Chapter 289 – Lime

Sophia and Mira were in the overseer's domain, and the teal fox asked her to burn down a portion of a forest there to see how her new and much more powerful magic behaves. The tiger accidentally deleted half of the forest and turned the ground into obsidian, so she spent the next couple of hours getting used to her new authority.

“Sophia!” The blonde returned home after her training and was immediately crushed in a tight hug by Chloe the moment she saw her after entering the living room. “Do you have any idea how much you worried us when you looked half-dead the other day?!”

“I’d like to get greeted like this every day from now on.” She returned the hug while enjoying the feeling of the soft fox-girl pressed against her as she looked in Steph’s direction, who was sitting on one of the sofas with Anna and Ari.

"A fair and valid reaction.” Her little sister reacted with a thumbs-up. “I approve.”

“Well, there’s not much I can say there after Chloe.” Maya, standing next to her, awkwardly scratched her cheek. “What happened, though? As our fox said, we were worried! You’ve been sleeping the entire time, so I haven't even gotten the chance to ask you yet. Weren’t you supposed to be indestructible?! Also, the rule of you never being without supervision will be enforced much more strictly from now on!"

“Absolutely!” The jaguar nodded a few times. “We’ve been far too lenient with you lately in that regard!”

“Ahaha…” Sophia looked a little guilty because she had nothing to defend herself with.

"So, am I the only one noticing the not-blue but green bird?” Anna naturally was also happy that her fellow tiger was healthy again, but she quickly got distracted and pointed at Lime sitting on top of Sophia’s head, right between her ears. It was just her, too, as Blu probably didn’t want to deal with the situation.

“Oh, you’re right!” Even though Chloe had been tightly hugging Sophia until a moment ago, she completely missed that. She then slowly held out her hand towards her, and the green parakeet immediately rubbed her head against it while letting out a cheerful chirp. “Wait! Why is this new bird just as strong as Blu?!” She had really been focusing only on the tiger and nothing else.

“Her name is Lime.” Sophia smiled at the fox. “Limes, Limey, and similar nicknames are fine, too~.”

*Chirrp~* The bird in question lifted her wing to greet them all.

“Lime…?” Steph stared at her sister again before glancing at the green bird. “It’s definitely you who came with that name, right?” She knew the blonde’s naming sense after all.

“I’ll fight you if you don't agree that it’s a cute name for her!” Sophia started pouting as she glared at her.

*Chirrp!!!* Lime also didn’t appreciate that.

“I never said it was a bad name!” The dog-girl rapidly shook her head. “Just, after Blu, who you also named, it was rather on the nose.”

“True.” The other girls agreed with her.

“Mrmm…” She had mixed feelings about that.

“So, why do you have another Blu-class bird now?!” Chloe got back on track.

“That’s, uhh, that’s a long story.” Sophia wasn’t sure where to start.

“WHAT IN THE NAME OF EVERYTHING HOLY HAPPENED TO YOU?!” Aura and Fen joined the group in the living room from the hallways, and the two had the exact same reaction when they laid their eyes on the short tiger.

“That’s, err, that’s an even longer story.”

“What do you mean?” The pink fox tilted her head while looking at the wolves. “I don’t remember either of you being too worried before, so there’s no need to have such a strong reaction now that she’s fine again.”

“FINE?!” Aura got even louder. “That’s not what I’d call fine!”

“Have you looked at her AUTHORITY?!” Fen also raised his voice even more.

“Not really?” Her confusion kept growing. “Lime, the new mysterious bird friend, is so overwhelming that it’s hard to detect anything else.” Taking that as a cue, Lime flew over to Steph and landed on her shoulder before rubbing her head against her cheek to greet the sister of her creator. “H-HUH?!” Once she got a clear view of Sophia, her expression instantly changed.

“WHAT?!” The other girls quickly followed suit.

“Haa…” The blonde was already missing the comfortable bed she had spent the last week in.

----------------

Everyone, including Sophia, sat down while everyone was staring daggers at the girl because there was way too much going on with her that they had missed.

“Why is your authority 40 times more than it was last week?!” Aura was the one staring the hardest at her.

“My authority did not grow 40 times.” Sophia tried her luck. After all, it wasn’t right.

“I’ll rip your head off if you try to deceive me now.” The female wolf stared right at her while slowly shaking her head as she bared her teeth.

“I’m, according to Mira, a little over 52 times stronger compared to when you last saw me.”

“HOW?!” Aura’s very being turned intense.

“What she said!” The male wolf nodded along. “That makes no sense!”

“Since when do I need to make sense to you?” The blonde cutely tilted her head.

“Do you want to get jumped by two wolves?” He didn’t appreciate that, either.

“You’ll be jumping me regardless after you hear what’s going on.” It wasn’t really a threat to her. “I did something a little ridiculous. Even for my standards.” She then gently petted Lime's head, who had returned to her shoulder, and responded with a sweet chirp as she pressed herself against the hand.

“Does the bird have anything to do with what is going on?” Seeing how Sophia petted her while saying that, Chloe instantly got suspicious. “In the first place, I never understood why Blu is with you. I know that there are many magic animals in Mira’s domain because it's overflowing with magic for obvious reasons, but why is Blu living here? Now, after having spent the day with Mira once more, you’re suddenly healthy again and have a second overpowered friend! Is she bribing you with animals from her domain to keep a secret or something?!” Just like the blonde, Chloe was weirdly sharp about the oddest things.

