Chapter 287 – Titles

Sophia was still recovering from her little magic excursion that ended with the creation of Lime, her new green parakeet friend. On that topic, she also found out that Blu was a boy while the new bird is a girl. Afterward, Mira came for a visit, scolded her a little, and revealed that the tiger's magic authority rose by over 50 times because she did something that was supposed to be impossible and permanently altered her body in the process.

“W-What do you mean… My authority is 52 times stronger than last week…?” The blonde still couldn’t believe what she just heard.

“52.12 times to be exact, but yes.” Mira reacted with a small nod.

“No one needs information that precise!” She raised her voice before shaking her head.

“I disagree.”

"I can see that magic and you have influenced each other's personalities!"

“Thank you very much~.” It was a compliment for the overseer of magic.

"Still, there's absolutely no way!" Sophia got back to the topic at hand. “I definitely would feel it if I were to have over 50 times more magic inside of me!”

“You’ve been in bed for days while your body is adapting to it, and you just started recovering. What exactly do you think you should be feeling besides sore muscles?”

“…” There was little the blonde could say there. “But, no…” She vehemently shook her head. “If that’s true, it was way too easy to get that much stronger so fast!”

“EASY?!” Mira actually got loud.

“For getting a 50x multiplier on my power, yes.” Sophia nodded a few times.

“You seriously don’t have the slightest idea what you pulled off, have you?”

“How would I?”

“Hah.” The overseer went silent for a moment. “Not the worst point you made so far. Even so, what you did was anything but easy. In the first place, it was only possible because you have your own domain, because otherwise you wouldn't have been able to amass this much ambient magic in one place to store for later use."

“Okay, fair enough, that does limit the circle of people being able to pull it off by a lot.”

“Magic also would deny most to even try, so being in a domain in one way or another would bring you any closer, anyway. Last, but very not least, there exist exactly two people, besides official overseers, who would even survive having 1000 times their authority pass through them in an instant."

"I'm starting to understand the not-easy part." The tiger scratched her cheek. “Wait, I’m probably able to survive it because Canir’s boosts and his blank magic or whatever, but who is the other person?”

“Chloe, of course.” Mira smiled at her. “I abused every single one of my powers as an overseer to make absolutely sure that nothing could seriously harm her. Anyway, she might be weaker than you, but she’s way more invincible than you’ll ever be.”

“I have so much to learn from you and Fey when it comes to being overprotective.” The blonde gave her a thumbs-up. “I’ll definitely be asking for some courses when I become a mother! I'll be skipping the how to raise children lessons by you two, though.” She got a little awkward towards the end.

“Fair and understandable.” The overseer had nothing to defend herself with in that regard.

“Back on the topic, fair enough that it isn’t easy for everyone but me, but for me it is. What keeps me from doing this over and over again to keep growing? Besides the pain, that is.

“Well, you’re now over 50 times stronger, which means the raw magic needed for the same jump will be at least 50 times more, too. How do you think 50 times the magic would feel on the pain scale? It may be the same gap in percentage, but the absolute amount of ambient magic is much more, after all. Not even including the part where it doesn't scale linearly. You'd need even more.”

“Okay, good argument." Sophia shuddered at the thought of how much worse that would feel. “So, I have to find my limit and do smaller jumps?”

“I’ll leave that up to you.” The overseer just smiled at her. “So, you’ve decided to become an overseer? You’re now fully officially outside any realm of logical explanation, but you want to grow even more?”

“I want to gain more power to be able to play around more in my domain and make it better and more fun! I definitely do not care for becoming an overseer."

“Well, domains are overseer privileges, so it’s hard to become better at the one thing while also not progressing the other side.”

“I’m not interested in overseeing stuff, though!” She started pouting. “Unless you come up with a more involved title like creator or whatever, I’m out! I want to do things, not overlook them!”

“You want to call yourself thecreator…?” Mira raised an eyebrow in return.

“On second thought, NEVERMIND!” She quickly changed her mind after thinking about it some more. "You get the gist, though!"

“I do, but as an overseer myself, the actual title is just a name. You can be as involved as you want at the end of the day.”

