Chapter 283 – Stuff

The girls, and Fen, were still walking through the monster country to find a griffin and the demon ruins. As usual, they spent most of their time walking by chatting and bickering with each other while making even more plans on what to do once they leave the continent.

“Ohh, things are starting to change!” The group had spent the last few days in the monotone wastelands that are the outskirts of the monster country when Steph energetically clapped her hands while looking at the scenery in front of them.

“That marks the start of the middle layer.” Aura looked at the dog-girl before gesturing towards the massive, multiple-kilometer-wide ravine cutting through the land that spanned so far that they couldn’t see where it started or ended. “Besides a small patch a couple of kilometers to the north, it spans all the way around, and the real monster country begins on the other side, as most of the monsters reside there.”

“This is also where most adventurers who value their lives draw the line," Maya added some slight additional information.

“Ohh!” Steph liked what she was hearing.

“Hmm?” Sophia tilted her head. “Fenny and I never crossed any ravine this side. Fen, have we never been really inside the deeper parts? We’ve been traveling in the wastelands for quite a while, though?”

“That’s where the small patch of not-ravine Aura mentioned comes into play.” The male wolf shook his head. “We were on the border to the inner layer, but we took the land bridge before picking up your cat.”

“Ahh, I see!”

“Is there a cause or reason for this massive ravine?” Steph looked around some more. “Like some sort of destruction or earth movement?”

“No idea.” Fen shook his head.

“It’s been like this since at least the first time I’ve been here.” Aura agreed with him. “The entirety of the inner layer is on a massive plateau, too. Geographically, it’s certainly curious, but I don’t think anyone knows why.”

“Too bad!” She looked a little disappointed. “Well, a mystery is fine, too!” It takes more than this to sour her mood. “Anyway, let’s go!”

“How do we go, though?” Ari pointed at the ravine in front of them. “That thing is kind of in the way.”

“Jump?” Sophia tilted her head.

“Sounds like a plan to me!” Steph liked the idea.

“It’s indeed a plan.” Maya nodded a few times. "A horrible one, that is. Why do you two always want to throw yourself off cliffs?!”

“Because it’s the quickest and easiest way to get down.”

“And it’s fun!” Sophia and Steph were on the same page.

“Not this again!” Ari rolled her eyes. “Why are you two like this?”

“Why aren’t you like this?” The dog-girl threw the question back at her.

“Exactly!” The blonde nodded along.

“Because I’m not insane?” She didn’t understand why this was even a question.

“How sure are you about that?” Anna smirked at her.

“You out of everyone?!” The jaguar got betrayed by her own girlfriend. “I’m, at the very least, the least insane one here!”

“Fair.” The princess couldn’t argue with that.

“In the first place, how is jumping down that going to work?” Ari pointed down the massive ravine as they had gotten close to the edge. “Sure, it’s a big drop, but now that I got a better look at it, it’s not a steep one.” It was far from a 90-degree angle and seemed walkable for the most part, though it required some weaving back and forth. In fact, parts at the bottom of the ravine to their left looked more like a valley, with much more greenery, and even grass and some trees could be seen. “Jumping wouldn’t do a whole lot here.”

“That entirely depends on how much of a run-up you do.” Steph smiled at her. “I’m sure I could get to the bottom in one go.”

“Easily.” The two wolves nodded along.

“See?” The jaguar looked at her princess again. “They’re crazy! Or, do you think you could jump all the way to the bottom, as well?”

“I think I could make it all the way down in one go.” Anna looked a little awkward. “I don’t think I’d enjoy it, though. After all, I’d be able to jump a couple of meters, fall down, and then tumble the rest of the way.”

“That’s not exactly what I meant.” She lightly shook her head. “That’s not making it, that’s failing to make it.”

“Does this ravine have any sort of influence on the monster or wildlife?” Sophia ignored the duo and looked at the wolves instead. “You mentioned that this place is divided into layers, so does it act as a barrier they can’t cross?”

“Not really, no.” Fen shook his head.

“No.” Aura agreed with him. “In fact, if you paid attention to your detection magic, you could’ve seen how a bunch of them fled across the ravine to get away from our group.”

“Ah, I’ve been ignoring everything that isn’t giving off at least half the authority of Anna and Ari, so I guess it was mostly baby monsters?”

