Chapter 258 – At the Office’s Door
Up a flight of stairs, chunky footsteps behind them.
“So many stupid robots…” Said Carol looking down over her shoulder. “Damn you, Miyuki! How could you not know about this?!”
“It does seem like the kind of detail that could make or break the plan.” Ririna said.
“Then she’s gonna look us in the face and say things were fated to work out in the end anyway. Maybe, but not thanks to you!”
Running up the stairs wasn’t doing a lot to shake off the robots. It was a contest of speed. Who could run up the stairs first? Them, or some overpowered robots? Maybe it wouldn’t make much of a difference, but Katja, up front, ran out into one of the floors. There’s another set of stairs on the other side, so maybe they could lose the robots by turning a few corners.
“No, this isn’t Miyuki’s fault…” Katja said. “If we think about it logically, the robots don’t matter. As long as we can get to my grandfather’s office, we win.”
“I don’t know if I like that or if it only pisses me off more. If we were going to get chased by a bunch of murderous machines, I would have liked to know ahead of time.”
“What can you do?” Sarasa shrugged. “Haven’t you heard? Life’s a bitch.”
That was letting Miyuki off too lightly.
Hecate shook her head. “Actually, it’s what we make of it. If we focus on our goal like Katja suggested, we’ll be fine. Just keep running.”
The girls cut through the whole floor in less than a minute. The path they took from one staircase to the other was the farthest possible from a straight shot, and it actually worked to their advantage. The footsteps behind them grew distant. Massive head start going into the next staircase.
“Nya?! Wait!”
A sword swung down and cracked the floor in front of them. If not for Sarasa slowing down the group, someone would have gotten hurt.
“How are they here already?” Carol asked.
“That’s not it. This is a different group…” Katja analyzed the 5 robots in front of them. “They’re guarding the staircase. We’ll have to force our way through.”
“If it’s only this many…”
Carol made the first move and locked blades with the robot that attacked them. He was strong enough to hold her back with all her strength. Even if he weren’t, his armor would just bounce off Carol’s blade. “This many we can handle!” But from how close she was, the tiny crevasses of the armor were all visible. Unlike the spherical tank, the humanoid robots had joints and gaps. They were tiny, yes, but she had the ability to create a blade as thin as she wanted on the other hand and pushed it through one of those gaps. “Die!”
The materialized blade pierced the robot’s shoulder and destabilized it. With a swing from the other arm, she pushed against his blade and knocked the robot on the floor.
“There!” But that was only until Hecate stepped in and crushed his skull under her heel. The sturdy armor was helpless against the raw strength of a vampire. “One down, four to go. Back me up.”
She immediately went after the next target. Scythe met sword, but she had the strength to knock it away. “Carol!” Created the perfect opening.
“Daisuke wasn’t kidding.” Katja engaged one of the robots at the same time. “Their individual strength is actually comparable to the tank.” She and the robot exchanged blows. Hitting each other’s weapons over and over. “But without their numbers, they’re nothing!” Her next two swings scrapped her legs, then two red slices finished the fight. The robot’s sword broke with one, then his torso shattered.
“What do you mean ‘they’re nothing?!’ Speak for yourself!” The unlucky one in the face of the robots was Sarasa. She had no choice but to dance whatever dance the robots forced on her through the swings of their swords.
Her cries for help were completely ignored. Oh well… No other choice but to lead the blender over to the girl fiddling with vials and corks. “…” The robot didn’t notice Ririna, and Ririna didn’t notice the robot or the girl bending into three different poses every second next to her. “Oh well, let me borrow this for a second.”
“Huh?” She noticed her pouch getting snagged. And the explosion in the robots face the next second. Another one down. “Hey! What do you think you’re doing? I was gonna use that?”
“For what? To help us? I just helped myself with it. Same thing, right?” Ririna complained, but after a sigh, she went back to mixing the two vials she was holding. “What are you doing, anyway?” Sarasa asked.
