My Magical Girl System

Chapter 242: Trapped Prey

The kobolds scattered as Lumy’s Aqua Dominion tore through their front lines, but more were already surging from the shadows—archers taking position on the low branches, spearmen flanking from both sides. Their chittering grew frantic, more coordinated.

Andrey focused, and the white-and-gold pistol materialized directly from his inventory into his hand. He channeled a thin thread of Ki into the barrel, the weapon humming faintly as he raised it, sighting down the slide.

"Covering fire," he said calmly.

He fired.

The first shot struck a kobold archer in the shoulder, spinning it off its perch. The second found a spearman’s knee, dropping it mid-lunge. Each round carried a faint blue-white tracer—Ki-infused, precise, and devastating against the lightly armored creatures.

Lumy didn’t waste the opening. She raised her staff again, water coalescing around her in shimmering arcs. "Tidal Restraint!"

Streams of pressurized water shot forward, wrapping around three kobolds at once and slamming them into the trunk of a massive oak. The impact cracked the bark, and the creatures went still.

Andrey fired twice more, dropping two more archers as they tried to reposition. "They’re regrouping on the left flank. I’ll push forward—cover me."

Lumy’s staff glowed brighter. "I’ve got your back."

Andrey moved.

He sprinted toward the main cluster of kobolds, his staff extending in his grip. As he closed the distance, he channeled Ki into the weapon, feeling it hum with power. With a sharp, sweeping motion, he swung the staff in a wide arc.

The weapon extended mid-swing, growing to nearly twice its original length. The massive sweep caught five kobolds across the chest, sending them flying into the underbrush. Two more were crushed against a boulder, their weapons clattering uselessly to the ground.

Andrey planted the staff and pivoted, sweeping the legs out from under a charging spearman. Before it could rise, he drove the butt of the staff into its skull.

The remaining kobolds hesitated, their earlier coordination faltering. But one of them let out a sharp, commanding hiss, and the survivors regrouped, circling around the edges of the clearing.

Andrey’s eyes narrowed. "They’re trying to surround us."

Lumy moved to his side, her staff raised, water swirling around her in a protective veil. "I’ll handle the ones on the left."

Andrey nodded. "I’ll take the right."

A group of kobolds charged from the right flank, their weapons raised, their chittering fierce. Andrey didn’t give them time to close the distance. He activated Phantom Step, vanishing from his position and reappearing in the middle of their formation.

His daggers materialized in his hands, the Shadow Fangs appearing from his inventory in a flash of silver and shadow. He moved through the kobolds like a wraith, each strike precise and devastating. Two fell before they could even raise their weapons. A third lunged; he sidestepped, drove his dagger into its side, and spun to meet the next.

Lumy’s water chains lashed out from the left, binding three kobolds and dragging them into the mud. A fourth tried to flank her; she brought her staff down on its head, the impact sending it sprawling.

The clearing fell silent.

The surviving kobolds who hadn’t been struck down or bound scattered into the forest, their chittering fading into the distance.

Andrey straightened, his daggers still in hand, his breathing steady. He glanced at Lumy, who was already dismissing her water chains, her staff lowering.

"Clear," he said.

Lumy nodded, her expression focused but calm. "They won’t regroup quickly after that."

Andrey sheathed his daggers and retrieved his staff, extending it back to its standard length. "Good. Let’s keep moving before they change their minds."

He turned to Lumy, his gaze steady. "Your control over water is impressive. You used it precisely, and you kept your distance while still dealing with the ones closing in."

Lumy met his gaze, her voice flat but carrying a hint of acknowledgment. "I’m still learning. But I know how to adapt."

Andrey allowed a small nod. "That’s more than most can say."

Lumy’s lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile—barely perceptible, but there. "Let’s keep moving."

They pressed forward, the forest beginning to thin as the ground grew softer, damper. The mist that had clung to them for so long began to recede, replaced by a faint, silvery glow that seemed to emanate from the ground itself.

Andrey’s Ki senses stretched outward, and he felt it—a concentration of pure, ambient mana, pulsing like a slow heartbeat.

"We’re close," he said quietly.

Lumy’s step quickened, her eyes scanning the path ahead with renewed intensity. "I feel it too."

They emerged into a small clearing—a pocket of the forest untouched by the chaos of the gate. At its center, a cluster of pale, silver flowers grew in a ring around a small, crystal-clear pool. The petals glowed faintly, casting a soft, cool light that seemed to push back the shadows.

Lumy’s breath caught. Her voice came out soft, almost reverent. "Moonpetal Blooms..."

She stepped forward, her hand reaching out to touch the nearest flower.

Andrey let her have the moment. He stood at the edge of the clearing, his staff planted in the earth, his gaze sweeping the treeline for any sign of movement.

The flowers were beautiful—small and delicate, their silver petals shimmering like captured moonlight. Lumy’s fingers brushed against one of them, and she let out a slow, steadying breath.

"This is it," she said, her voice carrying a weight of relief she rarely allowed herself to show. "This is what we came for."

Andrey’s Ki senses flared—a sudden, violent shift beneath the earth. His eyes snapped to the ground just as the surface beneath the Moonpetal Blooms began to crack and buckle.

"Lumy! Get back!" he shouted, already moving.

But the warning came too late.

The earth erupted.

A massive, circular maw surged from beneath the pool, its edges lined with jagged, crystalline teeth that gleamed like shards of frozen lightning. The petals Lumy had been reaching for vanished into its depths, and the glowing pool was swallowed whole.

Lumy’s eyes widened. She tried to leap back, but the ground beneath her feet gave way. A root-like tendril coiled around her ankle, yanking her off balance.

"Lumy!" Andrey lunged forward, his hand outstretched.

Her fingers brushed his—just for a moment—before the creature’s maw closed around her, pulling her down into the earth with a sickening, grinding crunch.

Andrey’s hand closed on empty air.

The ground sealed behind her, the surface settling into an unbroken layer of moss and earth as if nothing had happened.
