Chapter 171: Everyone is after Mia Valakys (2)
John Kendrow wastes no time and launches himself at Brianne in a lightning-fast burst of speed.
His blade of light comes crashing down on her, but she somehow manages to block the strike.
More attacks follow in rapid succession.
Yet Brianne narrowly escapes each one, though only with tremendous effort.
And still, she doesn’t fight back.
She remains entirely on the defensive, doing nothing but parrying and dodging.
"Who was the person you gave that classified information to...? And more importantly... why? Why did you betray HESPARC?!"
"I neither have the time nor the desire to explain myself to a nosy little rookie! If you’d just minded your own business, I wouldn’t have had to resort to this!"
John bombards her with a relentless barrage of thrusts and slashes, never giving her a moment to recover.
Before long, Brianne’s defense begins to crumble.
His blade of light cuts into her right shoulder.
A split second later, a brutal kick to the stomach sends her flying into the wall of the underground bunker where they’re fighting.
A facility accessible only to high-ranking officers.
Given the late hour, John had never imagined anyone else would be there—let alone following him.
Brianne struggles back to her feet.
Just in time to avoid a deadly slash that would have taken her head clean off.
Because of the wound in her shoulder, she transfers her light blade from her right hand to her left and resumes the fight.
She isn’t left-handed, but as a Monster Slayer, she was trained to fight effectively with either hand.
Their blades clash again and again.
Yet she remains entirely on the defensive.
An attitude that is beginning to irritate John Kendrow more and more.
"Is that really the best you can do, girl? Come on, fight back! I have no intention of killing someone who won’t even try to strike back!"
"Y-You’re my superior officer, and attacking a superior is high treason! Unlike you, I’m not a traitor!"
"Ah, Brianne Leviantis... your honor and sense of justice are truly admirable. You could have gone far, just like your mother. What a shame that we’ll have to lose an agent like you."
Once again, John breaks through her guard.
A point-blank thrust pierces her left thigh.
Then a shallow cut opens across her abdomen.
And finally, a punch crashes into her already injured right shoulder.
Streams of blood pour from Brianne’s numerous wounds.
Once again, she forces herself back to her feet, exhausted and wracked with pain, using her light blade as a crutch.
This time, however, John hesitates.
Almost as if he pities her.
"Why did you follow me, Brianne Leviantis?"
"B-Because... because I suspected you were plotting something... Ever since I overheard a conversation between you and my mother where you kept pressing her for information about Mia Valakys... You had to be desperate to find out where she was hiding if you kept pushing so hard, even though it was obvious she couldn’t possibly know..."
A mouthful of blood interrupts Brianne’s weary words. She coughs, then continues in a faint, pained voice.
"Y-You... you’ve been my role model ever since you were my commanding officer. So strong... so brave... so devoted to your duty... I’ve worked so hard all these years because I wanted to become like the person I admired more than anyone else in HESPARC... only to discover that person is a traitor, stealing classified information and handing it over to God knows who..."
"If that’s true, then why didn’t you report me to the Director or my sister instead of coming here alone to get yourself killed?"
"B-Because if I had... you would’ve been removed from your position and condemned... and I didn’t want that... You were my role model... my example... and the last thing I wanted was to disgrace a distinguished agent like you... I... I only wanted to speak to you personally... that’s all... I wanted to understand what you were planning and convince you to stop... but it’s too late now..."
Tears stream down her face as she spits out every word, torn between anger and disappointment.
"A traitor? Me? Be quiet, you fool. I’m the only person in this entire facility with an ounce of common sense. Only an idiot would’ve transferred Mia Valakys somewhere else instead of eliminating her and solving the problem immediately. That girl is a walking disaster, dragging death and destruction wherever she goes. Or have you already forgotten what happened in New York? If Mia Valakys had been killed, none of that would’ve happened. And if caring about the survival of my species makes me a traitor in your eyes, then so be it."
"I-If HESPARC’s leadership made that decision regarding Mia, then they must have had their reasons... and it’s not our place to oppose them. If everyone started acting on their own judgment, total chaos would follow... and isn’t the entire purpose of us Monster Slayers to prevent the world from descending into chaos...?"
"The ones bringing chaos are those damned creatures that HESPARC’s leniency allows to roam freely through our streets! Vampires, demons, lycans... they all need to die! Every last one of them! And the moment I become Director, I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that happens!"
John levels his weapon at Brianne.
"That pathetic, blind sense of justice you’ve been indoctrinated with will be your downfall. Goodbye, Brianne Leviantis!"
The instant Brianne sees John charge at her with his sword raised, a tear rolls down her cheek.
It isn’t just fear of death.
Chris’s smiling face appears before her eyes.
In an instant, she relives every moment they spent together at Ordrienne High. From the breaks they spent sharing snacks in the school courtyard to the last time they saw each other during the battle against Levreeshka Dulcar.
But alongside the joy of those carefree years spent together comes the regret of everything she never found the courage to tell him.
C-Chris... I really wanted to see you one last time... I’m such an idiot for never telling you how I felt about you... but you’re no better... how could you not realize that I lov—
SLASH!
A single, lightning-fast strike.
A fountain of blood erupts from the base of Brianne’s neck — where, only an instant earlier, her head had been.
