Chapter 381: Not an Accident?
Seeing that a child was rescued, the emergency responders who were already in position immediately rushed over.
Just as they were about to take the child from Ling Feng’s hands, he shook his head, "Thank you, but it’s not necessary!"
"Why? The child might be injured, we must check him out!" the doctor said.
"I appreciate your concern, but he’s fine, I’ve already checked!" Ling Feng said.
"You, on what basis!"
The emergency doctor suddenly became angry.
Ling Feng knew he meant well and gave a wry smile, "Thank you, but the child is indeed alright, you don’t need to worry."
"Who are you anyway? You’re going to be legally responsible if you do this, do you know that? Hand the child over to me, otherwise, you’re breaking the law!" the doctor shouted.
Seeing no other option, Ling Feng, with reluctance, handed over the crying child, "Then you go and check, but you are not allowed to take him away, I’ll need to take him home later."
"Who are you exactly?"
Many people had the same question, and a traffic police officer asked at that moment.
"The accident involved my in-laws; their daughter is my fiancée, get it?" Ling Feng asked.
"I see, then please cooperate with us and make a statement. Who is the owner of the car?" the traffic officer asked.
"Hold on, can I settle the child first and then come back?" Ling Feng asked.
"That’s fine."
Seeing his crestfallen expression, the officer didn’t want to obstruct him and thus nodded.
Mo Jiaolan had already seen what happened from the car, and now she was anxiously waiting beside the ambulance. Seeing Ling Feng, she asked with red eyes, "Is Little Peng okay?"
"I’ve checked, he’s not hurt at all," Ling Feng replied.
"Thank goodness!" Mo Jiaolan breathed a sigh of relief.
Ling Feng looked at her, "I know this is hard on you, but try to control your emotions for now. I’ll take Yuhe and this child back home in a while, and I’ll deal with the rest."
"Alright."
Although she agreed, the tears on Mo Jiaolan’s face never stopped flowing.
Ling Feng felt a heavy burden in his heart, instinctively connecting this tragic accident with himself.
But after thinking it through, even if it were targeted at him, there was no reason for anyone to harm Chen Gang and his wife. Could this just be a common traffic accident?
With doubts in mind, he turned back to the scene and asked the traffic officer, "Excuse me, what exactly happened with the accident, and where is the driver of that tanker truck?"
"The truck was going too fast, causing it to overturn, and the car couldn’t swerve in time and was hit. As for that driver, he has already been taken back to the station for investigation," the officer replied.
Ling Feng nodded and surveyed the situation at the scene.
It was a T-intersection where the tanker truck likely came from the south. It failed to brake in time when passing through the intersection and flipped over.
It didn’t seem intentional, but Ling Feng still harbored suspicions; he always felt that something was off, especially since Chen Gang had previously experienced targeted assassination attempts against him.
While he was contemplating this, the traffic officer’s walkie-talkie suddenly made a sound.
Ling Feng was standing close by and heard it very clearly, "The truck driver jumped out of the vehicle halfway and was hit and killed by a passing car!"
"What!"
Upon hearing this, Ling Feng’s brows furrowed tightly!
There must be a demon behind the abnormal!
Although still uncertain of the specifics, Ling Feng felt a twinge of self-blame.
If this was indeed because of him, it would be highly regrettable!
After all, those were two precious human lives!
As he was lost in thought, the traffic policeman spoke up, "Sir, are you ready to cooperate with our investigation now?"
"Oh, sure." Ling Feng nodded.
...
...
It took two hours to deal with the accident, and fortunately, the Mo family also came to help, which kept Ling Feng from being completely overwhelmed.
The bodies of Chen Gang and his wife were sent to the funeral home and would not be cremated until the following morning.
After being busy for such a long time, Ling Feng felt his head was heavy, and he trudged back to his car with leaden steps.
Chen Yuhe was awake, her eyes swollen like peaches. Although she was not crying anymore, her gaze was vacant.
Meanwhile, the boy named Little Peng was bouncing around and playing in her arms, completely unaware of what had happened.
Seeing her like this, Ling Feng’s heart ached even more. He couldn’t help but take her hand and say with a choked voice, "Yuhe, you have to stay strong."
"Was this really an accident?"
Chen Yuhe looked at him.
"I’m not completely sure, we need to investigate further."
Ling Feng looked into her face, "Don’t worry, if someone orchestrated this, I won’t just find them, I will ensure they feel the utmost pain before they die!"
The car left the funeral home, with Li Shiyun driving them back to the city.
The night was not easy because they had to keep vigil, and Chen Yuhe, being emotionally and physically exhausted, nearly fainted several times. If it weren’t for Ling Feng’s medicinal pills, she certainly wouldn’t have been able to hold on.
By the time of the cremation the next day, Chen Yuhe was crying uncontrollably. Ling Feng felt helpless and his heart was in agony as if it were being cut with a knife.
It was only after the funeral had ended and night had fallen that Li Shiyun, with a hoarse voice, asked, "Ling Feng, where shall we go now?"
"Let’s go back to the village."
Ling Feng had thought it over; returning to the Chen family would only make Chen Yuhe’s grief worse from all the reminders, and Mo Jiaolan’s hotel was too small and had a child to consider.
So the only option was to go back to Shiliu Village, which would also make it easier for everyone to take care of her.
As the car drove under the veil of night, Chen Yuhe, unable to sustain her strength, had already fallen into a deep sleep.
Mo Jiaolan, holding Little Peng, was also dozing off, while Ling Feng sat in the passenger seat, weighed down by a heavy heart, in silence.
At this time, not knowing what to say, Li Shiyun kept her eyes ahead and concentrated on driving.
When they got back to the village and saw that Chen Yuhe was sleeping soundly, Ling Feng said, "You all go back to your rooms. I’ll stay with her in the car."
Seeing this, the women who had attended the funeral exchanged glances with each other.
It was then that Lin Xue spoke up, "It’s uncomfortable in the car, why don’t you carry Yuhe up to Nine Heavens?"
"That’s a good idea."
Ling Feng nodded, first took Chen Yuhe over to Nine Heavens, then returned to bring the women over as well.
Watching the sleeping siblings, everyone’s feelings were incredibly complex.
Lin Xue then gave Ling Feng a meaningful look and pulled him aside to say, "There’s something fishy about this incident, should we check out the driver’s background?"
"Absolutely, my mind is all over the place right now, could you help me look into it?"
"Sure, if this wasn’t an accident, we can’t let it go," Lin Xue nodded.
Ling Feng looked at her and sighed, "I feel like it definitely wasn’t an accident, but I can’t understand if it was targeted at me or not!"
"Don’t take everything upon yourself, it’s the villain who acted in the shadows that’s to blame, not you," Lin Xue said softly.
Despite saying this, Ling Feng still felt a great deal of guilt. He looked over at Chen Yuhe, "I need to spend these next few days comforting her, so I’ll leave the investigation to you."
"I know, I’ll let you know as soon as I find something!" Lin Xue nodded.
