What Do You Mean I Have To Comprehend Dao As A Mortal God?

Chapter 111: It’s Me, I’m Real

As I had decided earlier, I called up Dan and he told me to come over to his house for dinner which I was now on my way to do.

I was heading towards the apartment lift when a voice came from behind.

"Qingggggg!!"

I turned right as someone came barrelling into me and I was suddenly put in a headlock.

I groaned as I let Dan hold the position for a while before freeing myself from him, "Hey... It’s been a while, bro."

He grinned at me, "A while? Please lah, it feels like forever bro. I almost thought you forgot about me liao."

"Didn’t I just message you yesterday?"

"Yeah, but you never call me out for stuff anymore ever since you started working for our Mortal God. Why? Too busy seducing all the female Guardians is it?"

I rolled my eyes at him, trying to act nonchalant while doing my best not to give away the fact that I was indeed now sexually involved with two of them.

"Do you think I would still spend time with you if I was?"

He smacked me on the back, "Please lah, bros before hoes right? Of course you would!"

I tried to change the topic, "Did you participate in the last expedition?"

"Of course lah, didn’t you see me?"

I pretended to be confused, "See you? When?"

"Wah lau1 eh... You still want to act dumb for how long? Come on lah, you think you put on that stupid mask I cannot recognise you already meh?"

I grimaced, "So you already knew? Since when?"

"Hahaha! I actually wasn’t very sure until that day when I saw you in the rift. Then I know for sure it was you liao."

I looked around to make sure no one else was around to listen in before I turned to give him a serious look, "Does anyone else know?"

He waved his hand at me, "Relax. Of course I wasn’t going to tell anyone. Even if I did, who would actually believe me, right?"

Well... I guess he does have a point. If he were to go around telling people that he’s best friends with the Mortal God, they would probably think that he’s crazy.

He then gestured towards the lift lobby and I continued to walk again towards the lift with him.

"So how are things these few days?" I asked.

He grinned, "Got a big fat paycheck from the most recent expedition so what do you think?"

"I dunno? What are you doing with the money?"

"Well, we’re going on a vacation, obviously. Already booked a flight with the family for a holiday this coming weekend."

I pressed the button to call the lift before turning to him, "Oh? Where are you heading to?"

"Aiyah, nothing too extravagant, still have to keep enough for the kids, ma. We’re just going somewhere close."

"Where? Across the causeway?"

"No lah, Thailand, bro!"

If this was some kind of cartoon, I would have done a face fault right at this very moment.

"Thailand?! Wait... Why there?!"

"What? What’s the problem with Thailand? You racist ah?"

The lift let out a ding and I stepped inside with him while I shot him a look, "You shut up. Are you doing this on purpose?"

"What? What thing?" He asked, looking genuinely confused.

"You haven’t heard? We’re going to Thailand to deal with their rift."

"Oh sick. I didn’t know that. What a coincidence. So you going also ah?"

"Well, obviously? They would want me to take part in the first overseas expedition representing our country after all."

He gave me a confused look, "Ha? Wait... Why would they want you to go with them for this?"

"Why wouldn’t they?"

"I mean... I get why they would ask you to act as a stand in during the expedition the other day because of the attempted assassination... But they can’t just keep using you, can they?"

Now it was my turn to shoot him a confused look as it took me the entirety of the lift ride to realise what he was talking about.

The lift doors opened and he had to flick me on the arm to get me to step out with him, prompting me to grab his shoulder to stop him.

Fuck it, I was already planning to tell him anyway.

Once again, I looked around to make sure there was no one eavesdropping on us before I looked him in the eyes.

"Dan... I’m not a decoy... I’m not a stand in... I am the Mortal God... I awakened as one that day when we went to clear the rift with that Guardian. Somebody with some power to send others into a rift sent me and some other people into another rift. I should have died there but I managed to come back and that’s when I awakened as a Mortal God."

He blinked at me for a good few seconds before pointing a finger at me, "You’re... The Mortal God. You serious? Didn’t you tell me you were signing up as a Guardian?"

"I mean... If you haven’t figured that out... That was a ruse to hide the fact that I’m the Mortal God. My real identity is supposed to be secret after all... Even my own family doesn’t know about this."

"So... You’re really the... Real one? You’re not just some decoy?"

"No... Sorry to disappoint you I guess? I am the real one."

He grabbed my shoulder and suddenly pulled me towards a corner of the corridor and out of sight of the lift lobby.

He stuck his head out to check that there was no one else around before turning back to me and hissing at me.

"Are you crazy?! Why are you telling me this then?!" He whispered.

"I mean... I thought you already figured it out? You saw me wearing the mask and stuff during the expedition and knew it was me right?"

"I thought you weren’t the real one and you’re just standing in! Shit... Now do I have to go into witness protection or something?"

"What the fuck, no? Wait a minute, aren’t you trying to sign up as a Guardian as well?"

"Ha? Of course not! Why the heck would I want to do that? If I join as a Guardian, I’ll be putting myself in danger, won’t I? I have a family, you know?"

Huh... If I remember Olivia said something about him being one of the candidates didn’t she? Did he end up cancelling his application or something?

Well... It’s his life so I won’t force him anyway and admittedly, I actually feel a little more at ease that he wasn’t going to be a Guardian because, as he had mentioned, it’s really going to be a rather dangerous role.

Any expedition that had no casualties are practically miracles and one of the few reasons why we had none in the previous expedition was the fact that we had the advantage of terrain and I was directly involved in the expedition.

If we didn’t have either of those working in our favour, I have no doubts that there might have been a few deaths.

Dan then shot me a look, "So you really are the Mortal God then?"

I nodded, "Yeah..."

"Your family doesn’t know about this?"

"My parents think I’m a Guardian working under the Mortal God... Although I think my sister figured it out from the very beginning."

"Well... I’m not surprised... She’s the smart one after all... You’re always the dumber sibling."

"If you’re going to say that, you’re no better since you thought I was the decoy of all things."

"At least I got it half right. You thought a mask could hide your identity."

"That wasn’t my idea."

"Still dumb. So what are you planning then?"

I raised an eyebrow at him, "What do you mean?"

"I mean you’re the Mortal God right? You’re probably going to be living the life of a Mortal God after this aren’t you? I saw the news about them building some tower for you so you’ll probably be disconnected from everyone else after this right? Is this like some kind of final farewell before you leave for good?"

"Fuck you, you’re making me sound like I’m going to die. Too bad for you, the whole reason for me to keep my identity secret is so I can still come back and torment you with my presence so you’re still stuck with me, Guardian or not."

"Oh man... And here I thought I could finally get rid of you for good," He chuckled sarcastically.

"Yeah, not happening. You know too much. I would have to get rid of you if that ever were to happen."

He then pushed me out from the corner before grinning at me, "Whatever bro. Just be glad that I’m keeping my mouth shut about you being who you are."

"It’s alright, you’ve never been a credible person so no one would believe you anyway."

"Sure, sure. Hurry up and move lah. I bet my family already wondering why we’re so slow."

I couldn’t help but grin, it’s nice to have this semblance of normality despite all the crazy stuff happening.
