Conflux System: I Can Merge Anything

Chapter 70: Look At Me — If You Dare

All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.

For now, Zane had reached his destination.

He had taken the carriage to save time and seeing the flame tower from the window of the carriage, it was still some minutes away from reaching VI.

So he arrived on time before the church bells could ring.

Zane opened his eyes, took a deep breath and stood up.

"Let’s go, Milo."

The little girl stood up and held Zane’s finger.

Zane held the black plastic bag on his right hand, the same hand whose finger Milo held.

His left hand wasn’t free at the moment but it would be soon.

The driver opened the door of the carriage as Zane and Milo stepped out of it.

The driver closed the door again and spread his palm.

"Twenty Bronze. I want no drama."

Zane nodded and gave all the coins he was holding on his left palm.

The driver took them and Zane started walking.

"Wait here. Let me count first."

Zane sighed and waited.

The driver counted each one of them, carefully checking if they were real.

"I am not a cheater, good sir." Zane said.

The driver smiled. "I know. But they call your kind the descendents of a thief. Can’t risk it."

Zane stopped talking.

There was no point in arguing. The stigma ran deep and fighting over it with a mere carriage driver would not prove any result.

Zane shifted the black plastic bag from his right hand to his left and after one minute, the carriage driver finished checking all the Lumens.

They were wet with the sweat of Zane’s palm but the driver didn’t seem to mind that and stored the coin in his leather pouch that was hidden inside his pants.

"Alright. Have a good day, kid." The driver sat back on his seat and turned around the carriage.

Zane didn’t spare him any glance and stared at the huge metallic gate in front of him.

Two Enforcers were standing on the either side of the gates and above the gate, in capital letters, it was written:

COMMONERS’ BATCH.

So it isn’t for me.

The Enforcers standing beside the gates didn’t register Zane and simply kept their eyes in the front.

Xavier would enter from here if he comes today. I should find my gate. Should I ask them?

Zane thought but he decided to look for the Holocrats batch himself first.

He was also afraid of the two Enforcers that he had met and engaged with yesterday.

One wanted to shove his baton in Zane’s mouth whose name was Kairon with a bird shaped scar above his eyes and Zane had straight up taken a fight with another one when the system took control of him.

If those two saw Zane, Kairon might let it go but the second Enforcer would surely want his revenge.

Let’s just hope I don’t meet them.

Zane looked left and right and to his right, a few meters away, people were entering from somewhere and they were shining.

As soon as Zane saw the shine, he understood where he had to go.

They were the Halocrats.

"We have to go there, Milo. This is not our gate."

Milo nodded.

Not once did she raise her head as the Enforcers were wearing uniforms and the trauma in her heart, won’t give her strength to look at them.

Zane and Milo walked towards the other gate on the right and in a few minutes, they reached near it.

Zane looked around before coming in front of the gate as he wanted to see the reactions and assess the situation.

The Halocrats were entering with their assistants and friends and all of them had wrinkled their noses seeing Zane and Milo.

Zane was glad that Milo had her head down as she wouldn’t have been able to handle the mockery and disgust people give looking at her, especially her brother.

He waited for all the Halocrats to enter as he didn’t want to come in their way so they could find an excuse to harm him.

He also kept his gaze down as the gilded trash might get offended if a filth looked them in the eye.

Zane would not let Milo get hurt because of his pride. He would swallow it with grace if it meant no harm falling on her.

Soon, the Halocrats stopped coming and Zane looked at the road to see if more were coming.

Unfortunately, he saw two more people.

And Zane lowered his gaze again.

He knew those people.

They were the same people who interfered when Kairon was humiliating Zane.

The black haired girl and her bodyguard.

If I remember, her name was...

Zane tried to recall and he was successful.

Hena Myreth. She had awakened an Aurora tier skill.

He heard their footsteps reaching towards the gate and Zane took a step back as well.

The footsteps approached closer and Zane slightly raised his head to look.

He frowned seeing her as she wasn’t shining.

Hena wore simple clothes.

A black top hugged her upper body and black pants that looked comfortable.

His eyes couldn’t help but notice the feminine features of the girl but as soon as he saw her bodyguard, he lowered his gaze again.

Zane waited for them to enter but his heart sank the moment he heard the sound of footsteps stopping.

And they had stopped in front of him.

Did he see me looking at her? I had no bad intentions.

His heartbeat picked up pace as he pushed Milo to hide behind him.

Zane felt the gaze of the bodyguard on him but he kept his head down.

If he stayed like this, they would lose interest and carry on walking.

He was a gutterborn. They wouldn’t spare their time on him anyway.

As soon as they would enter, Zane would enter as well and run.

I was glad that those two Enforcers weren’t guarding here but fate doesn’t like my relief.

Zane kept his patience and silence and he was sure that it would be over in a few seconds soon.

However, he underestimated his luck.

"Hey, you." The bodyguard spoke and Zane flinched.

He stayed silent but the sharp voice of the bodyguard sliced through his calmness.

"Look at me. I want a confirmation."
