My Magical Girl System

Chapter 257: Test Evaluation I

The morning sun cast a warm glow over the city as the team stepped out of the van and made their way toward the Hero Association headquarters. The building loomed ahead, its glass facade gleaming, the familiar emblem of the Association displayed prominently above the entrance.

Andrey walked at the front, dressed in a crisp white button-up shirt and dark trousers, his jacket slung over one arm. His glasses were polished, his hair neatly combed. Behind him, Sarah trudged along, her steps heavy, her eyes half-lidded with exhaustion.

"I couldn’t sleep at all last night," Sarah muttered, rubbing her eyes. "Someone’s moaning kept me awake."

Lisa, walking beside her, flushed a deep shade of pink. "I’m sorry... I didn’t realize my voice was that loud..."

Andrey glanced back at her. "If it was bothering you that much, you could have just joined us instead of lying awake listening."

Sarah shot him a tired glare. "And end up even more exhausted? No thanks. I needed the sleep."

Lisa fidgeted with the hem of her blouse, her voice soft. "I got a little carried away... especially since Morgana was so enthusiastic..."

A voice cut through from behind them. "Finally. It’s about time we got promoted again."

Sein descended from the van, stretching her arms above her head. Her hair was tied back in a loose ponytail, and she moved with an easy, confident stride.

Andrey adjusted his glasses. "The Association might have a different test for us this time. Not all promotions follow the same pattern."

Sein shrugged. "Beats me. I was promoted straight to S-rank—I never went through the regular process."

Sarah’s eyebrows rose. "Wait, you skipped all the ranks and went straight to S?"

"I was already strong enough," Sein replied simply.

The team entered the lobby, the cool air of the Association headquarters washing over them. The receptionist, a familiar face with a warm smile, looked up as they approached. Her gaze swept over the group, and a flicker of recognition appeared in her eyes.

"Good morning! Andrey Thompson and team—here for your promotion review?"

Andrey nodded, stepping forward. "That’s right. We’re ready."

The receptionist’s fingers moved across her keyboard, her eyes scanning the screen. "I see your records. Impressive work—multiple B-rank gates, a double gate anomaly, and several quests." She paused, her gaze flicking to Andrey. "The Guild Council has authorized a special promotion review for your team. It won’t be a standard test."

Andrey’s expression remained calm. "What kind of test?"

The receptionist’s smile widened slightly. "You’ll be briefed when you reach the assessment floor. Good luck."

The elevator ride was quiet, the soft hum of the machinery the only sound. The doors opened onto a wide, open floor—a training arena, its walls lined with reinforced panels and faintly glowing mana sensors.

A figure stood at the center of the arena, her arms crossed, her posture relaxed but alert. She was tall, with short, silver-streaked hair and sharp eyes. She wore a sleek, form-fitting combat suit, and her presence carried the quiet authority of someone who had seen countless battles.

The woman’s gaze swept over the team, her expression calm and assessing. "Andrey Thompson and Magical girl squad. I’m Clestine Blanc. I’ll be conducting your assessment today."

She paused, allowing her words to settle. "This won’t be a standard test. You’ll face a series of combat simulations designed to push your limits in ways that conventional assessments can’t replicate. There will be no breaks between phases. You’ll be expected to adapt, coordinate, and overcome."

Her gaze lingered on Andrey. "You’re the leader. Your team’s performance will reflect your ability to make decisions under pressure. Do you understand?"

Andrey met her gaze evenly. "I understand."

Clestine nodded once, a hint of approval flickering in her eyes. "Good. Prepare yourselves—we begin in two minutes."

She turned and walked toward a console at the edge of the arena, her fingers already moving across the holographic interface.

Sarah let out a low breath. "Well, this is going to be intense."

Lisa’s voice was soft but steady. "We’ll do fine."

Sein cracked her neck, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Don’t burden me, okay?"

The arena’s lights dimmed, and a low hum filled the air. The mana sensors along the walls flared to life, casting shifting patterns of blue and white light across the floor. Clestine’s voice echoed from the console.

"First phase: Defense. You’ll be tasked with protecting a designated objective from waves of simulated enemies. The objective will be marked by a glowing beacon in the center of the arena. If the beacon is destroyed, the phase ends in failure. You have three minutes to prepare."

A holographic marker materialized at the center of the arena—a pulsing, golden pillar of light, about waist-high. It hummed with a steady, rhythmic energy, casting long shadows across the polished floor.

Sarah’s eyes widened. "We have to protect that thing? From what?"

As if in answer, a series of holographic figures began to materialize at the edges of the arena. They were humanoid in shape, their forms shimmering with a faint blue light, their movements fluid and coordinated. Each carried a simulated weapon—swords, spears, and a few with bows.

Sein’s lips curled into a grin. "Oh, this is going to be fun."

Andrey’s voice was calm, measured. "Lisa, reinforce the beacon. Sarah, cover the left flank. Sein, you’re on the right. I’ll take the front."

Lisa’s hands moved quickly, a shimmering barrier forming around the beacon. "Aegis of Dawn—reinforced!"

The first wave of holographic figures surged forward.

Sein met them head-on, her flames roaring to life as she drove her fist into the chest of the nearest figure. The simulated enemy shattered into fragments of light, but two more took its place. She moved through them like a wildfire, each strike precise and devastating.

Sarah’s pink energy rained down from above, her projectiles piercing through the holographic figures with pinpoint accuracy. "They’re fast, but they’re not that tough!"

Andrey held the center, his staff a blur of motion as he deflected a volley of arrows, then swept the legs out from under a charging swordsman. He pivoted, driving the butt of his staff into another figure’s chest, watching it dissolve into light.

The figures kept coming—relentless, coordinated, adapting to their tactics.

Clestine’s voice echoed from the console. "Second wave incoming. Adjust your formation."

From the edges of the arena, a new wave of holographic figures emerged. These were larger, their armor thicker, their weapons heavier. They moved with deliberate, synchronized purpose.

Sein’s flames flickered as she struck one of the new figures, the impact sending it stumbling back but not shattering. "They’re tougher!"

Lisa’s hands glowed as she strengthened the barrier around the beacon. "I’ll hold the barrier as long as I can!"

Sarah’s voice was tight with focus. "Andrey, they’re targeting the beacon!"

Andrey’s gaze snapped to the new figures. They were pushing past Sein, their movements coordinated, their focus fixed on the golden pillar. He moved to intercept, his staff a barrier between them and their objective.

Andrey’s staff caught a heavy blow from one of the larger figures, the impact jarring his arms, but he held. He twisted, driving the butt of his staff into the figure’s knee, watching it stumble.

"Sein, thin their numbers! Sarah, focus fire on the ones breaking through!"

The battle raged on, the team moving in sync, their coordination steady and precise. The beacon pulsed at the center of the arena, its light unwavering.

Clestine observed from the console, her sharp eyes tracking their movements. A faint, almost imperceptible nod of approval flickered across her face as she watched them adapt to the escalating waves.

"Not bad," she murmured, her voice low. "Let’s see how you handle the next phase."
