Chapter 132 132: Hard Control
With no work to do, Kael swiveled his chair over to Hill's side. Judging by his expert control of the seat, it was clear he had spent plenty of time slacking off in the past.
"Miss Hill, may I ask about your current benefits and compensation package?"
Kael whispered, starting to stealthily poach from the competition.
Anyway, the high wall of S.H.I.E.L.D. was bound to collapse sooner or later, so he might as well reserve the good bricks inside in advance.
Agents also had to eat, live, and pay off mortgages.
In essence, it was just another job, only with some high-end labels attached.
Especially since the profession of an agent was quite sensitive, involving contact with too much classified intelligence; if one couldn't find a good new employer to cover them in time, things might not end well.
Kael considered this as looking out for Hill's future.
"I'm sorry, that is classified information. It's not convenient for me to answer."
Although Hill refused to answer, her attitude was very gentle, with a faint smile on her lips.
"Alright, then let's talk about something else. Miss Hill, are you still single?"
Kael continued his inquiry.
Several male agents nearby pricked up their ears, seemingly curious about the answer as well. However, just as they were about to look up, they were suppressed by Kael's glare.
Is this something you guys should be listening to?
"Currently, yes."
Hill wasn't lying.
This actually revealed a bit of an attitude indirectly.
Even knowing Kael's playboy nature, his personal charm and wealth made it truly difficult to dislike him.
"Then, Miss Hill, would you be interested in having a sweet romance with me?"
As Kael spoke, his restless fingers skipped onto Hill's shoulder.
People in Western countries have always been relatively direct about their feelings; Kael's words were already considered quite tactful.
"I'm sorry, I want to focus more on my career right now. Besides, Mr. Wayne, aren't you already in a relationship with Ms. Helen Cho?"
Hill said as she took a step forward, brushing off Kael's hand while maintaining her previous attitude.
"Well, if you ever have any emotional needs, Miss Hill, you must consider me first. I have a lot of experience in time management; I'm sure I can satisfy you."
While looking regretful, Kael handed over a gold-plated business card with his private number on it.
Hill hesitated for a moment before reaching out to accept it.
Setting everything else aside, the friendship of a major capitalist was truly impossible to refuse.
Who knew when she might need Kael's help?
On the soil of America, the influence of capital never had boundaries and had long since permeated every aspect of life.
"Kael! Now is not the time for you to pick up girls. Get over here!"
Tony's annoyed voice came through.
Kael could only shrug helplessly at Hill, gave a slight push with his feet, and zipped over to Tony's side.
"Wait, I've already found the person for you. Why am I still involved?"
"This is a war concerning the future of humanity. Can't you be a bit more serious?"
Tony looked like he was disappointed in him.
"..."
Kael was momentarily speechless. Hearing those words from Tony's mouth felt a bit out of place; maybe Steve should be the one saying them.
Several people sat in the conference room discussing the situation.
Thor brought intelligence that the others didn't know.
"Loki has a Chitauri army. They are not Asgardians, but come from an unknown world..."
As soon as these words were spoken, the expressions of everyone present turned grave.
They hadn't expected the situation to be so serious.
Kael also straightened his posture. If he didn't behave, Tony might actually kick him.
After all, besides Kael, no one present knew that the trouble had already been resolved.
Without the tesseract to open a portal, the Chitauri army wouldn't be able to reach Earth. One must know that at this point in time, the Ancient One and King Odin hadn't gone offline yet.
This was why Thanos, despite knowing the locations of several Infinity Stones, still didn't dare to make a move; he simply couldn't win.
When Odin and the Ancient One were making names for themselves in the universe, Thanos was still just a purple potato l*li.
Several people communicated and exchanged ideas, trying to get more valuable information from Thor, but unfortunately, he didn't know much either.
The topic soon fell on Loki's Scepter. Natasha was very concerned about Hawkeye being controlled.
But after discussing for a long time, they couldn't solve the problem.
In the end, only Tony provided some valuable intelligence. He had stayed up all night reviewing Selvig's notes and found several key elements for starting the portal.
One was iridium, used for stabilization.
The other was a sufficient power source.
Tony stood at the center of everyone's attention, talking eloquently and giving off an impressive, though somewhat incomprehensible, vibe.
However, besides Kael, only Dr. Banner could keep up with Tony's train of thought; the others were completely lost.
Finally, Nick made the call to focus the next step on the Scepter. In his view, no matter what Loki was planning, he was currently locked in a specially designed cage.
Nick was a smart man, so he was very confident in the prison he had designed.
"Let's get to work."
Tony said to Dr. Banner, then reached out and grabbed Kael's chair, dragging him out of the conference room as well.
For now, Dr. Banner and the others' understanding of the Scepter was still inaccurate. They didn't realize that the two were entities of the same caliber, thinking it was just a derivative of the tesseract.
After all, the gamma readings of both were almost identical.
Listening to Dr. Banner's test results, Tony extended a job offer; it was clear he truly appreciated the man.
As expected of a major capitalist, he liked to poach employees just like Kael.
Unfortunately, the shadow in Dr. Banner's heart had not yet dissipated. He was unwilling to enter the city and didn't dare return to a normal life or have contact with too many people, so he politely declined.
"Don't worry, I promise I won't pressure you. Kael can testify for me on this."
As a former employee of the Stark Group, Kael indeed had a lot of say in this matter.
"Huh? Isn't Pepper in charge of managing the building now? Since when can you make the calls?"
Kael threw out a question mark and received a warning finger from Tony.
Why are you blurting out the truth?
Tony turned around and poked Banner with a pen, testing his emotional control.
Since they might have to fight side-by-side later, he needed to know Dr. Banner's current situation.
Tony had seen Dr. Banner's intelligence data; his current Mark armor wouldn't be able to handle that big green guy very well.
