Chapter 232 - 231: A Huge Noise
She had become numb with despair.
’It would be better to die,’ she thought. ’Death would be a release, and living wouldn’t be so exhausting.’
But she couldn’t accept it!
The bitter memories of all these years replayed in her mind—the repeated setbacks, the constant humiliation, the endless compromises she was forced to make.
But after all this time, her love had failed to warm his heart of stone.
He had said he would come save her, and she had firmly believed him, but what was the point in lying to herself?
She was going to die, abandoned by her husband. She had loved him her entire life, only to be cast aside without a moment’s hesitation.
At that moment, Annabelle Linton wondered, ’If his gaze hadn’t been so resolute, if there had been just a flicker of hesitation, would my heart have hurt this much?’
Her heart ached because he had abandoned her, and it ached because she could no longer find any excuses for him. She had truly been cast aside.
She began to weep in despair.
Just as she was succumbing to hopelessness, her face ashen and her will to live gone, a figure ran into her line of sight, shouting her name with all his might, "Annabelle Linton! Annabelle Linton, where are you!"
She could barely believe her ears. "Aaron... Wyatt?"
Hearing her voice, Aaron Wyatt whipped his head around.
Their eyes met, separated by the raging inferno.
Without a second’s hesitation, he plunged into the sea of fire to save her. When a flaming beam fell toward her, he shielded her with his own hand, which was severely burned as a result.
After a harrowing ordeal, they finally escaped the inferno.
They clung to each other, weeping, but Leona Grant, who had rushed back, saw it all.
She would never forget the look of mockery and derision in his eyes.
And so, just like that, he walked away...
If not for Aaron Wyatt, she would have died. Yet in that critical moment, Leona Grant wasn’t thinking about her life being in danger, but about his own dignity as her husband.
But the most pathetic part was that she still couldn’t let him go. She ran after him to explain, hurting Aaron Wyatt in the process.
That was why now, whenever Leona Grant accused her of having an affair with Aaron Wyatt, she would grow furious but refuse to explain.
Annabelle Linton lowered her eyes, her unfocused gaze resting on the gleaming black and white piano keys. Her expression was placid, and though the corner of her mouth curled slightly, it was clearly not a smile.
She seemed to be shrouded in a thin mist, making her unreadable.
"Annabelle? Annabelle?" Xylas Shepherd called out twice when she didn’t respond.
Annabelle snapped back to reality. Her face remained impassive, but she lifted her gaze and forced a smile to hide her distracted state. "I was just really into the song."
"Oh... okay." Xylas Shepherd clearly didn’t believe her. He then asked, "Want to keep going?"
Annabelle gave a faint smile. "No, I’m done. You guys go on. I’m a little tired."
With that, she returned to her room, her expression blank.
Leona Grant’s deep-set eyes scrutinized Annabelle’s retreating back, his thoughts unreadable.
He had clearly seen the coldness and mockery in Annabelle’s eyes just now, but he didn’t know why she would wear such an expression.
It was a look of self-mockery, heartbreak, sorrow, regret, and resentment.
’I don’t recall doing anything to provoke her,’ he thought.
And yet, Leona Grant had the distinct feeling that her trance-like state had something to do with him.
He didn’t know why, but ever since Annabelle had woken up, she had become not only colder, but would also frequently wear this complex, unreadable expression.
Leona Grant didn’t think this was normal at all. ’It seems... I’ll have to investigate this when we get back.’
With that thought, Leona Grant also returned to his room, looking pensive.
Xylas Shepherd and Nathaniel Locke were left completely exasperated.
’This couple...’ they thought. ’Do they have to be so alike?’
BOOM!
Annabelle had just sat down on the bed when the plane suddenly let out a massive roar and began to shake violently, throwing her to the floor.
Then, alarms began to blare throughout the entire cabin—
