What Do You Mean I Have To Comprehend Dao As A Mortal God?

Chapter 276: They’re Still Blaming Us

I dusted my hands and turned back to look at the survivors, "Do you believe me now?"

All of them looked at the dead Anomaly at my feet, then at me.

None of them said a word.

Although... I noticed that the guy with the gun was still glaring at me like he was blaming me for his friend transforming into that.

Honestly, you only have yourselves to blame for this, you know? I’ve already warned you guys multiple times at this point and you guys never listened.

So as much as I can pity you for losing your friend like this... I’m not to blame for it.

Also... I’m just going to say here... I will do my best to help as many people as I can to the best of my ability... But I will not beat myself up over failing to save people who are unwilling to be saved.

You could say that I’m somewhat of an idealist with some understanding of a realist. I am aware of how shitty the world can be, after all.

I turned back to the corridor right as Olivia and the others appeared, looking none the worse for wear.

I wasn’t surprised that they managed to clear out those Anomalies so easily since the ones that were dumped in that room were most likely non-mutants, which meant that they were the weaker Anomalies that my Guardians could easily deal with.

Then again, Olivia could easily take down the larger Anomaly as well so even if there were a few mixed in there with them, it wouldn’t have made a difference to the outcome anyway.

Olivia lowered her head slightly, "My Lord, all of them have been taken care of."

"Good work. Were there any new... Creatures that we have not met before?"

"No, my Lord. They were all variants that we have fought."

The guy who gave us the mission to find his friend stepped forward, "Just... Who are you people? You’re all... Mutants, aren’t you?"

I figured that at this point, we might as well just come clean to them. If they weren’t going to trust us anyway, then we might as well just tell them everything and see how they react before deciding whether we should help them or not.

I nodded at him, "Can I assume that you are the leader of this group?"

He shared a look with his companions before stepping forward, "Yes... I am Ach’tvold. You can call me Ach."

Great, because I actually have no idea how I was supposed to pronounce the last part of his name properly.

I sucked in a breath before speaking, "So... Let’s just start from the very beginning... What do you guys know about these... Monsters?"

Ach looked a little confused at the question like I had just asked him where babies come from.

"They appeared from the Dark Mountain Beyond? Then flooded through the world and swept their way through the lands and savaged the people and land?"

Ok... That’s news... I assume that this ’Dark Mountain Beyond’ is a specific place in this world that everyone here knows about and can recognise it just by its name alone.

That’s why my next question here should be a pretty big hint to them that something was off...

"What’s the Dark Mountain Beyond?"

Sure enough, all of them were looking at me like I just asked them what Mount Everest was.

One of the girls behind Ach frowned at me, "Are you... Stupid? You don’t know what Dark Mountain Beyond is?"

That seemed to have clicked something for Ach because his eyes widened and he lifted a finger to point at me, "You... You’re not... You’re not actually one of us, are you? You’re not... You’re not... You just look like us..."

I gave him a curt nod, "I will tell you what we know... These things are called Anomalies from where we are from... And they appear through portals that lead to other worlds. Most likely, a portal has opened at this Dark Mountain Beyond place that you spoke about, allowing these creatures to pour through and attack your World. With their presence, they will also spread miasma throughout your world that will mutate your dead into an Anomaly as well, instead of being taken by the All Taker that you believe."

The guy who was still glaring at me glared even harder, "And how did you know this? Are you going to tell me that you came from the same world as them? If so, why should we trust you? Aren’t you just one of them?"

I shook my head, "No. Like I said, these Anomalies... These monsters... They open portals to other worlds and they consume and subjugate them. Once they have reached a critical mass, they will then open a portal to the next world and start the process again. They have opened a portal to our world and instead of fighting them there, we crossed through the portal to fight them here instead."

Ach frowned, "You’re telling me... You have also been dealing with them in your world... For the past ten years?"

"Is that how long they have been in your world? Unfortunately, they only started appearing in our world five years ago. So that’s how long we have been fighting them."

"So... You beat them back into this world? And... You’re here to beat them back through that other portal as well?"

I couldn’t help but make a face at that question, which was thankfully hidden by my mask, "That... I’m afraid is not what we’re here to do..."

The guy glaring at me reached over to pick up his laser gun again before pushing himself back to his feet. Though the gun was resting at his side, I could tell that he had no qualms about lifting it to point at us at any moment he thinks we were a threat.

"Why are we even listening to this drivel?! He’s clearly telling lies! He’s either a mutant who had already sold his soul to those monsters or he’s just one of them who managed to shapeshift himself!! Just look at his companions!! They’re all freaks!!"

Dan pointed at himself, "Even me?"

The guy gestured at Dan’s armour with his other hand, "What kind of normal person will dress up in such an outlandish outfit?! You’re obviously a freak!!"

"Hey! That’s rude! This is cool, hor!"

"Cool? That is not cool. You look like some weird tin can."

"Walao eh, this guy has no class bro."

"And what kind of speech is that? Why are you speaking so weirdly?! It’s obvious that you are the same creature and you don’t know how to speak properly yet! That’s why you’re sending this masked guy as your spokesperson! I bet he’s wearing that mask because he’s hideous underneath! You needed to transform your face to speak like us, right?! That’s why you have to hide your face so we wouldn’t be able to tell that you’re some monster!!"

He fired off those accusations rapidly without giving me a chance to answer them before he raised his gun to point at me once again.

"If you truly mean what you said, take off that mask and show us your face!!"

Well... Honestly, I don’t really mind but...

Olivia stepped forward with furrowed brows, "Absolutely not. My Lord is wearing that mask because his identity has to remain a secret from outsiders. You might not believe this but in our World, my Lord is a very important person. Too important to even be talking to the likes of you face to face. The fact that you are even able to stand there after so much disrespect is all thanks to my Lord’s magnanimity. If it wasn’t because of that fact, you would already be dead the moment you tried to threaten my Lord with that weapon."

The guy waved his gun at me, "Ha! I knew it! See?! You’re afraid that we would expose you for who you are! You’re all monsters wearing our skin!! I knew you couldn’t be trusted!! Fuck you! Get out of here!!"

I frowned at him, "You do realise that we just saved you guys from those Anomalies that have been hiding in--"

"That was just you trying to buy our trust!! You let her die!! You watched her die!! You claim you can fight them but you let her die!! You wanted to let us get killed!!"

Sigh... I figured that it was definitely because of the girl that was making him behave so irrationally... But there’s not really anything I can do I suppose...

I looked back at Ach to see if he was willing to tell this guy to calm down but...

He pursed his lips at me, "Where... Is this portal that leads to your world?"

"In the city with the tall buildings and stuff just a few hours walk from here. Know the place?"

He nodded, "Yes. I will... Contact you I suppose... Assuming we can... But for now... Please leave..."

Oh well... Guess I tried...