“I also don’t want to specialize in something, though!" Sophia was still far from convinced. "Not to mention that the best position, yours, is already taken!”

“Ehehe, happy to hear that~.” Mira liked her reply. “There’s no rule about overseers needing to be specialized in something. Neither are there rules of one overseer per thing. For example, while Neri is the overseer of nature, and I’m of magic, we often substitute for each other when we're busy with other things. Then, there’s Canir, the overseer of everything and nothing at the same time. Building up on that, you can make up whatever thing you want to oversee. No one will stop you if you want to become the ‘The overseer of having fun’.”

"Hah." Sophia wasn't sure how or what to reply.

“You can also call yourself keeper, guardian, coordinator, caretaker, or whatever else important-sounding word ‘of having fun’.” Mira shrugged. “No one really cares, just creator, like you mentioned, might be a bit much. After all, you have to keep in mind that the suffix will also be your legacy.”

“Are you trying to sell it to me or warn me?”

“Yes.” The teal fox smiled at her again.

"I blame being sick for not having seen that one coming."

“You might want to put some thought into it sooner rather than later, though.”

“Why…?” Sophia suddenly got an even worse feeling about the situation.

“You’re still nowhere near the magic authority of a real overseer, but your new powers are high enough that people with a weaker magic instinct won’t be able to distinguish between you and me from a power standpoint alone.”

“W-What?!” The blonde got loud. “Wait, how weak of an instinct are we talking?!”

“On the level of most of the beastfolk.”

“No way?!” She didn’t like the sound of that. “Well, good thing we’re about to leave for the demon continent! They’re able to tell the difference, right?!”

“They are, yes.” Mira nodded. “There’s a rather sizeable population of the beastfolk on that continent, too, though.”

“…”

“The demons and other sensible races on their continent will probably be even more onto you, though.” Mira had more good news. "Many of them know about the limitations of magic inside living beings. Like, how Aura and Kel maxed out their natural limitations. Before she started hanging out with you and, well, before he ate the sponge ore. Technically, you already were past that line for a while now, but you're good at talking and distracting people away from the topic, so you may have had a chance to fool them. Now, no chance whatsoever anymore. You're going to be the most popular and sought-after person on the demon continent, after us overseers, that is."

“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?” Sophia just stared at her.

"A little bit.” Judging by the size of Mira’s grin, it was more than just a little.

“Show some compassion for the sick!” The tiger started pouting.

“I usually do.” She shrugged. “Unless it’s self-inflicted.”

“Urgh.”

“Well, look on the bright side~.”

"So far, I've only been scolded and received bad news from you!" Sophia just stared at her while shaking her head. “I’ve yet to learn about the good parts. Aside from Limes over here, of course.” She patted the green parakeet on her knees once more. “I already love her to bits, after all.”

*Chirrp~*

“Creating new biomes inside your domain will be a lot easier now.” The overseer smiled at her. “Your cherry blossom biome was quite a bit of work when you made it, right? With your new powers, you can now create the same place, but twice the size, basically with a snap of your fingers.”

“Hah.” The tiger tilted her head. “Okay, I’m sold.”

“Not that you had a choice.”

“Shush now!” Sophia lightly glared at her. “Anyway, now I can’t wait to recover and instantly create a biome! How much longer will it take until my magic is fully there again?”

“The first authority reset will take a good while after such a drastic change. It's also dependent on the ambient magic. The more there is, the faster you'll recover. However, your domain is still kind of empty, so it might take another day or three.”

“The place where I made Lime still has plenty of raw magic floating around. Should I go back there to reset faster?”

“That would be one way to do it.” Mira nodded. “I was thinking of bringing you to my domain, though. You’ll likely recover the moment we step through the portal, and you can test out your powers in a controlled environment. I’m a little worried that you misjudge your strength and accidentally overdo it. More than usual, I mean…” The overseer paused for a second. “I’m a little limited here in your domain, because you’re the owner, after all.”

“Sounds like a plan!” Sophia perked right up after hearing that. Only to collapse back down on the bed because she was too fast and got slightly dizzy.

Once she took her time with getting up and also changed into regular clothes because she didn't feel like wearing her pajamas when going out, the duo, including the birds, left for Mira's domain.
