Chapter 711 710: Competing
Monday morning, nearly eleven o'clock, in the cardiac surgery practice room!
"Dr. Gu, that looks awkward. Let me demonstrate..."
Yan Feifan stepped forward into the spot Dr. Gu Lin had vacated, holding surgical forceps and gesturing over the cadaver's heart.
"Mr. Gu, when suturing this vein, I suggest using a backhand stitch... If you use the needle like this, you won't get in Mr. Liang's way, and your own movements will feel much smoother."
When Yan Feifan stepped aside, Gu Lin took his place, picked up the suturing instruments again, and performed the procedure as Yan Feifan had just demonstrated.
"You're right, this feels much more natural."
Gu Lin nodded in agreement. He looked at Liang Zhao Kui across from him and chuckled. "Mr. Liang, operating together like this suddenly makes me feel like I'm dancing with my wife."
"One moment you advance and I retreat, the next you retreat and I advance. We look like we're about to collide, but we always just miss each other, moving in harmonious fusion."
This made Deng Chunming and Zhang Shi'an, who were watching from the side, burst out laughing.
Deng Chunming teased him directly, "That's a pretty good description."
"The question is, Mr. Gu, it's only been a few minutes since you stopped bumping into Mr. Liang's forceps. You're already feeling like the perfect team?"
Gu Lin huffed. "It's mainly because this practice has been stop-and-go, constantly interrupted by Yan for corrections."
"Things were awkward for a bit, but I'm just now finding my rhythm."
He shot a glance at Deng Chunming and said provocatively, "Mr. Deng, believe it or not, Mr. Liang and I will definitely get our surgery time under four and a half hours before you two."
Deng Chunming scoffed, clearly unconvinced. "Since you're so confident, let's make it a competition."
"If you lose, you have to give me your agate Go set."
Gu Lin chuckled, a look of disdain on his face. "I knew you've been eyeing my agate Go set."
"Fine, it's a bet."
"But, Mr. Deng, if you lose, you have to give me your pair of Zitan wood baoding balls."
Deng Chunming rubbed his hands together eagerly. "No problem. It's a deal."
"Yan, you can be our witness..."
Early this morning, Yan Feifan had brought Pan Jichuan to the cardiac surgery department and was immediately led to the practice room. There, facing the cadaver on the operating table, they began discussing the specific steps of the dual-surgeon heart transplant procedure.
Liang Zhao Kui and Gu Lin were responsible for demonstrating the procedure step-by-step, while also voicing the questions and suggestions for improvement they had accumulated over the past two days of verification.
Yan Feifan observed their surgical technique from the side, correcting any mistakes on the spot and answering their questions.
As for their suggestions for improvement, Yan Feifan would run several simulations in his mind. If he felt a suggestion would be effective, he adopted it.
If it wasn't quite right, he would voice his counterarguments.
Overall, he adopted more than he rejected.
So far, they had proposed eleven suggestions for improvement, and Yan Feifan had adopted eight of them.
After all, they were all experts with extensive clinical experience.
Yan Feifan was still a bit more of a theorist when it came to cardiac surgery, and some of his ideas were somewhat idealistic.
Among the five big shots, the absent Dr. Ni Leixing had an important, un-postponable surgery scheduled for today and didn't have time to attend.
Yan Feifan and the four senior surgeons practiced, corrected, and discussed, sometimes even arguing.
They were all incredibly dedicated to the work.
Even Yan Feifan was surprised by their enthusiasm.
For both lunch and dinner, they ate boxed meals. Neither meal lasted more than fifteen minutes before they were back to work.
Yan Feifan, Pan Jichuan, and Dr. Ni Leixing—who joined at five in the afternoon—worked straight through until after ten at night.
Yan Feifan was starting to wilt, but he found that these old-timers in their fifties and sixties were each more energetic than the last.
"Mr. Liang, Dr. Gu, Mr. Deng, Dr. Ni, Dr. Zhang, you are all as vigorous as ever. I'm impressed, truly impressed."
Yan Feifan cupped his hands and admitted defeat. "I'm having trouble keeping up, and I still have to work tomorrow."