“Lime isn't a gift from Mira, though." Luckily, the fox worded it in such a way that made it easy for Sophia to talk around the secret part. “She’s not from her domain, either.”

“That doesn’t make any sense, though.” Chloe wasn’t letting her go. All things magic and involving her mother interested her greatly after all. “Animals like that don’t exist outside her domain!”

“Lime’s native to my domain.” Sophia lightly shook her head.

“Ohh!” The pink girl energetically clapped her hands. “So, it’s a domain thing? That makes a lot more sense! Wait, it doesn’t!” She suddenly got loud. “You can’t tell me that animals filled to the brim with magic suddenly show up in domains!”

“They certainly don’t.” The blonde agreed with her. “I, uhh… I created Limes, just like, well, Mira created Blu before.” She awkwardly scratched her cheek.

“YOU DID WHAT?!” Every single one of them had the exact same reaction.

*Chirrp~!” The little parakeet happily raised her wing in response.

“Nuh-uh!” Chloe vigorously shook her head. “There’s simply no way you can just create living beings like that! Especially ones that are way stronger than yourself!”

“There was nothing simple or just about creating Lime.” Sophia looked back at her. “Why do you think I was out cold for like a week? It was BY FAR the hardest and most painful thing I did in my life.”

“It still doesn’t make any sense, though!” The fox wasn’t letting her go anytime soon. “I can’t see how you’d be able to create something with more power than yourself! Painful and hard or not, but that’s a way too big loophole!”

“I did not create her with less magic than her current authority.” The blonde shook her head again. “I mentioned the other day that I’m constantly pumping raw magic into my domain through the portal on my neck, right? Similar to how you and Steph have one in your tail. I’m just a lot more excessive with it and have been doing it constantly over the last couple of months. So much that, besides the regular biome stuff, I amassed waaay over 1000 times my original authority in a part of my domain. I used that mass to create Lime. It was not an infinite magic glitch.”

“Mrrmm…” Chloe had rather mixed feelings about this revelation and wasn’t sure where to start complaining.

“Before you ask, I did learn it from Mira when she made Blu, and I was merely able to recreate it by hoarding magic for months instead of how she kinda just snapped her fingers to effortlessly bring him to existence.”

“That’s fascinating and all, I definitely want to hear more about it in detail later, but why are you over 50 TIMES STRONGER NOW?!” Aura was losing her patience.

"Limes and that is related, so I’m getting to that soon.” Sophia smiled at her.

“Fine…” The wolf hung her head because the anticipation was killing her.

“Mira created Blu to show me how weak I actually am in the grand scheme of things by showing me what overseers can do. I accepted that, but it doesn’t mean I liked it, so I did my best to make my own bird friend to show her!”

“So you decided to become an overseer yourself…?” Fen wasn't sure he could follow her.

"I still have nowhere near the strength of an overseer. Even now, after my boost.” The blonde shook her head. “I might feel like it to some, but that’s just because sensing the different amounts of magic becomes difficult at some point.”

“That’s still insane.” He had no better words.

“Get to the getting stronger part!” Aura was practically vibrating in anticipation at this point.

“It happened during the creation of Lime.” Sophia rolled her eyes before continuing. “In order to make her, I had to let all the magic flow through me in an instant. Having 1000x your authority in the form of raw magic going through your body does a number on you. It INCREDIBLY PANIFULLY increases your own powers to accommodate it.”

"Like a hole gets stretched when you force a too-big object into it?" Steph immediately had the perfect analogy ready.

“Yeah, it stays gaping a little, right?” Maya understood her perfectly.

“Haa…” The blonde let out another sigh. For various reasons. “Yeah, that’s not too far off the mark.”

“There’s no way you can just simply force an enormous amount of magic through your body and end up being 50 times stronger!” Aura got loud again.

“Exactly!” Chloe agreed with her. “That brings us back to the massive loophole mentioned earlier! No matter how much it hurts!”

“Well, how easy is it for the vast majority of people to amass that much raw magic?" She looked at the loud fox and wolf. "Yes, Chloe could do it in a reasonable amount of time, but how long would it take you, Aura?"

“…” The female wolf turned silent.

“Also, magic normally has rules against that, so it would be impossible to do.” Sophia kept going. “It only worked because I can break the rules thanks to Canir’s magic AND it having happened in my domain. It's way less of a loophole than it sounds.”

“I guess that’s a good point.” Chloe was still pouting, though.

“Also, most importantly, anyone attempting it by somehow tricking the rules would simply die in the process.” Sophia’s expression turned a little awkward. “Your body would just pop like a balloon. I could only do it because, once more, I have Canir’s magic flowing through me, so my body is extra sturdy and can deal with it. Like, you saw in how much pain I was, on top of having been out cold for almost a week. Imagine what would’ve happened to others.”

“Grrr!” Chloe and Aura didn’t like that.

“You willingly risked your life to get stronger?” Maya’s expression suddenly changed.

“I have not!” She instantly shook her head with great vigor. “I made absolutely sure beforehand that it wouldn’t kill me or do any sort of lasting damage in a negative way. On top of that, the goal was to give Blu a friend. I didn't even know that it would make me stronger, just that there was no danger to my life.”

“I see, that’s good then.” It was enough to make the cat-girl calm down again.

Afterward, Sophia explained more about the events because everyone was beyond curious about it, especially the wolves and Chloe. Naturally, she made sure to leave out the sapient magic part, like she had promised Mira, as it wasn't needed to tell the story.