However, Tony wasn't worried. If all else failed, he could still release Kael's vajra titan.
But this method of testing was a bit too flippant, especially in Steve's eyes, who couldn't help but step forward to lecture him.
"Endangering the lives of everyone on this carrier is not something to be joked about."
Steve looked very serious; he truly treated Tony as his junior.
This was actually one of the reasons Tony didn't get along with him.
Dr. Banner was quite calm about it. Compared to Tony's casualness, it was the wary and fearful looks of others that stung more.
"Shouldn't you focus on solving your own problems?"
Steve spoke again.
"You think I'm not? Why did Fury only come to us now instead of before? What is he hiding from us?"
Tony fired back bluntly. Although his attitude toward Steve was poor, he actually trusted his father's old comrade.
"You're saying he's hiding something from us?"
Steve frowned.
"He's the king of spies, Captain. Your decryption work should be finished by now, right, Kael?"
Tony said, turning his head to look at Kael, who was browsing short videos, and couldn't help but kick his stool.
He used to hide while slacking off, but now he's doing it so openly?
"Kael?"
Steve inquired.
"A Bao."
Kael called out, and a yellow bullet head popped up on the nearby computer screen.
"Decryption complete. Master, what do you need to know?"
Asking Nick for access permissions earlier was, to put it bluntly, just a show for him. Even without permission, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s firewall was like an open door to four seasons treasure.
Except for some physically isolated intelligence data, all other information recorded and stored by the Helicarrier had been packaged and copied by four seasons treasure.
The only slight difficulty was the encryption methods of these files, but with enough computing power, cracking them was only a matter of time.
"Now, Captain, you can ask your questions."
Kael looked at Steve, who, after a brief hesitation, stepped up to the computer screen.
He seemed a bit rigid in his ways, like a traditional soldier, but if he were truly a pedantic person, he wouldn't have become Captain America.
"A... A Bao, I want to know what Fury has been hiding..."
"Certainly, Captain..."
"..."
four seasons treasure presented the evidence and data bit by bit.
The results chilled Steve; he seemed to see the shadows of past enemies in them.
Infinite clean energy was just a front. Nick's purpose for restarting the tesseract research, just like Hydra in the past, was to create energy weapons.
"I'm going to verify all of this!"
Steve believed that seeing was believing. He left the lab and headed for the weapon storage point marked by four seasons treasure.
"Be my guest."
Tony motioned with his hand, watching Steve leave.
But soon, more people crowded into the lab.
The Scepter radiated power outward, gradually inducing the negative emotions in the hearts of those present.
Originally, this was just a trap Loki set for Banner. Although it didn't achieve its initial purpose, it created chaos. Just as a conflict was about to erupt...
A blush-inducing female scream rang out from Kael's phone, instantly drowning out the original arguing.
"Oh yes yes~ yes!!"
"..."
Everyone's eyes immediately focused on Kael.
"Sorry, excuse me."
Kael looked calm and composed as he put down his phone and lightly tapped the table.
"Everyone, you were just being controlled by the Scepter. Do you need me to help you cool down again?"
What Scepter? It was just like that. Kael had used a slight trick to hard-control Tony and the others for three seconds.
"..."
An unguided Scepter couldn't exert its true power; it was just passive emotional guidance, which wasn't actually hard to break free from.
Of course, it might also be because there were too many people present, and the Scepter's power was dispersed.
If it had really focused on Dr. Banner, he might have already turned into the Hulk by now.
But in any case, this kind of power couldn't affect Kael. His mental strength was already far beyond the mundane, not to mention he had recently studied at Kamar-Taj.
"Are you sure you didn't just forget to mute it?"
Tony looked suspicious. He didn't doubt for a second that Kael would do such a thing.
That said, the originally tense atmosphere suddenly dissipated.
Everyone realized there was a problem; their emotions shouldn't have spiraled out of control so easily.
"Lock down the Scepter!"
Nick immediately gave the order. This thing was too dangerous; now was not the time to study it.
Natasha did as she was told, stepping forward to put the Scepter away and seal it tightly.
"Gentlemen, regardless of anything else, the most urgent matter right now is to find the tesseract, deal with the trouble Loki has brought, and prevent an alien war!"
Nick made his final statement and then left without looking back.
Wasn't he the one with the guiltiest conscience present? If he didn't slip away now, when would he?
The remaining few looked at each other and finally chose to let the matter drop for now and settle the score with Nick later; after all, some things were more urgent than others.
"Well, if there's nothing else, I'll go get some rest."
Kael stretched. Having successfully avoided the first potential internal war, he truly was a man of great merit.
"By the way, do you guys have turn-down service?"
Kael paused as he passed Natasha and asked.
Don't misunderstand; turn-down service wasn't about sleeping together. It was just a service to help with sleep, usually involving tidying the bed, adjusting the atmosphere, or providing small gifts.
Of course, occasionally one could over-service a bit, but that depended on your personal methods.
"Sorry, this isn't a five-star hotel."
Natasha forced a smile.
"Poor review."
Kael muttered and walked out of the lab.
Nick had prepared a room for everyone.
Although the area wasn't large, the conditions were decent enough to be considered comfortable.
As for Tony and Dr. Banner, they continued the work of searching for the tesseract.
However, the results were not optimistic. The gamma rays released by the tesseract seemed to be interfered with by an external force, and the final locked range had a much larger deviation than expected.
To solve this problem, they would have to spend more time recalibrating the calculation formulas.
But one thing was certain: the tesseract was moving at high speed... Loki paced back and forth in his cage, the anxiety and irritability in his heart faintly showing in his body language.
According to the original plan, Hawkeye should have started acting by now. Yet, why was the Helicarrier still so stable and quiet? What exactly had happened that he didn't know about?
