Chapter 206: The Cost Of Staying Human
The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been.
Zane was something like that as well.
He was appointed as a leader and for the most part he did a good job.
He had his heart in the right place but this heart was the very same reason that he felt things after killing someone for the first time in his life.
This heart was the very same reason that made him sit in silence with no expressions, staring at the severed head.
And this heart was the very same reason that forced Jammy to say something chilling and sharper than blade.
Jammy wasn’t happy with Zane’s current behavior. And if he kept acting like this after every kill in this journey and his conquest then one thing was clear.
"You are not fit to be a Leader. Especially mine."
Jammy dropped some big words and Zane was forced to flinch and look up at the Janitor.
Xavier gritted his teeth.
Draxus said nothing and Hena watched Zane closely seeing his next reactions.
Zane stood from the floor and looked at Jammy.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
Jammy didn’t back down. "Dead bodies will pile up. You can’t help it. If you won’t kill, then someone else will. Death is not something you can run away from. Keep your heart kind and get yourself killed. I don’t give a damn. But the people who sided with you see hope in you, for them you have to stay alive even if it means you have to get blood on your hands. If you can’t do that, then you are not suited to be a leader. That’s what I meant."
Jammy said all that in one breath, without any fear and stuttering.
Zane heard it and keeping his eyes on Jammy for a few seconds, he sighed.
"I am not sad at his death. Don’t get me wrong."
Jammy raised one brow. "Then?"
Zane glanced at the head.
"I fear becoming a murderer. My hand moved on its own as if I had no regard for human life. As if killing was the natural move. The Discipline Sentinels had moved their hands just like this when they killed my mother and father.
I don’t want to become someone like that. My weapon should rise only for the ones who had raised their weapons as well. I want to kill people for their sins, not for their existence."
Zane went silent as all eyes watched the young man.
But Jammy, the man ended up laughing.
"That’s it?"
He shook his head.
"What?" Zane asked.
"Kid, your hand moved because it sensed danger. It’s like a deer running after seeing a lion. It doesn’t stop to think about why it did that. It just runs. You killing that man is the same. You felt danger, you attacked. That’s what Humans are. Don’t call yourself a monster for doing something natural. You killed no innocent man. If you hadn’t killed him and then it would be him who would have killed an innocent man—you. Understand?"
Zane lost his words.
Jammy put it in a way that even a stupid bum could understand. He would make a butcher justify butchering his entire family.
But Zane wasn’t a butcher. He was less than that.
If he let go of his notions, Jammy’s words were correct.
The world doesn’t stop to think when it’s on fire.
Zane killed the man because that was what anyone else with a survival instinct would have done.
"I understand." Zane said.
Jammy smiled.
"That’s all then. Let’s finish our work. You all go search while I take care of the dead bodies."
"Can you do it?" Xavier asked.
Jammy turned to him.
"Did you forget who I am?"
"I never knew who you were in the first place."
Jammy flinched but ignoring the anger, he replied:
"I am a janitor."
"... Why are you saying it like you work for a Crown?"
Jammy clenched his fists.
"Alright. We have to take care of four dead bodies now."
Jammy walked towards Xavier.
Xavier took a fighting stance. The man wasn’t afraid of anything.
"Stop it." Zane said.
Jammy stopped.
Xavier returned to his normal stance.
Zane pressed his forehead.
"Clear the dead bodies. Yes. He can clear it, Xavier. He is a janitor. It is not a small job. He works hard. Let’s not belittle each other."
"I was not belittling him. It’s just he called himself a janitor with pride as if he was friends with a Crown or something."
"Heh. If I told you who I am friends with, you would piss your pants." Jammy retorted.
"Yeah? Who? The senior Janitor?"
"Enough, Xavier. It’s already late as it is. And I am not even sure if we will find anything worthwhile here. Stop fighting."
Zane shook his head and slowly found the stairs and sat on it.
He went silent and all of them sensed the fatigue in his voice.
They stopped talking and Jammy prepared the dead bodies.
"Hey, flower boy. Help me." He said.
Tesla looked left and right.
"Me?"
"Who else looks like a flower boy here?"
"Er.. I am sorry but I can’t help you." Tesla refused.
Jammy’s jaw tightened.
"Why?"
Tesla licked his lips. "I am not good with blood. So, I am sorry."
Bowing his head, Tesla refused with respect and Jammy heavily sighed.
"Cowards."
"I- I.. will help you." Xavier said.
Jammy eyed the man in the glow of his lighter.
"You sure?" He asked. "You won’t feel little helping a janitor?"
Xavier rolled his eyes.
"Come on, man. I am sorry, alright?"
"Hmm."
Jammy only said that and allowed Xavier to help him anyway.
"How will we do it?" Xavier asked.
"Find some bags. Any size. As many as you can. We will mince the body and keep it there."
"That would take a lot of time. And how can I find bags in this darkness."
"It is what it is."
"No." Zane interrupted. "Leave it."
Jammy blinked. "What?"
Zane sighed.
He patted his clothes.
Wiped the blood from his face and in his usual voice, he repeated what he said.
"Leave the dead bodies here. I don’t care anymore."
