Invincible through Touching Corpses

Chapter 156 - 155: Steamroll

For a moment, everyone suspected their ears were playing tricks on them.

They had all braced themselves, expecting that the mission from Lin Xinghai, while perhaps not exceptionally difficult, would be anything but easy.

But now...

"Did I mishear? We only need to collect Elemental Crystals?"

"I thought I’d misheard too. But if you heard the same thing, maybe it wasn’t us who got it wrong—maybe the Gun God misspoke."

"Maybe the Gun God is just joking. If it were really this simple, why would he go to the trouble and expense of recruiting elite members like us?"

Immediately, the group burst into discussion.

But you could hardly blame them. After all, the prospect of earning 80,000 Points in a single day was enough to send anyone’s imagination into overdrive.

Many had entertained all sorts of wild theories, so they found it hard to accept that Lin Xinghai’s request was so simple.

However, as they watched, Lin Xinghai finished speaking, turned, and signaled for the Armored Vehicle to advance slowly.

’Could this actually be real?’

This thought surfaced in everyone’s mind.

They didn’t have much time to ponder the question, however. As the Armored Vehicle moved forward, it quickly drew the attention of a Zombie horde on the city’s outskirts.

ROAR! ROAR! ROAR!

The horde of Zombies roared in excitement as they charged the convoy.

The members of the Mountain and Sea Mercenary Corps tensed up instantly. While the horde wasn’t large—only fifteen Zombies—it included three Intermediate Zombies.

For a Mercenary Corps that hadn’t yet fought together as a unit, this was a considerable threat. More importantly, they were all outside the Armored Vehicle. Without the protection of its thick armor, the risk was exponentially higher.

Every Mercenary gripped their firearm nervously. They didn’t know what Lin Xinghai’s plan was, but they weren’t about to just stand around like fools. If the horde closed to within fifty meters and Lin Xinghai still hadn’t given the order, they would absolutely open fire themselves.

As the horde drew nearer, they could practically hear their own hearts pounding faster. These were veteran Mercenaries. Without any orders, their combat instincts kicked in, and they automatically formed simple Defense Arrays in groups of two and three.

Lin Xinghai couldn’t help but nod at the sight. ’Elite Mercenaries recruited with such high pay really are a different breed.’

But with Lin Xinghai around, their actions were ultimately unnecessary.

To the Mercenaries’ astonishment, Lin Xinghai opened fire from the vehicle’s roof the moment the horde stepped within 200 meters of the convoy.

Wielding a pistol in each hand, he squeezed the triggers with a practiced rhythm. The fifteen charging Zombies fell like stalks of wheat, and even the three Intermediate Zombies were completely powerless to resist.

In less than three seconds, every last one of them had been shot in the head and had collapsed to the ground.

The Mercenaries, who had been on high alert, were now frozen in place as if struck by an Immobilization Technique.

’What did we just see? He opened fire from 200 meters away, and every single bullet hit its mark.’

More importantly, the speed of his kills was something none of them had ever witnessed. Even if all of them worked together, they weren’t confident they could eliminate all fifteen Zombies in under three seconds.

’So this is the Gun God?’

When they finally snapped out of it, all the new members stared at the young figure on the vehicle’s roof with reverence.

At the same time, they also understood why Lin Xinghai’s mission for them was just to collect Elemental Crystals.

It was true. With Lin Xinghai on overwatch, there was no need for them to shoot. Not that they could, of course—none of them were capable of hitting a sprinting Zombie from 200 meters away.

The Armored Vehicle continued to move forward slowly, while the other members, under Gao Mountain’s direction, quickly collected the Elemental Crystals.

Normally, collecting Elemental Crystals in the city was no easy feat. The sound of gunfire and the scent of blood would inevitably attract more Zombies from the surrounding area.

You could even end up in a situation where fighting only drew in more and more Zombies, until you were finally surrounded by a horde and killed.

This wasn’t just fearmongering. According to the Mercenary Guild’s records, incidents like that had happened more than ten times.

But with Lin Xinghai, there was no need to worry. As long as he could kill the Zombies faster than they could arrive, it wouldn’t be a problem.

Horde after horde rushed forward, only to fall one after another under Lin Xinghai’s twin pistols.

At first, the Mercenaries were extremely vigilant while collecting the Elemental Crystals. They were afraid that Lin Xinghai might miss a Zombie, or that he might get overwhelmed and fail to kill them all in time.

Gradually, however, they discovered that it didn’t matter. Whether the Zombies charged as a group or approached one by one, whether they came from the front, the back, or leaped suddenly from the shadows, Lin Xinghai seemed to anticipate everything, killing them the instant they appeared.

Not a single Zombie managed to get within 100 meters of the convoy. It was as if an invisible line of death had been drawn.

It only took a little over ten minutes for their mindset to shift from shock, to calm, to simply getting used to it.

And so, the convoy advanced in a wild, unstoppable rampage, steamrolling every Zombie in its path. All the Zombies they encountered, whether Intermediate or High Level, were utterly powerless to resist.

’Perhaps only a Mutated Zombie could stop this rampage,’ a Mercenary thought.

But then he saw the Mecha on standby and remembered the video of Lin Xinghai taking on a Mutated Zombie one-on-one. He realized that with their Mercenary Corps’ strength, even a Mutated Zombie could be killed outright if it showed up.

They wouldn’t be like other First Level Mercenary Corps, who could only rely on a Mecha to delay it and then flee in a panic.

And in fact, Lin Xinghai had indeed made preparations to deal with Mutated Zombies. This time, the Special Bullets prepared by Gao Mountain included not only the standard Armor-Piercing and Burning Bullets, but also a considerable number of Corrosive Bullets.

Having used them against a Mecha once before, Lin Xinghai had fallen in love with Corrosive Bullets. He was confident he could kill a Mutated Zombie as long as Gao Mountain could keep it occupied for three to five minutes.

However, for the remainder of their journey—whether by good fortune or bad—they didn’t encounter a single Mutated Zombie, leaving Lin Xinghai feeling a little disappointed.

The other Mercenaries, however, felt no such disappointment. They simply continued the repetitive motion of splitting open Zombie skulls and extracting the Elemental Crystals.

They had initially thought the mission was easy, but after the excitement wore off, they slowly began to find the task utterly tedious and grueling.

After all, collecting Elemental Crystals for ten or twenty minutes might have been fine. But doing it for an hour, then two, and then for four or five straight hours—what was that, if not torture?

Worse, they couldn’t afford to be slow. Lin Xinghai was killing Zombies so quickly that the number of Points they earned was entirely dependent on how fast they could harvest the Elemental Crystals.

The very idea would have seemed absurd to them before, but now, it was their reality.

In the end, the team spent a full five hours clearing all the Zombies from the exploration zone. After that, they circled the area a few more times before they finally collected 3,000 Elemental Crystals.

At that point, Lin Xinghai checked the Time and finally called a halt.

"Rest here for half an hour," Lin Xinghai announced. "After that, practice your Gun Technique. I will set aside an hour to personally instruct a few of the more outstanding members."
