Chapter 71: He Entered, Bot Not As One Of Them
In case of news, we should always wait for the sacrament of confirmation.
Hena’s bodyguard had stopped entering the Citadel as soon as he saw Zane.
Hena had also stopped and Zane didn’t know where she was looking as his head was down.
His heart was at its wits end, worried about what the bodyguard wanted.
He believed the man would carry on walking soon but turned out, the man wanted something from Zane.
A confirmation.
For what?
Zane didn’t understand but the bodyguard had asked Zane to look at him.
Milo was with him and if he rebelled right now, it might birth problems.
So he did what he was asked.
He looked up.
But he only looked at the bodyguard, not at the girl behind the bodyguard.
The bodyguard also stared at Zane with narrowed eyes and then he nodded.
"Yes. You are the same one from yesterday. I am surprised you are still alive."
Zane heaved a sigh of relief.
The bodyguard only wanted to see if Zane was the same person whom he saved yesterday.
Zane slightly bowed his head.
"I wasn’t able to say it yesterday out of fear but now I can. Thank you for saving me."
The bodyguard waved his hand.
"Like I said, it wasn’t me. It was my lady who asked me to stop the Enforcer. Thank her."
Zane didn’t argue and now looked at Hena.
"Thank you."
"Let’s go. I thought you stopped for something important." Hena spoke and with one little glance at Zane, she entered the Citadel.
The bodyguard followed behind her and Zane noticed the man had two swords with their sheaths tied to his waist and upon entering, he handed one of them to Hena.
I also want a weapon.
Zane didn’t even mind the rude manner of Hena. Considering what he got from the Halocrats, she was the nicest as of now.
But as they left, Zane had to face something else now.
The bodyguard said some things and Milo was right there.
She heard all of that.
"What did that person mean, brother? Were you in trouble yesterday? What did he mean by you are still alive?" Milo asked, her voice filled with fear.
Zane looked at her and forced a smile.
"That guy mistook me for someone else, Milo. I didn’t argue with him. That’s all. Let’s just go inside and see our new room. Okay?"
"... Okay."
Milo believed her brother and they finally reached in front of the gate.
Above the gate, in golden letters, was embedded Halocrats’ batch.
They keep worshipping themselves.
Behind the gate, Zane saw the scenery and it looked normal.
Trees and buildings were present and very few people were roaming inside.
He also didn’t see Hena and the bodyguard who just entered a few seconds ago.
Nevertheless, Zane would know about it more once he enters as well.
Two Enforcers were also here at this gate and as soon as Zane came in front of the gate, they became active.
Also, Zane was glad that it wasn’t the Discipline Sentinels who guarded this gate.
Milo would go through another episode of hers if she saw as much as their shadow.
They didn’t approach Zane but their eyes stayed on him.
They had broadswords on their hands and with a deep breath, Zane stepped forward.
He waited for the guards to stop him midway but only after he was one step away from entering, did two swords come in front of him from both his sides.
Zane gulped and looked at one of the Enforcers.
He gripped Milo’s hand tightly and placed her behind himself again.
He didn’t speak first as he would let the men in power start the talk.
And they did.
"Are you Zane Atlas?"
Zane didn’t waste time.
"Yes."
He answered only what was asked.
"We have been informed one Gutterborn would come from here. You have something to show?" One Enforcer asked.
Zane understood what the guard meant. The guard didn’t ask for the relic directly. If an impostor would have come instead of Zane then that impostor would not be able to understand what the guard was asking for and he would be caught.
Fortunately, Zane wasn’t an impostor and he didn’t make the mistake of asking the guard what he was asking for to show.
He held Milo’s hand with his left hand that also held the plastic bag and then with his right hand, he shoved his hand inside his pants pocket.
He had made sure his pocket had what was needed as from his hut to this gate, he had constantly checked if he had the relic or not.
Therefore, nothing stressful happened and Zane took out the Relic from his pocket.
He frowned seeing it as it wasn’t glowing like yesterday and it also wasn’t that much warm.
This assured him that the relic was related to the sun as the sun hadn’t come out fully yet.
He reached out the relic to one Enforcer and the Enforcer stared at it with full intent.
"Give it to me." He said.
"Take it." Zane replied.
The Enforcer shook his head and showed his palm to Zane.
"Place it here. I want no skin contact."
Milo shivered at the words and the voice of the Enforcer. She regretted not finding a hole and hiding inside it.
Zane felt her tremble so he decided to end it fast.
The Enforcer did not want to touch a Gutterborn and it was too early for Zane to bring revolution.
So he simply placed the Relic on the Enforcer’s palm and let the guard inspect it however he wanted to.
The guard looked over the coin with both sides and nodded.
Then he passed the coin to the other Enforcer and this guard did the same.
"It looks alright. I haven’t seen one of these forever. Too bad it lost its charm being with one of you. Anyway, you may go."
The Enforcer tossed the coin at Zane and Zane caught it with utmost care.
He again stored it inside his pocket and the guards removed their swords from Zane’s way.
Zane held Milo’s hand with his right hand again and while exhaling and inhaling all the air he could...
He finally stepped inside the Citadel.
