Chapter 712 711: The Last Straw
"You're certainly well-informed, Mr. Tang!"
Yan Feifan offered the compliment, and Tang Jun's smug voice came over the line. "The Affiliated Hospital is practically our journal's backyard. I have eyes and ears everywhere."
"Besides, Mr. Yan, you're as prominent as the sun and the moon. Your every move is under the microscope."
Yan Feifan chuckled softly. Tang Jun's tone on the phone suddenly shifted as he started to vent his troubles.
"Mr. Yan, I'm having a tough time of it. We receive plenty of submissions every week, but the overall quality is low."
"Those people from the medical school and the Affiliated Hospital, whenever they write a decent paper, they just have to submit it to one of those foreign medical journals."
"Mr. Yan, for the past few months, our journal has been relying solely on your two papers to maintain its prestige."
"Let me tell you some good news: the number of international downloads and reads for your two papers has already vaulted them into the top two of all papers our journal has published in the last three years."
After a pause, Tang Jun spoke again, his voice pitiful. "Mr. Yan, this major academic paper you're working on... you're not going to abandon me, are you?"
Although publishing in a top-tier international journal like *Nature* or *Science* would garner greater attention and acclaim, Yan Feifan didn't particularly care.
For his purposes—publishing his research findings and preparing for future promotions—the Bin University Medical Edition was more than sufficient.
With his current accomplishments, Yan Feifan had no need to prove or elevate himself by publishing in top international journals.
Furthermore, he firmly believed the cream always rises to the top. A high-quality paper would always attract a real audience.
There was also the fact that the old saying "science has no borders" had now been proven to be nothing more than a ploy by Western countries to better attract high-tech talent from developing nations to serve their interests.
Yan Feifan explained, "Mr. Tang, I'm working with a few of the senior surgeons from the cardiothoracic department to practice and standardize a new surgical method for heart transplantation."
"Once it's perfected, it can reduce the current surgical time for a heart transplant from over six hours to about four and a half."
The moment the words left his mouth, Tang Jun exclaimed, "Ah, Mr. Yan, that's a major research and development breakthrough!"
"Mr. Yan, you must publish the paper with me. Just name your terms, whatever you want!"
Yan Feifan smiled. "Mr. Tang, this paper is bound to be quite long. I seem to recall you have page limits, don't you?"
Tang Jun's voice was urgent. "Mr. Yan, page limits are no problem at all! It all depends on who it's for!"
"Even if your paper were as thick as an encyclopedia, I'd publish it."
Yan Feifan said cheerfully, "We're still in the process of improving and perfecting this new heart transplant method. We can only call it a complete success once we have a successful surgical case under our belts."
Tang Jun quickly replied, "Mr. Yan, then it's a deal. Once you succeed, you have to publish the results with me."
"Mm, no problem!" Yan Feifan agreed without hesitation.
Tang Jun said excitedly over the phone, "Thank you, thank you, Mr. Yan! When you have some free time, I must treat you to a proper feast to express my gratitude."
"That won't be necessary. I'm too busy lately."
After politely declining, Yan Feifan chatted idly with Tang Jun for a few more moments. Just as he was about to hang up, Tang Jun's voice came through the phone again.
"Mr. Yan, since you're working in the cardiothoracic department now, I've come across a patient with ectopia cordis. Are you interested?"
Yan Feifan pressed, "What's the extent of the ectopia?"
Tang Jun explained, "The heart is displaced into the thoracoabdominal cavity, and it's complicated by congenital deformities like a ventricular septal defect and great vessel malformation."
"The case is extraordinarily complex and severe."
He elaborated over the phone, "A rural doctor, who is also a loyal reader of our journal, wrote to me for help."
"He said in his letter that it's a little boy from his hometown. He's already five years old, and the symptoms of his heart condition are worsening."
"To be honest, I'm surprised the boy has even made it this long."
