Chapter 286 – Chirrp
Sophia spent the day with Blu and magic. She had amassed so much raw magic that it became enough for it to be able to communicate with her once more. Sophia used the chance and learned a whole lot. At the end, she decided to use the excess magic to create a magic bird friend for Blu. However, it came with a catch. She was far from powerful enough to pull it off without suffering through extreme pain. Painful enough that it made her scream her lungs out before finally passing out.
A couple of days had passed since then, and Sophia was still recovering in her bed after having fainted that day. Back then, she eventually regained consciousness to some degree after a good while and managed to return home with the help of Blu. Naturally, arriving there, she caused quite the fuss because no one had ever seen the Sophia completely exhausted, pale as a sheet, and seemingly being completely destroyed with no detectable magic. However, she managed to talk them into accepting that she was just tired before heading to bed without saying another word.
“Alright, seems like I’m finally getting better again!" Sophia was sitting in her bed, wearing a comfortable-looking pink pajama, with her upper body resting against a set of fluffy pillows, her lower body beneath the blanket, and her knees angled up beneath it. Sitting there, she stretched her arms above her body to get rid of the last remaining tiredness in her body. “Still, that having brought life to this world caused me to faint and be basically unable to move for multiple days doesn’t bode well for becoming a normal mother.” She awkwardly scratched her cheek over the stupid comparison. “I sure hope that giving birth to a regular child isn't quite as painful as creating you.” She then looked at her knees. “Holy hell, I never was in this much pain before…”
There, two parakeets were sitting, one on each of her knees. The one on the left was Blu, but on the right one, there was someone new. It was a bright green parakeet roughly the same size as Blu.
*Chirrp…* With a voice slightly higher than the blue bird, the green one let out a small chirp while tilting its head.
“Ah, don’t worry, it’s all my own fault because I wanted you too much. You did nothing wrong.” Sophia smiled at the new bird.
*Chirrp!*
“Still, it’s amazing that it worked at all!” The blonde gently patted the head of the green parakeet, who promptly rubbed itself against her palm. “Though, it’s also odd that my magic took so long to recover at all the last couple of days. Even now, it’s not fully topped off from what I can feel. It’s always slower inside the domain because the magic concentration is kinda low, but this is ridiculous.”
*ChirpChirpChirp!* Blu suddenly got loud while flapping around both its wings.
“I’m missing something here, huh?” She took a wild guess at what that meant.
*Chirp!*
“I see.” The tiger had no idea what the bird meant. “Well, I’m sure it can wait because there are way more important things to take care of first!” She focused on the new bright-green parakeet again. “I’m sure you want your own name, right? Like Blu is Blu because I named him like that.”
*Chirrp~!* The parakeet started bopping up and down after hearing that.
“Be warned, though, I’m really bad with coming up with names.” Sophia got slightly awkward after seeing how excited the bird got. “It should also go along with Blu’s name, so things will be even more challenging.” She then paused for a second. “I have thought of something already, but it’s kinda boring, so I’m not sure how you feel about it.”
*Chirrp?*
“Based on your bright green color, how does Lime sound to you?” Sophia smiled at the parakeet once more. “It comes with cute extra versions like Limes or Limey, too.”
*ChirrpChirrpChirrp* Obviously being delighted by being named by her, Lime happily flapped its wings in response while also bopping up and down its head.
“I’m glad you like it!” Sophia was happy that her name was approved. “By the way, are you a girl or a boy?” She looked at Lime for a little bit. “I probably should’ve asked about that beforehand, but I’d say the name works for both, anyway. One chirp for boy, and two chirps for girl. Three if it’s both, neither, or something else entirely.”
*ChirrpChirrp*She quickly replied with two chirps.
“Alright!” Sophia clapped her hands. “Good, too, because now that it’s official, I’d argue that Lime works better for a girl~.”
*Chirrp~!* The green parakeet seemed to agree with that.
“Hmm…” The blonde then changed her attention to Blu. “Now that I think about it, we never clarified what you are. Sorry about that! So, same rules, one chirp for boy, two for girl, or three if we should go into detail.”
*Chirp!* Blu immediately raised his left wing while replying with a single chirp.
“Okay~!” Sophia smiled while giving him a thumbs-up. “So, with that taken care of, Lime, I'm sure Blu has already given you a little tour, but once I'm fully okay again, which feels to be tomorrow or the day after, I'm showing you all of my domain, okay?"
