Chapter 469 - 478: The Smiling Corpse
The fishing rod, dragged down by a heavy weight, finally rose a little with the old man’s effort.
But in the bleak night, what emerged from the water wasn’t a big fish.
Instead, it was a patch of ghastly white, indistinct from a distance. A heavy stone suddenly dropped in the old man’s heart.
It was as if that eerie suspicion in his heart had just been half-confirmed.
His hands trembled, and part of him wanted to let go of the rod, but muscle memory had him subconsciously reeling it in, little by little.
With a grating, CREAKING sound, the heavy weight pulling on the rod finally revealed its true form.
It was a person—completely naked, with ghastly white skin and a face obscured by black hair.
The moment this person appeared, the live-stream chat instantly erupted in screams, and the old man’s hands began to tremble uncontrollably.
[WTF, WTF, what the hell is that?]
[So there really are ghosts! Oh my god!]
[I’m screaming my head off! Ghosts are real! What do we do?!]
[So the streamer was telling the truth! Someone call the police! That’s obviously a corpse!]
[Could a murderer have dumped the body here? Run, old man, run! I have a really bad feeling about this!]
The old man’s hands trembled uncontrollably. He had been so stubborn just moments ago, but now even his lips were quivering. He wanted to run, but his body felt completely frozen in place.
Just as he was turning, a bone-deep chill shot through him. He saw the corpse blink its eyes at him and curl its lips into a smile.
It was hard to imagine—a corpse tangled in fishing line, its body bloated and white from soaking in the water, the line cutting so deep that raw flesh was exposed.
And yet, at this very moment, the pale female corpse tilted its head and gave the old man a horrifying smile. The number of terrified viewers in the chat multiplied.
[Help me, help me. Is she smiling?]
[Help! I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have looked at you! I know I was wrong!]
[Bad luck be gone, bad luck be gone.]
[I clicked on this by accident! Bad luck be gone!!]
[Streamer, help! That thing looked at me!]
[I’m about to piss myself!]
[Oh my god, I have to check the streamer’s shop to see if there’s any talisman paper for sale! I need to grab one, quick!]
[I’m going to be having nightmares about this tonight!]
The old man’s hands trembled ceaselessly, his lips quivered, and his body was so stiff it felt numb.
People freeze up when they experience extreme fear. Yet, the old man’s hand holding the fishing rod unconsciously tightened its grip, bit by bit.
Muscle memory even urged him to pull it closer.
This time, however, the old man forced his hands to stop. After three long seconds, sensation seemed to finally return to him. His grip went slack, the fishing rod dropped straight into the lake, and he let out a bloodcurdling scream that tore through the night sky.
"Help! Somebody! No, it’s a ghost!"
The old man’s words were incoherent as he screamed in panic, but aside from the viewers on the live stream, no one was around to hear him.
[Oh my god, I’m scared to death! What are we supposed to do?]
[I’ve already called the police! Old man, tell us your exact location so they can find you!]
[Run! I’m starting to feel like what the streamer said about ghosts is real. What if it crawls out of the water and comes for you?]
This commenter had to be a jinx. The message had barely appeared on screen when the surface of the lake suddenly rippled again.
A round, black-haired object broke the surface of the lake. It was followed by four pale limbs, and then it began to drift toward the old man, little by little.