“Robots hate water and electricity, you know? Watch this.” The vial flashed, then Ririna splashed it on the floor. The clear liquid formed a puddle. A puddle that got up and turned into an eel of water and sparkles. It swam through the air and through the bodies of the robots still functioning while keeping its shape. One after the other, they fell to the floor, twitching. “Huh… That didn’t actually destroy them… Maybe I should have made it stronger.”
“That was you, Ririna?” Katja asked. “Good job… Destroying them doesn’t matter. We can keep going now. To the stairs!”
In the staircase, everything was quiet. No more robots chasing anyone, only their footsteps.
“It’s a straight shot now…” Katja said.
Carol ran next to her. “How are we going to do this? We need proof that your grandfather abused his power. It’s not just going to be laying there waiting for us.”
“It’s fine. We barge in there and look through his stuff until we find the file. Miyuki told us what to look for. He’s not going to interfere if we pin him down.”
“He can’t fight us?”
Katja scoffed. “No shot… When he was young, maybe, but he doesn’t stand a chance against us now. The Kurokawas call themselves guardians, but they have mostly taken on the role of telling others to guard recently. Without the forces they control, they’re nothing.”
“Whew…” Sarasa wiped her brow. “Mission finished then? We left the robots in the dust. No one’s left to oppose us, is there?”
“If we’re fast enough. They’ll catch up if we take too long.”
After a few more floors, Katja pushed open the door. Out was a long, white hallway with a refined wooden floor. The double doors at the other end, made out of the same wine brown wood as the floor, stood before them.
“Th- that’s it, isn’t it?” Carol asked.
“Yeah… Let’s g-”
With a click, six trapdoors in the ceiling suddenly opened. Six of the same robots chasing them jumped down, then another six, and they kept pouring wave after wave.
“Woah woah woah! That’s too many of them!” Carol said.
“This is bad… He can deploy them here directly?”
“Makes sense…” Hecate clutched her rifle. “If this is such an important place, there’s no way it would be left defenseless. What should we do?”
“I- I don’t know…” Katja shook her head. “Miyuki didn’t foresee this… We can’t win against this many… Our only option is to run away, lure them somewhere and then come back. Assuming they even chase us.”
“Run away, huh…” The chunky footsteps had returned. Carol looked over her shoulder as the ones responsible passed through the same door they did. “Tsk… She screwed us!”
“I- is it over?!” Ririna asked. “Can we even do anything?”
“It’s looking more and more like a dead end…” One of the robots from behind stepped forward with a swing. Hecate met him with her scythe and knocked him back. “Katja, any ideas?”
Now she was the one getting attacked on the other side. Katja swung and parried the robot’s attack. “We… We have to… Uhh…” Another attack, another parry. “We have to think of something! Just don’t die! Do whatever it takes!”
“Tsk… Easier said than done…”

House side. Before anything went wrong.
A downswing of my sword cleaved an assault rifle in half. “Whew… Looks like they’re finally running out of guns.” One of the soldiers stared up at me in fear, and for a good reason. My kicks had sent a lot of his buddies flying out of the ring, and he was my latest victim.
“Guaahh!” Very far for a kick, but after clutching his bruises, he got up and ran away.
Narumi was gentler. With her axe resting over her shoulder, she grabbed two soldiers by the head and tapped them against each other. Instant KO. “No more guns, but… they’ve already called in more reinforcements. Look.”
A new wave of fighters walked through the front gate, protected with the fabric for PSF personnel. They carried a large assortment of melee weapons like swords, spears, and shields.
“Ditching the guns for melee weapons is crazy… You’d think they got something backwards, huh?”
“Ahahaha… Most of the time, yes, but their weapons…”
“They’re Matching Weapons, I can tell. Looks like we’ll finally get to have some fun.”
“You played around with the soldiers too much already.” Narumi said. “You’ve been having nothing but fun this whole time.”
“You know what they say. Fun is like money. You can never have too much.”
“Huh huh… And who says that exactly?”
I blinked. “Is that not a quote? Well, if it’s not, then I’m saying it now. Let’s make some money, Narumi!”
“*Sigh…* You mixed them up.”