*Chirrp!!* It seemed like she liked the idea.
“Perfect~.” The blonde petted the energetic-looking bird’s head before doing the same with Blu for good measure. “Hmm?” She then heard a knock on the door. “Yes?”
“Hey.” A certain teal-colored fox with a few extra tails entered the room. "Your concerned girlfriend and my at least equally concerned daughter got me to check up on you because they told me you’re sick. Which is unlikely, but now that I’m here, see some stuff and feel even more concerning things, I have q-u-e-s-t-i-o-n-s~.”
"Hello~." Sophia smiled at Mira and waved. "Don't worry, I just overexerted myself a little. I’m feeling a lot better already!”
“That is good to hear. However,” She then walked over to the green bird still sitting on the tiger’s knee and gave it a quick pat before doing the same with Blu. “Is this what I think it is?”
“This is Lime!”
*Chirrp~* The parakeet lifted her wing again.
“Nice to meet you.” Mira smiled at her before facing Sophia. “Why is she about as strong as Blu?”
“She’s slightly stronger than Blu~.” The tiger sounded extra smug.
*Chirrp~.” So did Lime.
*Chirp!* Blu did not like that, though.
"Yes, by around 1 or maybe 2%." The overseer rolled her eyes.
"That's an important 1 or 2%.”
“How were you able to create your own living being?” Mira cut to the case at hand.
“I collected raw magic inside my domain for the last couple of months because I wanted to create a friend for Blu, and here we are~.”
“And you just went ahead and turned it into Lime?”
“Not just, it was quite a bit of work.” Sophia shook her head. "I also had a good long chat with magic itself to figure out how to do it, among some other things, beforehand."
“Haa…” The overseer hung her head. “And they simply told you? They’re already getting cozy in your domain, huh?”
“To be fair, the particles tried to warn me a lot, including telling me like 27 times that it’s going to hurt.” She made a short pause. “Spoiler alert: It did. A lot. I’ve never been in so much pain before! Like, it wasn’t even close to anything I’ve ever experienced!”
“Well, seems like they’re still slightly behaving, huh?” Mira seemed a little relieved before continuing. “Also, no kidding!” Mira raised her voice. “You did something even I thought wasn’t possible yet! You skipped like five to ten years of natural progression!”
“Magic said something similar, yes.” The blonde nodded a few times.
“And you still went ahead with it?”
“Sure~.”
“You’re lucky that you’re you.” The overseer suddenly turned a bit more serious. “Every normal being, even all of your friends, would’ve simply ceased to exist when doing what you did. Aside from the part where magic wouldn't have let them, of course."
“I’m also mostly normal!” Sophia started pouting.
“Sorry, but that claim is now fully over for you.”
“What does that mean?”
“You haven’t noticed anything about your magic yet?”
“Hmm?” The blonde tilted her head. “Well, I passed out and barely had any magic for a couple of days. Now it's finally starting to recover, albeit super slowly for some reason. I guess I got a factory reset from overexerting myself?"
“Not entirely wrong, but you missed the part of what instantly forcing over 1000 times your authority in terms of raw magic through yourself did to your body and forever changed it.”
“Huh?!” Sophia became a little paler. “But magic told me there would be no lasting damage?!”
“Because, strictly speaking, it’s not exactly damage. At least not in a negative sense.”
“Okay…?” She got confused.
"Your magic had to completely realign itself to adapt to the new conditions. That's why you were basically unable to use it for the past couple of days. Right now, you’re in the recovery phase again because your authority has barely finished arranging itself to the new parameters.”
“What exactly changed, though?” Sophia still felt like she was missing something. “Also, how does all of that relate to my recovery being so slow right now?”
“Part of it is because it has to get used to the monumental changes." Mira added yet another slight pause. "However, the more important part is that because you forced so much magic through such a small vessel, you, it left a lasting mark. Long story short, your authority slightly increased in the process.”
“So that’s why magic came up with the big object through a small hole analogy when trying to explain it to me, huh?” The tiger finally connected the dots. “Wait, how much stronger are we talking if it affects my regeneration?”
“You have about 52 times the authority that you had last week." Mira tried to make it sound as dry and matter-of-fact as possible.
“H-HUH?!” Naturally, Sophia got a little surprised by that.
Once she heard that, the tiger needed a little break because it was way too much to take in at once. Especially because she was still recovering and already felt weak before hearing that.
