Chapter 256: Crafting Menu
Andrey leaned back in the armchair, his fingers tracing the rim of his teacup. The apartment had grown quiet. Sarah and Sein had retreated to their rooms, Lisa had curled up on the couch with a book, and Morgana was dozing lightly nearby, her breathing slow and even.
He set the cup down and opened the system shop, the familiar holographic interface flickering to life in front of him. His Affection Points and Mana Points had accumulated significantly over the past few weeks. It was time to invest.
He scrolled through the inventory slowly, his gaze scanning each item with careful precision. He selected a few concussive grenades for area denial, smoke bombs for cover, and a pair of mana disruptors to counter spellcasters. He added a sonic disruptor for disorienting agile opponents and a mana pulse radar to detect hidden enemies and illusions. Finally, he selected a formal combat suit—sleek, tailored, and reinforced against elemental attacks. The total cost was steep, but necessary.
A faint shimmer of light materialized beside him. Morgana stirred, her red eyes opening slowly as she watched the holographic interface with quiet curiosity.
"You’re buying equipment from the system... that’s how you defeated that assassin earlier, isn’t it?"
Andrey nodded, his gaze still fixed on the interface. "The Echo Shroud was a one-use item I acquired a while back. It’s what allowed us to escape Guile."
He dismissed the shop interface briefly and opened the inventory instead. He had collected a variety of materials over the past weeks—monster cores, scales, and even some shimmering silver thread and stardust powder. They sat in his inventory, neatly categorized, but he had never actually used them for anything.
"System. What exactly are these materials for? I’ve been collecting them, but I don’t fully understand their value."
The system’s holographic screen flickered, its voice bright and informative.
System: Great question, Host! The materials you’ve collected are used for crafting. You can combine them with Mana Points to create useful equipment—armor, weapons, accessories, and consumables. Each item has a different cost depending on its rarity and complexity. Some materials can be combined to create powerful gear, while others are used for one-use items like potions or enchantments.
Andrey’s brow furrowed slightly. "So the materials themselves aren’t enough. I have to spend points to turn them into something useful?"
System: Exactly! Think of it like this: the materials are the ingredients, and the Mana Points are the fuel that transforms them into finished products. The rarer the material, the more points it costs to craft. But the results can be well worth the investment.
Andrey scrolled through the crafting options, his gaze lingering on the potential creations. "What kind of equipment can I make with what I have?"
System: Let me show you~
A list of possible creations appeared in front of him. Armor reinforcement alloys. Weapon enhancement cores. Elemental resistance cloaks. A few potion recipes. The list was extensive, and Andrey studied it with quiet focus.
He let out a slow breath. "I’ve been stockpiling these materials for a while. I just never had the time to invest in crafting."
Morgana leaned closer, her voice thoughtful. "Then perhaps it’s time to start. A well-prepared master is a living master."
Andrey allowed himself a small, tired smile. "You’re not wrong."
Andrey leaned forward, his gaze fixed on the crafting interface as he scrolled through the available combinations. His fingers hovered over the options, weighing each one carefully.
The Shimmering Silver Thread and Stardust Powder could be combined to create a Cloak of Starlight, offering moderate resistance to dark damage and a passive effect that dulls physical pain, allowing the wearer to endure hits that would otherwise slow them down. The Corrosive Toad Core and Shadow Weaver Venom Sac could be refined into a Poisonbane Charm, granting significant resistance to venom-based attacks. And the Golden Nectar could be infused into a Vitality Elixir, permanently increasing the drinker’s health pool.
He selected the Poisonbane Charm first. The system confirmed the craft, and a soft glow enveloped the materials as they merged and reshaped into a small, elegant pendant—its surface etched with intricate patterns of intertwined vines and serpentine coils. The metal was warm to the touch, and Andrey could feel the faint pulse of protective energy radiating from it.
He added a Vitality Elixir to his inventory, the golden liquid swirling in a small glass vial.
Lisa, who had been watching from the couch, let out a soft, awed breath. "That’s amazing... The materials you’ve been collecting are actually turning into real equipment now. It’s like watching alchemy in action." She paused, tilting her head. "Speaking of which... what about the egg? The one we found in the gate a while back?"
Andrey reached into his inventory and carefully withdrew the large, midnight-blue egg. Its golden speckles shimmered faintly in the dim light, and the surface was still warm to the touch.
"I’ve been wondering about this egg for a while now," he said, turning it over in his hands. "It’s been dormant since we found it. I’m not sure what it needs to hatch."
Lisa moved closer, her hands hovering over the egg’s surface. She closed her eyes, letting her mana flow gently into the shell. After a long moment, she let out a soft, uncertain breath.
"It feels... alive. But it’s dormant—like it’s waiting for something. I can sense a faint warmth, but it’s not responding to my mana the way I expected."
Morgana, who had been resting nearby, opened her eyes and studied the egg with quiet curiosity. She pushed herself upright, her voice carrying a thoughtful edge.
"I’ve encountered creatures like this before—beings that require specific conditions to awaken. Sometimes it’s a particular environment, sometimes it’s a certain type of mana, and other times... it’s emotional resonance."
She paused, her red eyes meeting Andrey’s. "The egg might be waiting for a strong emotional connection—trust, affection, or even shared danger. It could be that the egg is attuned to the bond between you and your team."
Andrey’s brow furrowed as he considered her words. "A creature that hatches based on emotional resonance?"
Morgana’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. "There are many things in this world that defy easy explanation, Master. The egg may be one of them."
Lisa’s eyes widened slightly. "So the egg might hatch if we... bond with it? Like, spend time with it, keep it warm, protect it?"
"Something like that," Morgana replied.
Andrey studied the egg for a long moment, his thumb tracing the smooth surface of its shell. "Then I’ll keep it close."
He gently placed the egg back into his inventory, his mind already turning over the possibilities. "I’ll pay more attention to it. See if it responds to anything."
Morgana nodded approvingly. "A wise decision, Master."
