“Ling Ning, do you remember what day it is today?”
Hearing this question, Ling Ning rolled her eyes. Ever since they’d left the house, Bai Yiyue had been asking her that repeatedly. Honestly, despite all her efforts to recall, Ling Ning couldn’t remember anything from that part of her childhood. Whatever Bai Yiyue was hinting at was a complete mystery to her.
“How many times are you going to ask that? I told you—I have no idea.”
“Come on~ Try to think a bit harder!”
A hint of disappointment flashed in Bai Yiyue’s eyes, confirming her suspicion that Ling Ning still hadn’t remembered.
Seeing the faint sadness in her friend’s face, Ling Ning sighed, gently reaching over to hold Bai Yiyue’s hand. “Alright, stop overthinking it. I’ve already started remembering some things recently. Give it time, and I’m sure my memory will come back.”
Feeling the warmth of Ling Ning’s hand, Bai Yiyue’s expression softened, and she nodded with a faint smile.
The two continued chatting as they walked, soon arriving at the Wen Wen Wedding Photography Studio. They were greeted by the same clerk as last time, who quickly led them to a reception room to wait for their photo album.
After a short while, the clerk returned, carrying two beautiful bags.
“Thank you for waiting. Here are your photos.”
Bai Yiyue immediately opened the album, flipping through it with excitement. Ling Ning, feeling a bit embarrassed, flashed an apologetic smile at the clerk. “Thank you so much. By the way, is your boss here today? I’d like to thank her in person.”
“Oh, I’m afraid the boss is out gathering materials today. She’s not at the studio. But I’ll make sure she gets your message.”
The words “gathering materials” caught Ling Ning’s attention for a moment, but she quickly realized what the clerk meant.
“Then please convey my thanks.”
Turning to Bai Yiyue, who was still happily immersed in the album, Ling Ning sighed and said, “Alright, let’s head home so you can look through it in peace. We shouldn’t linger here and bother the staff.”
Reluctantly, Bai Yiyue closed the album and tucked it into the bag, following Ling Ning out of the studio.
“Um… Ling Ning, could you accompany me somewhere next?”
Ling Ning looked at her friend’s hopeful face and smiled. “Lead the way. I’m here to hang out with you today, so it’s your call.”
“Yay!”
Cheering, Bai Yiyue leaned in and gave Ling Ning a quick peck on the cheek before she could react. Although there weren’t too many people around, a few passersby witnessed the affectionate gesture.
Startled, Ling Ning grabbed Bai Yiyue’s hand and hurriedly led her into a quiet alley. If someone recognized Bai Yiyue, it could cause a commotion.
“Could you be a bit more cautious about where you do things like that? You’re a public figure now. If rumors about you come out, you’re going to regret it~” Ling Ning said, exasperated.
“Aw, is Ling Ning worried about me? That makes me so happy!” Bai Yiyue beamed. She wanted to pull her in for a kiss but was stopped by Ling Ning.
“Alright, enough playing around. Didn’t you want to go somewhere? If we don’t hurry, it’ll be lunchtime soon.”
“Fine, fine, I get it,” Bai Yiyue pouted. “So stingy! You wouldn’t even let me kiss you—back then, you’d always ask me for kisses!”
Seeing the look on Ling Ning’s face, Bai Yiyue wisely dropped the subject. She led Ling Ning to the roadside, where they hailed a taxi and gave the driver a location.
Ling Ning’s eyebrows furrowed. The address sounded familiar—it was near the orphanage in the old town. So, that was where Bai Yiyue wanted to go.
Considering the traffic, the subway would have been a faster option. But given Bai Yiyue’s celebrity status, taking public transit would be risky; the crowded space would make it hard to escape if she was recognized.
As they rode along, Ling Ning noticed that the driver was playing a Bai Yiyue song on repeat. He was likely a big fan of hers.
“Driver, are you a fan of Bai Yiyue’s music?”
They were stuck in traffic, and Bai Yiyue, who tended to get carsick from using her phone, was looking for ways to pass the time.
“Oh, absolutely! I’m a die-hard fan of Miss Bai! I was so disappointed when I missed her concert in our city last time!”
Leaning over, Ling Ning whispered in Bai Yiyue’s ear, “So, how does it feel to be praised by a fan? Does it make you happy?”
“Eh, it’s nothing special,” Bai Yiyue replied coolly. Compliments had lost their novelty long ago; she’d heard them countless times. Early in her career, they might have thrilled her, but now, they barely made an impression.
If she could, she’d trade all those compliments for just one word of praise from Ling Ning.
They spent the rest of the drive chatting with the driver, and soon, they reached their destination. Just as Ling Ning and Bai Yiyue were getting out of the taxi, the driver noticed a neatly folded note on the back seat. Curious, he picked it up, and his eyes went wide as he read the elegant handwriting: “Thank you for your support,” signed with a name he immediately recognized—Bai Yiyue.
The driver’s jaw dropped. He remembered seeing a similar signature in a fan group he belonged to. That meant the girl who had just ridden in his cab, wearing a mask… was *the* Bai Yiyue!
“I… I actually gave Bai Yiyue a ride? And she left me a signature!”
The driver was stunned by this unexpected surprise, sitting in his seat with a goofy smile plastered on his face. Fortunately, he hadn’t started driving yet; otherwise, he might’ve caused an accident.
“Mommy, what’s wrong with that driver?” asked a little girl passing by, pointing at the driver who was grinning in his car.
“Maybe he pulled an SSR on a ten-pull.”
“Isn’t that supposed to be impossible?”
“Exactly, sweetie. That’s why he’s so thrilled~”
“Ohhh~”
