My Magical Girl System

Chapter 260: Beneath the Azure Veil

The sun hung high and bright in the sky as the van pulled up to the coastal checkpoint. The air was salt-tinged and cool, carrying the distant cry of seabirds and the rhythmic crash of waves against the shore.

Andrey stepped out first, his gaze sweeping the area. The checkpoint was modest—a few prefabricated structures, a small dock extending into the water, and a shimmering portal hovering above the surface of the sea. Its edges were tinged with deep blue and silver, and it pulsed with a steady, rhythmic light that seemed to echo the movement of the tides.

A young Association officer approached, her clipboard in hand, her expression professional but tinged with curiosity. "Andrey Thompson? I’ve been informed of your arrival. The gate is stable, but we’ve been monitoring unusual energy readings. Be careful in there."

Andrey nodded, his gaze fixed on the portal. "We will."

The team gathered at the water’s edge, their reflections rippling across the surface. Sein cracked her neck, her flames flickering faintly around her fists. Sarah’s wand was already in hand, its pink glow casting soft light on her face. Lisa stood close to Andrey, her hands glowing with a faint, mint-green light as she prepared her barrier.

Andrey’s voice was calm, steady. "We’ll enter in standard formation. Sein and I will take point. Sarah, you’re mid. Lisa, you’re rear. Stay close and stay alert."

They stepped forward, the portal’s light washing over them as they crossed the threshold.

The world shifted.

They emerged onto a small, rocky island suspended in an endless expanse of open sky. Below them, the sea stretched out in all directions—its surface a deep, shimmering blue that seemed to reflect a light source that wasn’t there. The air was warm, carrying the scent of salt and something faintly floral.

Andrey’s gaze swept the horizon. The island was dotted with patches of pale grass and clusters of crystalline flowers. In the distance, they could see other islands—some close, some far, all connected by narrow bridges of woven light.

Sarah’s voice was soft, awed. "It’s beautiful..."

Sein’s gaze was sharper, scanning the distance. "Don’t let the scenery fool you. There’s something off about this place."

Lisa’s hands glowed as she extended her barrier around the team. "I can feel it too—the mana here is... unstable. It shifts like the tide."

Andrey’s Ki senses stretched outward, probing the edges of the island. "Stay in formation. We move carefully."

They advanced across the island, their footsteps soft on the pale grass. The bridges of light stretched ahead, connecting the islands in a delicate, intricate web. The air hummed with a faint, almost imperceptible energy.

Sein’s voice was low, focused. "Something’s moving in the water."

Andrey’s gaze snapped to the surface below. The water rippled, a dark shape gliding beneath the surface. It was large, serpentine, its form barely visible through the shimmering depths.

Sarah’s voice was tight. "That’s not a small creature."

Andrey’s hand tightened on his staff. "Keep moving. Don’t stop until we reach the next island."

They crossed the bridge of light, their footsteps barely making a sound on the shimmering surface. The water below churned, the dark shape following them, its movements patient, deliberate.

They reached the next island—larger than the first, its surface covered in clusters of glowing coral and crystalline formations. The air was thicker here, carrying a faint, electric charge.

From the shadows between the coral formations, shapes began to emerge. They were humanoid, their bodies composed of translucent, shimmering blue light, their features smooth and expressionless. They moved with fluid, synchronized grace.

Andrey’s staff was already in motion, deflecting the first strike. "Guardians! Stay close!"

Sein’s flames roared as she drove her fist into the nearest guardian, the impact sending it staggering. Sarah’s pink energy rained down from above, scattering their formation. Lisa’s barrier expanded, deflecting a volley of shimmering projectiles.

The guardians pressed forward, their movements coordinated, their attacks relentless. Andrey’s staff carved through them, but more kept emerging from the shadows between the coral.

The water below churned, and Andrey saw it: a massive, serpentine form rising from the depths—its scales glistening like polished obsidian, its eyes glowing with a cold, predatory light. A [Tide Serpent].

Andrey’s mind raced. ’We can’t fight both at once. We need to break their coordination.’

"Sein, Sarah, focus on the guardians! Lisa, reinforce the barrier—keep us mobile! I’ll draw the serpent’s attention!"

Sein’s voice was sharp. "You’re going to fight that thing alone?"

Andrey’s gaze was steady. "I only need to buy you time. Don’t waste it."

Sein’s grin was fierce, approving. "I’ve got your back."

Andrey turned to face the serpent, his staff extended, his Ki senses locked onto its movements. The creature rose higher, its massive form casting a shadow over the island. Its jaws opened wide, revealing rows of jagged teeth.

The Tide Serpent’s massive form coiled in the air, its obsidian scales gleaming with a slick, wet sheen. Its eyes locked onto Andrey with predatory focus, and it lunged, jaws opening wide.

Andrey dove to the side, the serpent’s teeth grazing his shoulder as he rolled across the rocky surface. He came up in a crouch, his staff extended, Ki flowing into the weapon.

"Sein! The guardians are regrouping!" Sarah’s voice was sharp with urgency.

Sein’s flames roared as she drove her fist through another guardian, but more were already emerging from the coral formations. "I see them! Just keep the serpent off us!"

The Tide Serpent’s tail swept toward Andrey, a blur of motion. He leaped, the tail passing beneath him, and drove his staff into its side. The impact was like striking solid stone, and the creature barely flinched.

Andrey’s internal thought surfaced: ’Its scales are too tough. I need to find a weak point.’

The serpent’s head snapped toward him, its jaws closing in. Andrey used Phantom Step, appearing behind it, and struck the base of its skull. The creature let out a low, guttural hiss, its body convulsing as it turned to face him.

Sarah’s voice cut through the chaos. "Andrey! The guardians are pushing us back! We need to finish this!"

Andrey’s gaze snapped to Sein, who was still holding the line against the guardians. She was fierce, her flames cutting through their ranks, but even she was starting to slow.

He made a decision. "Sein! Switch with me! I’ll hold the guardians—you take the serpent!"

Sein’s eyes widened for a fraction of a second, then she grinned. "My turn to shine, huh?"

She launched herself at the serpent, flames roaring around her fists. Andrey moved to intercept the guardians, his staff sweeping through their ranks, his movements precise and controlled.

The Tide Serpent lunged at Sein, its jaws snapping. She ducked, driving her fist into its underbelly, the impact sending a shockwave through its body. The creature recoiled, its form convulsing.

"Not so tough now, are you?" Sein’s voice was sharp, fierce.
