Chapter 647: Mighty Mother (3)
This was the first time Winter Sullivan had ever heard anything like that, and she couldn’t help but laugh. "That’s an interesting way to put it!"
Vera Xavier smiled. Knowing Winter Sullivan still had to deal with Susan Caldwell, she said goodbye with a smile and strode away.
The moment Vera Xavier left, Winter Sullivan’s face grew cold. She turned her head and shot Susan Caldwell a frosty glare. Susan’s face paled a few shades, and she said softly, "Mom, I admit I was wrong about what happened in the school cafeteria. But you just saw it yourself—Vera Xavier is a petty and vindictive person..."
"If someone tried to kill me, I’d hold a grudge too," Winter Sullivan retorted before turning to leave.
Susan Caldwell’s expression turned even uglier. Sheldon Caldwell, however, was stunned. ’Susan tried to kill Vera before? No way!’
He couldn’t help but ask, "Mom, what’s going on?"
"Why don’t you ask your ’dear’ sister," Winter Sullivan said coldly, then walked straight out.
Seeing that things were going south, Susan Caldwell tried to slip away after they went outside, but Winter Sullivan called out to her. "Come home with me. I have some questions for you."
Susan Caldwell bit her lip, but ultimately, she didn’t dare defy Winter Sullivan. Her palms were already slick with sweat.
Sheldon Caldwell was still the one driving on the way back to the Caldwell residence. He was still thinking about what Winter Sullivan had said—that Susan Caldwell had once tried to kill Vera Xavier. The thought shook him to the core. He knew how much Nathaniel Nathan treasured Vera; if anything had actually happened to her, Nathaniel’s personality was such that he would have likely stormed the Caldwell Family’s home and chopped Susan to pieces with his own hands.
He recalled Vera Xavier’s earlier warning and realized that even though Susan Caldwell had wanted to kill her, Vera had never said a single word about it to him.
And here he’d always thought that while Susan Caldwell was a bit vain and they weren’t particularly close, she was still obedient and kind. He never expected she could harbor such venomous thoughts.
Winter Sullivan was silent the entire ride. Not knowing how much her mother knew, Susan Caldwell didn’t dare speak either, afraid that the more she said, the more she’d get wrong.
The atmosphere in the car was oppressive, and it remained that way until they got out.
After getting out of the car, Susan Caldwell seemed to have figured out a way to handle the situation. She said softly, "Mom, it’s really not like what Vera Xavier said. I admit I did some things wrong, but I never, ever thought about taking her life..."
She kept whispering in Winter Sullivan’s ear, but Winter’s face remained cold and she said nothing the entire time.
When they reached the entrance to the Caldwell house, a young bodyguard was standing there. Upon seeing Winter Sullivan, he gave a standard salute and said, "Professor Sullivan, the files are all here. Please review them."
Winter Sullivan took the files, nodded, and said, "Thank you. I appreciate your work."
The bodyguard saluted again and then left.
Meanwhile, Susan Caldwell continued in a soft voice, "Mom, I’m your daughter. Don’t you know what kind of person I am? You’ve only met Vera Xavier twice; you don’t even know what she’s really like. How can you believe her over me?"
By this point, she sounded aggrieved, and tears welled up in her eyes.
Winter Sullivan didn’t look at her, instead flipping through the documents in her hand.
Sheldon Caldwell took out his keys and opened the door. When Susan Caldwell saw Winter Sullivan looking at the files, she didn’t think much of it. After all, her mother was a massive workaholic who often brought her work home.