Tang Jun added, "The rural doctor said the boy's family took him to a major hospital, but the prohibitive cost of the surgery and the extreme risks involved made them give up."
Hearing this, Yan Feifan understood what Tang Jun was getting at.
'He's making a play for my charity foundation.'
'Still, congenital ectopia cordis is quite rare.'
The commonly known condition of situs inversus, where all of one's internal organs are a mirror image of their normal positions, is actually a type of congenital cardiac displacement.
However, for people with situs inversus, the spatial relationship between the heart and other organs is correct, their functions are normal, and they're considered just as healthy as anyone else.
A case like the little boy's, with the heart displaced into the thoracoabdominal cavity and complicated by a ventricular septal defect and great vessel malformation, was extremely rare.
'It would be a great learning opportunity, though!'
Yan Feifan mulled it over for a moment, then said, "Mr. Tang, forward the boy's information to He Junxing. He handles the day-to-day affairs of the charity foundation."
"If the details of the boy's case check out, I'll discuss potential treatment and a surgical plan for him with Mr. Liang from the cardiothoracic department..."
After ending the call with Tang Jun, it was already late. Yan Feifan washed up and promptly went to bed...
The next morning, after a good night's sleep, Yan Feifan opened his eyes feeling quite refreshed and clear-headed.
'It's great to be young,' he mused. 'Such a resilient body. A simple night of sleep can wipe away all the fatigue.'
Yan Feifan got up, washed up, and went to the attic terrace for his morning exercise, only to see Su Ye and Duan Yu already working out.
Watching Su Ye twist her waist, lift her hips, kick her legs, and swing her arms as she stretched gracefully, Yan Feifan felt an ever-deeper appreciation for the beauty of life.
"Feifan, about that national badminton player, Guo Fan..."
Yan Feifan moved to Yu Suye's side, stretching as he picked up the conversation. "What about him?"
"Is there another problem with his health?"
Yu Suye shot him a charming sideways glance and pouted. "Why must you always assume the worst?"
"After these few months of rehabilitation and training, he's made a full physical recovery."
"Yesterday, he played an intrasquad match."
"He said he played incredibly well, decisively beat his opponent, and received high praise from his coach. He specifically called to thank Mrs. Qin."
Yan Feifan let out a soft "oh" as he heard Yu Suye giggle. "Mrs. Qin said she can finally rest easy. She doesn't have to worry about that guy suddenly showing up at her door, asking her to make good on her promise to find him a job."
Yan Feifan shook his head and smiled, questioning, "Does Mrs. Qin really have that little faith in me? That can't be right."
Yu Suye laughed. "Mrs. Qin was just kidding. You couldn't tell?"
She suddenly stopped exercising, moved closer to Yan Feifan, and lowered her voice. "Hey, Qee Xiaodan came to the hospital yesterday."
Yan Feifan asked, a bit puzzled, "So she came. Why are you being so mysterious about it?"
Yu Suye mimicked Yan Feifan by rolling her eyes and whispered, "She told me all about her and Zhuo Xingfa's... bedroom activities."
This immediately piqued Yan Feifan's intense interest.
'That guy can't be fully recovered yet. He's being way too impatient.'
He offered a brief critique, then changed the subject. "So, how did it go? What was it like?"
Yu Suye said softly, "Qee Xiaodan said that at first, it felt pretty good. Quite nice, actually. It was very pleasurable for her."
"But..."
"But what?" Yan Feifan pressed.
Yu Suye brushed a few strands of hair stuck to her forehead away. "Qee Xiaodan said that later on, he just kept going and going, ignoring how she felt, and even got rough."
"Combined with all the changes in Zhuo Xingfa lately, that was the last straw for their relationship."
"Qee Xiaodan said she has broken up with him..."
Yan Feifan let out a soft "oh," then asked, "What about him? Did he come to the hospital for a check-up?"
Yu Suye nodded. "He did. It was swollen like..."
