What Do You Mean I Have To Comprehend Dao As A Mortal God?

We went back to the camp and told the Vanguards what happened so they won’t be dumb enough to go out on their own to tempt fate. Not that I think they would do it anyway since this group seems to be the cautious type anyway.

Still... We had to log that fact into the database since this would help with future expeditions into this rift.

The survey team still needed some more time to finish their work so Dan and I decided to work our way through the buildings nearby to make sure there weren’t more of those big Anomalies hiding in the corners.

This time, we were more serious about it as we cleared through the buildings, though we were still relatively relaxed about it since we already knew we could handle them pretty easily.

As we stalked through one of the high rise buildings, Dan looked up at the stairs that we would have to climb since there was no power powering the lifts.

"Wah lau eh... We gonna climb all the way up, ah?" He asked, shooting me a pointed look.

I looked at the lift that was right beside the stairs, "Well... Unless you have some way to power the lift, yes. Not that it’s a good idea for us to use it anyway."

"Can’t you fly? You can teleport right?"

I was about to tell him that the point for this wasn’t to reach the top but to scan through the building when I got an idea.

"I guess I can fly both of us to the top of the building then we can work our way down instead. That would be easier than climbing up floor by floor and then needing to come back down again."

"Yeah, that definitely sounds better. Let’s go."

We stepped back outside and made use of the building to cut off line of sight to the camp before I turned to him, wondering how I should bring him up.

He raised an eyebrow at me, "What you waiting for, bro? Christmas ah?"

"I’m thinking of how to get you up there. I’m not gonna carry you up for sure."

"Yeah, no way. I’m not gay, bro."

"You’re pretty gay, actually."

"Shaddup lah. Just do what you did back in Australia lah. You fly up there first and then make a door for me to teleport up there. So simple."

Right, I actually forgot I could do that.

I got him to wait there for me while I flew up towards the top of the building by reversing my gravity, the ground falling away from me rapidly.

I slowed down when I reached the roof to see there was a roof access up here with various pipes and machinery up here that looked like they were supposed to be water tanks and backup generators connected to the building.

Standing in the centre was one of those big monkey wolf hybrid Anomalies but it was currently staring at the roof access door and had its back facing me at the moment.

I descended on top of it quickly and grabbed its head with both my hands, the Anomaly jerking in surprise and trying to look around to see what was going on.

I did not let it live for longer than that as I braced my feet against its shoulders before ripping off its head.

The body wobbled for a moment before it came crashing down on its back with a loud thud, leaving me to toss its head to the side before I finally landed on the roof.

I then created the teleportation door that connected to the ground floor and pushed it open, finding Dan waiting right where I left him.

He stepped through the door and eyed the decapitated corpse of the Anomaly that was lying in a growing pool of blood before turning to raise an eyebrow at me.

"There was one up here ah?"

I nodded, "Had its back to me so I just killed it."

"By ripping off his head... Nice."

I ignored him and went over to the door and tried to open it, only to find that it was locked.

Not being too bothered by that, I simply ripped the door off its hinges before tossing it aside, leaving a gaping doorway for Dan and I to proceed.

Dan took the front with his shield up while I drew my sword, this time wrapping it with the arcane energy from Jia Lian’s ability so that it could slice through the Anomalies like butter.

We descended down a floor and found ourselves in what looked like a modern apartment building’s corridor that led to several doors which housed the apartments themselves.

We then started clearing the floor by checking each apartment and opening the doors to see if there were any Anomalies inside said apartments.

"Kind of eerie, don’t you think?" Dan whispered, holding his shield up and his mace at his side.

I turned to him, "What do you mean?"

"This is technically another world isn’t it? Why does this place look like our world?"

"Well... I think if you were paying attention... They did say that these Worlds that the portals lead to were also once occupied by people. And in these Worlds, there may also be humans like us."

He frowned and turned back to me, "Wait, there are other humans in other Worlds?"

"What the fuck? You really didn’t know? How long have you been a Vanguard already? There’s even human Vanguards who are not native to our World and those guys are unaffected by our restriction on needing a Mortal God’s protection in the rifts. The only thing is that most of them have awakened weaker abilities compared to ours."

"I didn’t know that. Why do I even need to know sia? I just come here and whack Anomalies. Anything else is extra."

"Well... Like I said, these Worlds were once occupied by people as well. Some of them also have humans alongside other fantasy creatures like elves and beastkin too and in those worlds, some of their civilisations have also reached our level of technology too."

He looked around the corridor, "I assume they still died to the Anomalies despite that?"

I shrugged, "They don’t really have people on the same power level as the people from our Earth so... It’s not that surprising I guess? And additionally, from what I know, the only reason why we can actually push them back was because we had people awakening as Mortal Gods which was what turned the tide for us to the point that we could actually farm them. Otherwise, we would also be struggling as well."

"Hmm... Then where are the humans in these other worlds right now? I don’t remember seeing them in our world leh? How do you even know that they are from other worlds?"

I shrugged, "I’m not really sure but I think I’ve read somewhere that while our country took in the less human looking refugees, the other countries prioritised the human looking ones."

"Wah lau, why they so racist?"

"I dunno, I see that as a win though. We get the catgirls and stuff. What’s there not to like about it? The humans can go elsewhere. We don’t need more of them."

He rolled his eyes at me, "Yeah sure. Bet you having fun with all the girls in the team now right? Who you haven’t fuck yet?"

I gave him another kick in the back of his knee and he just chuckled before we finished checking the last room, finding it devoid of any life.

There were obvious traces that these apartments were once occupied though, including one such apartment where a table of rotten food had been laid out, all of them half eaten like the occupants had to abandon them and never came back.

Some of them had signs of struggle with overturned tables and chairs and even blood spatters on the walls but I couldn’t tell if they were struggles caused by Anomalies or other former residents of this World.

We then descended to the next floor and it seems like this floor saw a little bit more chaos as some of the doors were left open and there were more blood splatters and even broken furniture down here.

I’m guessing the people from the top floor descended down here and had to fight their way down or something... But still, I’m not sure if the things they were fighting were Anomalies or just other residents of this apartment which would be quite odd.

We found another one of those big Anomalies inside another room and it spun around immediately as though sensing our presence at the door.

It immediately tried to charge through the door that was obviously too small for it to fit and crashed through the wall, only to be stopped by Dan before I lopped off its head with my sword, letting the creature crash down on the ground.

How the heck did this thing fit inside the room to begin with?

Must have been a local that mutated I guess...
