Evading the Hero’s Party with Full Effort

Chapter 181

Ch.181 Don’t Tell Me I Have to Find Selena Here…?

Seeing Selena with a belly as round as Namsan Mountain, I couldn’t quite grasp what kind of situation this was.

Is this inside Selena’s consciousness?

—Flap!

Watching her unfold what I assumed was my pants and hang them on the clothesline, my mind grew tangled.

Why is this happening?

Doesn’t it feel like we’re married or something?

Especially that belly—clearly not ordinary at all.

No… why must responsibility come without pleasure…?

I am chaste.

Then why is Selena’s stomach swollen?

Judging by the circumstances, I seem to be the father.

Haha—how does this even work?

When I glanced at her, Selena turned her head.

“What? Did you do something wrong to me?”

She blinked her crimson eyes, looking puzzled.

“No? Nothing like that.”

“You’re suspicious…”

She slowly approached and examined my face.

“You’re really not hiding anything?”

“I told you, no.”

“Hmm?”

As Selena studied my face, I took a step back—

—Whoosh!

Suddenly, she hugged me tightly.

—Smooch!

“That’s enough.”

She smiled bashfully.

What’s with this pink, dreamy atmosphere?

She nearly killed me before…

Does she really love me?

I’d half-suspected it, but my chest felt tight.

—Flap!

She looked genuinely happy hanging laundry beside me.

Doesn’t she know this is all a dream?

Or is she pretending not to know, despite knowing?

Soon, the laundry was done.

Clothes lined the long clothesline.

With warm spring sunshine and a cool breeze, the mood was perfect—

“Lunchtime now. Are you hungry? I’ll fix you something.”

With that, Selena went inside.

“Hmph…”

I looked around.

If this is truly Selena’s subconscious… Davinus or the Church of Death folks should be lurking nearby.

“Hans?”

At the voice calling my name, I turned—

A man stood at the gate.

Is that Davinus?

Cardinal Davinus of the Church of Death pretended to know me, which was awkward.

I had no idea what relationship I had with him here.

Davinus, looking grim, stepped into the yard.

“Sleep well?”

“Oh… yeah.”

What’s our relationship?

Selena and I seemed married—

otherwise, she wouldn’t be pregnant. Her behavior clearly implied a marital bond.

“Where’s Selena?”

“She’s inside.”

At my words, Davinus looked surprised.

“Huh? So you’re switching to informal speech now?”

Should I be speaking formally to him?

As I darted my eyes, plotting how to escape this mess—

“Oh? Big brother’s here?”

Selena opened the door and stepped into the yard.

“Selena?”

“Oh! I was just about to ask you to call him. Come on in.”

What? Davinus is Selena’s older brother?

My head started to ache.

“But Hans seems strange.”

Davinus eyed me with concern.

“Now that you mention it, he did seem a bit off earlier.”

Selena also looked worried.

“Are you okay? Does anything hurt?”

She reached out and placed her hand on my forehead—giving me an odd feeling.

Who would ever think this gentle woman was a fanatic?

Well, Davinus was gloomy, sure—but Selena was bright, cheerful, and beautiful.

“Hmm… no fever.”

Her cool hand touched my brow.

She really was stunning—

one of the few whose beauty could rival the Hero Party’s.

To reassure her, I replied gently:

“I’m just not feeling well.”

Anyway, Davinus clearly outranked me here.

“You sure you’re fine? Rest if you’re sick.”

“Haha… okay, I’ll rest a bit.”

“Mm-hmm!”

Selena trailed after me like a puppy.

Inside, I found a cozy interior filled with the rich scent of butter.

Was she cooking?

Selena did cook well.

“Come on, over here.”

She took my hand and led me inward.

—Creak.

When she opened the door, I saw a snug bedroom with a bed and wardrobe.

The bed was perfectly sized for two, with a mirror, wardrobe, desk, and chair.

“Lie down and rest. I’ll bring you soup.”

“Uh… okay.”

I lay down as instructed. Selena stared at me a moment, then left the room.

“Hmph… I really don’t get it.”

This must be Selena’s consciousness—but

I quietly got up and opened the wardrobe.

Inside were pretty women’s clothes and men’s attire.

On the desk lay exchanged letters and notes.

Warm sunlight streamed through the window.

It truly looked like a picture-perfect life.

“Is this what she truly desires?”

If this is indeed Selena’s mind, she must long for a quiet life with someone she loves.

“Sigh… but what now?”

I’d entered her consciousness but had no clue what to do next.

Though I could bluntly say ‘The God of Death is deceiving you,’ gathering intel first seemed wiser.

“Maybe I should just rest a bit.”

Lying down, Selena’s scent tickled my nose.

So we really sleep together here?

I recognized it instantly—we’d shared rooms and even tents during past travels.

Perhaps this is the paradise the God of Death fabricated to deceive his followers.

