Chapter 152 : The Housewife Who’s Anything But
"Li Qian is such a stingy person. All I did was take an extra sip of her drink, did she really need to bite me so hard?" Ling Ning grumbled to herself, walking down the road to her house, holding her hand up to her face.
On her pristine white hand was a neat set of teeth marks. It hadn’t broken the skin, but it hurt like hell.
As she passed by the supermarket, it occurred to her that, since tomorrow was the start of her vacation, she might as well pick up some extra groceries to celebrate. She could even invite Xia You over to share the meal~
With that pleasant thought, Ling Ning cheerfully entered the supermarket. She had zero interest in anything that didn’t have a "-50%" or "-30%" sale tag.
She ignored all the full-price items and headed straight for the fresh produce section. She’d already planned out what ingredients she’d need, so without wasting any time, she grabbed everything on her list and headed for the checkout.
As she made her way to the checkout counter, she suddenly remembered that her daughter was out of snacks. It was time to restock. Heading to the snack aisle, she spotted a familiar figure—a petite woman stretching as far as she could to reach a bag of spicy sticks on the top shelf.
Narrowing her eyes, Ling Ning took a closer look. Wasn’t this the loli-looking housewife, Mrs. Chen Ruo, whom she’d attended the parent-teacher meeting with?
Despite Chen Ruo's best efforts to stand on her toes, her height was just not enough.
Ling Ning couldn’t stand by and watch any longer. She walked over and grabbed the bag of spicy sticks for her.
"Th-thank you~" Chen Ruo smiled, taking the spicy sticks. Suddenly, her eyes widened in recognition, staring at Ling Ning. "Y-you, you’re Ling Ning?!"
She couldn’t believe her eyes. The girl in front of her looked nothing like the housewife she’d met at the parent-teacher meeting some time ago. It was impossible to reconcile this youthful girl with that housewife.
"What’s the matter? It’s only been a little while—did you forget about me?" Ling Ning smiled.
"N-no, it’s just that you look… so different."
"It’s just some practical application of makeup skills~ By the way, you’re shopping here, does that mean you live nearby?"
Chen Ruo nodded and, without any hesitation, gave Ling Ning her home address and contact information, completely disregarding her daughter’s warning of "Don’t give our home address and contact info to strangers." Besides, Ling Ning wasn’t exactly a stranger.
To Chen Ruo, Ling Ning was a wonderful person who had helped her twice. She had such a beautiful smile—how could someone like that be anything but good?
If Ling Ning knew what Chen Ruo was thinking, she would have sighed: "Lady, it’s a miracle you haven’t been abducted yet."
The two "housewives who were anything but" left the supermarket with their purchases. At the entrance, they saw a young girl with twin-tails leaning against a tree, playing with her phone in boredom.
It was, without a doubt, Chen Ruo’s daughter, Lin Yue. Somehow, Lin Yue seemed to sense her mother’s presence, and the moment Chen Ruo walked out of the supermarket, she immediately put down her phone and approached her.
When Lin Yue saw Ling Ning standing beside her mother, the smile in her eyes instantly turned into a wary glare. She had a deep impression of this classmate's mom. Even though she now looked younger, Lin Yue recognized her immediately. That sense of danger was something she’d never forget.
"Eh?! Yue Yue! Weren’t you at home? Why did you come all the way out here?" Chen Ruo didn’t even notice her daughter’s expression. After all, she knew her daughter very well—Lin Yue always reacted this way whenever strangers were around. Chen Ruo was used to it by now.
"Who knows if you’d get lost or not, with that terrible sense of direction of yours. I didn’t want to starve waiting for you to find your way back." Though Lin Yue complained, she still obediently took a large part of the groceries from her mother’s hands.
"How rude! I’m your mom, you know! And it’s not that far. I wouldn’t get lost, not for such a short distance!" Chen Ruo puffed up her cheeks, trying her best to appear authoritative. However, to Ling Ning and Lin Yue, she just looked like she was deliberately acting cute.
"Oh, by the way, we should thank Mrs. Ling Ning today. If it weren’t for her, Mom might not have gotten her spicy sticks this week~" Chen Ruo turned around while speaking, only to find that Ling Ning had vanished at some point.
"Mom, I told you before, you shouldn’t eat so much of those junky spicy sticks. And stay away from that lady, too."
"Eh~ Mrs. Ling Ning is such a nice person, though."
"Just listen to me, will you!"

"Xia You, Xia You! Come out, it’s time to eat~"
Ling Ning waited outside Xia You’s door for a while, but there was no response. That was odd—she’d clearly called her before cooking.
Ling Ning was about to call Xia You again when she noticed that the door was slightly ajar. After a moment's thought, she pushed it open and walked in. Xia You’s apartment had a similar layout to her own, and this wasn’t her first time visiting. Seeing that Xia You’s room door was shut, she walked over and gave it a gentle knock. "Xia You, are you in there?"
Inside Xia You’s room.
Xia You was lying quietly on her bed, headphones on. After finishing her exams today, she’d intended to just lie down for a bit and listen to Ling Ning’s voice, but before she knew it, her eyelids had grown heavy, and she’d drifted off to sleep.
Hearing the knock on her door, Xia You's long eyelashes fluttered slightly before she slowly opened her eyes. She thought she’d heard Ling Ning calling her. She took off her headphones, and sure enough, she could hear Ling Ning’s voice—it was coming from right outside her door?!
In an instant, Xia You was fully awake.
She looked around her room—if Ling Ning came in and saw all this, she’d definitely die of embarrassment. Without hesitation, Xia You quickly pulled down all the photos hanging on the wall and shoved them under the bed. The body pillow and chibi Ling Ning plushie went into the closet, along with the rest of her collection.
Once she was sure nothing was left out, Xia You walked over to the door, making herself look like she’d just woken up.
"S-sorry, I accidentally fell asleep."
"It’s fine. I just wanted to let you know that dinner’s ready. Oh, and your door wasn’t properly closed. You should be more careful next time. It’s a good thing I found it—who knows what could have happened if it were someone with bad intentions."
As she spoke, Ling Ning glanced around Xia You’s room. She thought she’d heard the sound of something being hastily hidden, but everything looked fine now. Maybe she’d imagined it.
"Alright, I’ll just wash my face real quick, and then I’ll come over."
"Mm."
No sooner had Ling Ning left than the closet door suddenly burst open, and everything inside came tumbling out. Xia You looked at the mess and breathed a sigh of relief—it seemed like fate was on her side today.
