tell her to come see me before evening.”
“Yes, Young Lady.”
Vya bowed and stepped backward. After reaching the door, she closed it quietly before turning and walking toward the maids’ dormitory.
Inside the study, Vivian remained seated in her chair, absentmindedly twirling a strand of red hair that hung over her shoulder.
The morning sunlight outside the window grew brighter and brighter, bathing her in a faint golden glow.
The corner of her lips lifted slightly.
Sweet—and dangerous.
“Eve...” she murmured the name softly, nodding once. It was impossible to tell whether she felt satisfaction or resentment.
“Let us see how long you can play with me.”
…
“If your bedroom performance does not last long, it usually means you are finished.”
The woman in a white coat spoke earnestly. She then stood up, brushed a hand through her green hair, and turned to retrieve a box of medicine from the cabinet.
“Here. Take one half an hour before you begin.”
Across the table, the man’s face had turned crimson, as if he were about to explode.
Why so red? Perhaps he was in love.
If possible, he wanted to test immediately whether an invisible wall existed outside the window.
People often said doctors treated every patient without judgment, but there were other people present right now.
He quickly grabbed the medicine, leaving behind several bills that exceeded the required payment.
“Thank you, doctor! I understand!”
Then he fled the clinic without looking back.
After the green-haired doctor watched him leave, a mocking smile finally appeared on her lips.
She turned her gaze toward the other person who had been present the entire time.
“Beautiful maid, it is your turn. Do you happen to have the same kind of trouble?”
“......”