With that thought, I slowly drifted to sleep.

How long had I slept?

Something poked my cheek.

“Hans, stop sleeping.”

—Poke poke.

“Hans? Wake up and eat.”

I woke to a familiar voice.

“Hmm? Selena?”

“Time to eat.”

She sat on the edge of the bed, holding a tray with soup and utensils.

“Here, potato soup today.”

I took the tray carefully.

“Thanks. I’ll eat well.”

I took a spoonful—it was actually quite good.

Potato soup is usually bland, tasting faintly of starch.

But this…

“This is pretty tasty?”

“Hehe—I’ve always been good at cooking, right?”

After I finished the soup, she asked:

“How’s your body feeling?”

“Not bad.”

“Nothing hurts?”

She looked worried, so I shook my head.

“I’m really fine.”

“Phew… thank goodness.”

Then she half-lidded her eyes and pinched my cheek.

“If you don’t feel well, just say so.”

“I really am okay.”

Honestly, the problem wasn’t my body—it was not knowing who ‘I’ was here or what my relationship was with anyone.

What’s my connection to Davinus?

I guessed I was close to Selena, but how would I know?

I wasn’t even a real resident of this world.

—Clack…

Selena carefully gathered the dishes.

“I’ll wash these. Rest a bit more.”

And she left.

She seemed pregnant… is she alright?

Then again—it’s not real pregnancy, right?

“Am I really… the father here?”

She looked almost full-term…

This situation was seriously confusing.

I wanted to grab the God of Death by the collar and yell: Stop playing with people’s hearts!

Roy, Selena—even Davinus—were all led here by the God of Death’s lies.

“What a vile god.”

As I muttered that—

“Hm? Who?”

Selena opened the door and entered.

“Oh—nothing.”

I gave an awkward smile.

“Hehe—the old gods were pretty bad, weren’t they?”

She sat beside me, smiling faintly.

“But now we have a true god guiding us—so forget the old ones.”

“Huh?”

“Hehe.”

She snuggled into my arms.

Wait… could this be a worldline where the God of Death won?

“Hans?”

Her voice came from my chest.

“Yeah? What?”

She sat up, pouting.

“Why didn’t you hug me tight?”

Was I supposed to?

Selena stared at me intently.

“You’re not… looking at other women now that I’m pregnant, are you?”

“No! Haha—I’m just lost in thought today…”

I hugged the clearly upset Selena tightly.

Is… is this how it’s done?

“Hmm… I love you, Hans.”

She nestled into me happily.

While holding her close, I raced through possibilities in my mind.

If this is a world imagined under the assumption we lost…

“Hans… do you still regret it? Following those false gods back then?”

Her voice was sorrowful.

Not at all.

The world she hoped for would never come.

The God of Death isn’t merciful—

he’s filled with jealousy and malice.

He cursed creation with death and envied other gods.

And now he promises eternal paradise after death?

That’s laughable—even a passing dog would scoff.

“Don’t blame yourself so much. Yes, you made a mistake—but the God of Death saved you, didn’t he?”

She looked up at me with pity in her eyes.

Ah… seriously…

The God of Death really is trash.

To brainwash someone this thoroughly…

I stroked Selena’s hair.

“Selena… listen…”

Should I say it?

Would it be too rash?

But I had to speak—

she needed to face reality and expel the King of the Dead from her body.

If that thing possessed her, we’d never beat Roy.

“You have something to say?”

At her gentle question, I nodded.

“Then tell me. What do you want to say?”

She softly caressed my cheek.

What… should I say?

That the God of Death is fake?

That she’s been tricked by a liar?

Or should I reveal the truth?

After long hesitation, I spoke carefully:

“The God of Death hasn’t been unsealed yet. I’m Hans—from the real world.”

“What?”

She didn’t understand, so I continued:

“I’m here inside your mind to drive the King of the Dead out of your body—the one with Infinite Regression.”

“W-what are you talking about?”

Her voice trembled sharply.

Did Selena know what was happening outside?

I wasn’t sure—but I felt she must.

“Deep down… you can see outside, can’t you? It’s still your body, after all.”

Her expression grew cold.

“You think I’ll believe you?”

“I didn’t come here to fight you. It’s about the God of Death you trust so blindly…”

Selena pulled away and glared at me.

“Shut up! Shut up, you despicable heretic!”

“Selena! Just listen to me!”

“Disappear! Get out of my dream!”

As she said that, the scenery abruptly changed.

Now I stood in a snowy forest.

“Huh? Where is this?”

—Chirp chirp.

Snow dusted the conifers; birds chirped. I was bewildered.

“A forest? Did I just teleport here?”

Since Selena controlled this consciousness world, it clearly reflected her emotions.

A winter forest…

—Whoosh!

The biting wind made my bones ache.

“Don’t tell me… I actually have to find Selena here…?”
