Chapter 668 : The Childhood Friend with Heavenly Luck
"Ye Ye, can Mom ask you something?" Ling Ning said suddenly as they walked home.
Hearing her Mom’s question, Ling Ye tilted her head in curiosity. "Sure, ask away."
"I was wondering—are you planning to wrap up your novel soon?"
"Huh?! Mom, why do you think that?"
"Well, from what I’ve been reading, the recent chapters feel so tightly packed. And there’s something... off about it. Then again, it could just be me overthinking things~"
At her Mom’s words, Ling Ye raised an eyebrow as though something had clicked. With a calm expression, she replied, "That’s just Mom’s imagination. I’ve recently thought of a great idea for the plot, so it might feel a little different. But that’s normal."
Ling Ning nodded lightly. "I see. Well, make sure you don’t get carried away. Keep that great idea of yours under control, alright?"
"Don’t worry, I’ve got it under control. Just look forward to it, Mom," Ling Ye said, her lips curling into a mysterious smile. Soon, very soon, when her setup unfolded, her Mom would finally notice her.
Unaware of her daughter’s odd demeanor, Ling Ning remained oblivious.
Once they arrived home, Ling Ye tossed her school bag into her room, grabbed her laptop, and buried herself in the warmth of the kotatsu. Nothing could stop her from writing now.
Watching her daughter’s enthusiasm, Ling Ning chuckled softly. "Ye Ye, have you finished your schoolwork?"
"That stuff? I already took care of it at school."
For Ling Ye, the homework teachers assigned was hardly a challenge. She was confident she could ace the college entrance exams and get into the same university as her Mom.
Honestly, even if she didn’t turn in her assignments, the teachers wouldn’t care. She could openly play on her phone or sleep during class, and no one would say a word. Perhaps this was the privilege of being a "model student."
Just as Ling Ye began typing, the doorbell rang, making her frown. She glanced at her Mom, who was busy in the kitchen, sighed, and reluctantly got up to answer the door.
It wasn’t Xia You at the door, but someone she disliked greatly—Bai Yiyue, who was always clinging to her Mom.
Seeing Ling Ye’s scowl, Bai Yiyue laughed awkwardly. "Oh, it’s Ye Ye! Good evening~"
"Not good."
Though she didn’t want to let Bai Yiyue in, Ling Ye opened the door. After all, even if she refused, her Mom would let her in.
Once inside, Bai Yiyue slipped off her shoes and quietly tiptoed to the kitchen. Noticing that Ling Ning hadn’t noticed her, she smirked and prepared to surprise her from behind.
However, a small figure stepped in her way.
Ling Ye stood in front of her Mom protectively, casting a disdainful glance at Bai Yiyue. If she wanted to hug her Mom, she’d have to get through her first.
The two stared each other down until Ling Ning turned around, surprised to see Bai Yiyue. She quickly recovered and asked, "What are you two doing?"
"N-Nothing. I just hadn’t seen you in a while and thought I’d give you a heartfelt hug~"
"Please don’t do that while I’m cooking. Knives are dangerous. If I accidentally swing one at you, I’d have no choice but to destroy the evidence." Ling Ning grinned as she glanced at the knife in her hand, mimicking a yandere expression she’d seen Xia You make.
Seeing Ling Ning’s innocent smile, Bai Yiyue gulped. "Got it, got it! Put the knife down. We can talk things out!"
"Good."
Ling Ning set the knife aside and asked, "So, why are you here today?"
"Remember last time..." Bai Yiyue trailed off, glancing at Ling Ye’s wary expression before smiling. "I’ll explain later."
Ling Ning had a good idea of what Bai Yiyue was referring to—it was probably the photo of them kissing that had been taken before the break.
"Alright. Go sit in the living room. Next time, let me know in advance if you’re coming over. I might not have enough food. Actually, why don’t you go grab some takeout?"
"How could you say that, Ling Ning?!" Bai Yiyue pouted like a puppy that had been abandoned, leaving Ling Ning amused but helpless.
Still, Bai Yiyue knew Ling Ning wouldn’t actually make her leave. So, after her little act, she cheerfully went to sit in the living room. It had been a while since she’d been to Ling Ning’s house, and it felt surprisingly cozy.
Not long after she sat down, the sound of a key turning the lock caught her attention. Ling Ye was still typing away, and Ling Ning was in the kitchen. Who else had a key to the house?
Her question was soon answered as Xia You walked in. Spotting Bai Yiyue, she paused, clearly surprised.
Likewise, Bai Yiyue was taken aback. She hadn’t expected Xia You to have a key to Ling Ning’s house. Even she didn’t have one! How had things turned out like this? After all, she was here first!
Xia You greeted Bai Yiyue with a polite nod and a "Hello" before heading to the kitchen. On her way, she casually tossed the key in her hand before slipping it into her pocket.
Bai Yiyue puffed up with indignation. That little gesture was definitely a challenge! No, no, she couldn’t lose. She was Ling Ning’s childhood friend! How could she let a newcomer overshadow her?
Even though childhood friends always seemed to lose to sudden romantic rivals, she wasn’t just a childhood friend—she was a childhood friend with heavenly luck!