“Compared to even our weakest friends here, almost all of the monsters are babies except maybe the griffins and some golems.” Aura agreed with him. “Anyway, no, the ravine doesn’t even really slow down the monsters.”

“So that means nothing detrimental would happen if I do a little terraforming in this area, right?” Sophia started smirking. “To make sure the princess by blood doesn’t fall and tumble, and the princess by character stops complaining.” She looked at Ari during the end.

“…” She had nothing to say in her defense.

“While I’m not sure what you’re up to, but no, the ravine has no meaning besides it being a landmark to mark the inner layer.” The female wolf nodded a few times. “In fact, I’m curious now, so please go ahead.”

“Perfect~.” Sophia energetically clapped her hands before walking to the very edge of the ravine. “Alrighty, seems like the coast is clear.” She looked down for a moment before closing her eyes. Then, a few seconds later, an enormous portal appeared that stretched all the way to the bottom of the ravine and even reached the other side over three kilometers away. It was accompanied by an incredible rumble so strong that the ground under them started shaking like during an earthquake. However, all of this was over in an instant again, as well.

“HUH?!” Everyone had the same reaction when their eyes fell on what the blonde had just done.

“Let’s get going~.” Enjoying the looks on their faces for a second, Sophia then stepped on the massive dirt dam that filled the entire ravine all the way to the other side. “I hope you’re fine with dirt to get to the other side, princess.” Smirking at Ari, Sophia then started walking towards the other side on her makeshift bridge.

----------------

“Where did all this dirt come from?!” The wolves and Steph were the first to catch up with her when the dog-girl energetically circled around her.

“I dumped one of my unused starter biomes from my domain through the portal.” Sophia gave her a thumbs-up.

“I didn’t know you could make portals that big!” She got even more excited. “You could easily swallow a whole city with that!”

“Well, it’s convenient that we’re headed to an abandoned demon city, huh?”

“You’re going to borrow that for your domain?!” Steph only got louder.

“I mean, it’s not like the demons are still using it, right?” She just let out a small chuckle.

“You’re the absolute best sister there is!” The dog-girl was incredibly proud of her.

“How much of your authority did you use to create this massive portal?” Aura was more interested in the technical aspect. “I was so distracted by what was happening that I didn’t pay attention to it, and you recover your authority so fast that it's nearly impossible to tell in the first place."

“That’s a good question.” Sophia shrugged in response before lifting her hair to reveal a small portal attached to the base of her neck. “I’m constantly connected to my domain with magic flowing both sides. On top of that, I’m pouring about 100 times my magic power into my domain a day as fast as my authority regenerates, so I can’t really judge anymore how much magic something takes when I use it here.”

“Wait, I just noticed that you don’t have the tiny portal attached to your tail anymore!” Her little sister focused on the least important bit here.

"Yeah, I noticed that the tiny portal had a bit of a throughput issue, and when I tried making it bigger, it threw off my balance when it was attached to the tip of my tail, so I relocated it to somewhere else it isn’t in the way and inconspicuous, thanks to my fluffy hair.”

“Did you just say a hundred times your authority a day?!” The female wolf also got loud.

“Yup.” She just smiled at her.

“No wonder your detectable authority is going through the roof!”

“Well, I’m trying to grow as fast as possible, so that’s great to hear~.”

“What are you doing with all that magic in your domain?!” Fen also joined the conversation.

“Stuff~.” The blonde’s expression turned even more cheeky. "A wide-area sky spanning over every biome is one of the goals, but there's something else I want to do, and I think I just have enough saved up for it.”

“And what would that be?” The male wolf was curious.

“Nope, that’s a secret~.” She only put a finger on her lips.

“That’s no fun!” Steph started pouting when she heard that. “Tell meeee~!”

“Nuh-uh.”

“You’re the absolute worst sister!” The dog-girl had completely changed her earlier opinion of her. “I hate secrets!”

“It’s not a secret, it’s a surprise in the making~.” Sophia looked incredibly smug. “Also, on an unrelated note, I might need like half a day off tomorrow to do something.”

“I hate you so much!” That only made it worse for her.

“Let’s get going!” The blonde happily clapped her hands as she continued to walk towards the other side of the ravine on top of her bridge.

Steph pouted and complained for a good while longer, but everyone eventually made it to the middle layer of the monster country, even Ari, Anna, and Maya, who were still slightly perplexed about what had happened.
