Chapter 184 : Little Miss Chen Ruo
"Huh?! Ling Ning, isn’t your friend coming with us?"
After they reached their destination, Bai Yiyue had excused herself, claiming she had some matters to attend to. Her manager, Wu Zi, was on the verge of blowing up her phone, and if she didn’t show up soon, Wu Zi might actually kill her. Before she left, Bai Yiyue handed Ling Ning a pass card and explained that they could skip the line by showing it to security at the staff entrance.
"Well, she had something to take care of, so she left first. We’ll probably see her again tonight," Ling Ning replied casually, not technically lying since they’d indeed see Bai Yiyue at the concert.
"Oh..." Xu Qing nodded, glancing at her phone to check the time. It was still early, as they’d come over right after lunch. Thinking it over, she suggested, "We still have a while before the concert opens. Why don’t we split up and browse around? We can meet back here when it’s time."
With a quick gesture, Xu Qing dismissed the group, and soon, everyone scattered, leaving just Ling Ning and her daughter.
Since Ling Ning hadn’t planned to browse, she felt awkward standing around with just her daughter. With plenty of time left, she leaned down and asked, "Ling Ye, would you like to go somewhere and look around?"
Ling Ye shook her head. "Wherever Mom goes, I’ll go."
"Alright, then let’s wander a bit."
So, Ling Ning and her daughter began a leisurely stroll around the streets near the stadium, joining the crowds of people talking excitedly about Bai Yiyue’s concert.
Some fans had even traveled from other cities just for the event. Ling Ning couldn’t help but be impressed by Bai Yiyue’s star power. Then she thought, with a bit of mischief, how shocked these fans would be if they knew the real Bai Yiyue.
After some time, Ling Ning started feeling tired and glanced around for a place to rest. That’s when she noticed a small, anxious figure nearby.
It was a young girl, Chen Ruo, who was nervously scanning her surroundings. She’d been so absorbed in playing "FGO♂" that she’d lost track of her daughter. When she finally looked up, her daughter was nowhere in sight.
To make matters worse, her phone had run out of battery from gaming, and her power bank was in her daughter’s bag. Surrounded by unfamiliar scenery, she realized there was no easy way to get back.
What now? She could almost imagine herself getting dragged away by some creepy stranger, only to be taken to a deserted alley and… Chen Ruo shook her head to banish the absurd thoughts. She’d clearly been reading too many of master AS109’s urban horror stories, which had overfed her imagination.
"Oh no, I’m in a crisis of epic proportions!" she muttered to herself.
"And what crisis would that be?" Ling Ning asked, watching her with a blank expression. She’d been observing Chen Ruo’s alternating expressions of fear and excitement for a while, unable to guess what was going through her head.
Hearing the familiar voice, Chen Ruo spun around excitedly. "Oh wow, Ling Ning! What are you doing here?" She immediately dove into Ling Ning’s arms to pour out her woes, a gesture she often shared with her daughter, somehow feeling instinctively drawn to Ling Ning.
Ling Ye glared daggers at Chen Ruo. This shameless woman was cuddling with her mom! She was clearly too comfortable in Ling Ning’s embrace. Why did she seem so experienced at it?
After a moment, Chen Ruo seemed to remember that she was hugging someone who wasn’t her daughter. Embarrassed, she quickly pulled back, her face flushed to the ears.
"S-s-sorry! I... I didn’t mean to… it just sort of… happened..." She stammered, unable to finish her sentence.
"Never mind that. The important thing is where you and your daughter got separated," Ling Ning replied calmly.
From Chen Ruo’s ramblings, Ling Ning had pieced together that this petite woman had somehow gotten separated from her daughter. Honestly, it was a miracle Chen Ruo hadn’t already been snatched up by some weirdo.
"Uh... where was it?" Chen Ruo tilted her head, trying to recall.
Watching her struggle, Ling Ning could only sigh. She didn’t even remember where she’d gotten lost? What could she say to that?
Finally, Chen Ruo seemed to remember and pointed to a supermarket not far away. "I got separated from... I mean, lost my daughter at the supermarket!"
"Are you sure? Positive you’re not mistaken?" Ling Ning asked skeptically.
Pouting, Chen Ruo put on her most “intimidating” face. "Of course not! With my memory, I wouldn’t get that wrong."
Smiling at her attempt to be fierce, Ling Ning nodded, taking both Ling Ye and Chen Ruo by the hand and leading them toward the supermarket.
As she held onto Ling Ning’s warm hand, Chen Ruo felt a sudden warmth in her heart. How could someone as gentle as Ling Ning be anything but trustworthy? Her daughter must have misunderstood something.
It turned out Chen Ruo’s memory was spot-on. Just as they entered the supermarket, the PA system announced, "Attention, Chen Ruo. Chen Ruo, please proceed to the first-floor elevator area. Your sister, Lin Yue, is waiting for you."
The group barely had time to react before the announcement repeated, "If any customers see a petite young girl around 150 cm, wearing a Gothic dress, with long hair and a black-and-white bear hair clip, and looking adorably clueless, please contact the service desk."
Chen Ruo froze in place, while Ling Ning and her daughter burst into laughter, unable to help themselves. Other customers started glancing in her direction as well.
Seeing that Chen Ruo was about to cry from embarrassment, Ling Ning stifled her laughter and walked over, gently patting her soft hair to comfort her. “Alright, alright~ She’s just worried about you, that’s all. And you’re a grown woman; you’re not really going to cry, are you?”
"Who’s crying?!" Chen Ruo mumbled, eyes closed contentedly as Ling Ning stroked her hair. The comforting gesture made her nose stop tingling, and as Ling Ning withdrew her hand, she felt an unexpected pang of loss.