"Shall we call it a day?"
Liang Zhao Kui and Gu Lin exchanged glances with the others. Liang Zhao Kui said, "After a full day of repeated practice and discussion, the steps and standards for this dual-surgeon heart transplant method are pretty much established."
"What we lack now is just coordination and familiarity."
"That's not something we can rush."
"Let's stop here for today?"
"Alright, let's stop here!"
Gu Lin was the first to agree. He walked over, clapped Yan Feifan on the shoulder, and said, "Yan, you're still a bit frail."
"As a surgeon, a strong body is a prerequisite. Go home, eat well, and get more exercise."
"I will, I will!"
Yan Feifan replied obediently, then glanced toward the cadaver on the operating table.
Gu Lin patted his shoulder again. "Don't worry about this. We'll have the students come and clean up."
"You can just head straight home."
Given the opening, Yan Feifan took the opportunity to make a quick exit, hurrying out of the operating room with Pan Jichuan.
Once the two young men had left, Liang Zhao Kui, Gu Lin, Deng Chunming, Ni Leixing, and Zhang Shi'an all fell silent, just standing there and looking at one another.
After a minute or two, Zhang Shi'an broke the silence.
He declared with full confidence, "I'm the youngest and in the best shape. I refuse to believe any of you can outlast me."
The moment he said this, Ni Leixing groaned, "Ouch, ouch," and sat down on a nearby stool, clutching his back.
With him leading the way, the other four quickly found places to sit down as well.
Some pounded their lower backs, others rubbed their calves, and some rotated their shoulders. Every one of them had a pained, grimacing expression.
They looked at each other's displays of exhaustion and, as if on cue, burst out laughing.
Liang Zhao Kui pointed at the four of them, shaking his head with a smile. "Every one of you. You're not kids anymore, yet you're still competing like children. You're just asking for misery."
Gu Lin huffed. "Mr. Liang, how can you talk? Weren't you just putting on a brave face yourself?"
Liang Zhao Kui looked at Ni Leixing. "Mr. Ni performed a cardiac deformity repair surgery for over six hours today."
"I was waiting for him to be the first to say he couldn't go on."
Seeing that everyone was looking at him, Ni Leixing snorted coldly. "Actually, I noticed it the moment I came into the practice room."
"You old guys were secretly competing. To do that in front of Yan... you really aren't afraid of embarrassing yourselves."
"Since you all wanted to tough it out, I naturally had to risk my life to keep you company."
Gu Lin pointed a weak finger at him and said, exasperated, "You, you just drag everyone down with you."
Then he suddenly smiled. "It's been a long time since I felt this competitive. I have to say, even though I'm exhausted right now, I'm actually quite happy."
Liang Zhao Kui chuckled. "That's because Yan's dual-surgeon technique has genuinely captivated you and reawakened your passion for your work."
Gu Lin nodded, then sighed. "There's something else. I have to admit, Yan makes me feel threatened, and... inadequate."
"I don't want to show any fear or weakness in front of him!"
At these words, Deng Chunming, Ni Leixing, and Zhang Shi'an all nodded in deep agreement.
Seeing them all look at him, Liang Zhao Kui also sighed. "I admit, I feel the same way..."
When Yan Feifan returned to Zuimo Court, he was surprised to find that Duan Yu was back.
"Why didn't you stay home for a few more days?"
Duan Yu smiled. "Three days was enough. Any longer and my parents would have started to find me annoying."
Yan Feifan didn't see Mo Xiaolei and asked, only to learn that he was staying at a small inn nearby.
"Duan Yu, Mo Xiaolei's job has been arranged. Have him bring his personal ID and other documents directly to the hospital's logistics department."
"Someone there will handle his onboarding process."
Duan Yu said gratefully, "Mr. Yan, thank you."
"It was nothing, don't mention it!" Yan Feifan replied nonchalantly.
To him, it really was a small matter.
He had only mentioned it to Ren Zhen, the director of Liu Jin's office, who had assured him it was easy to handle and that he would take care of it.
That very afternoon, he received word that it was all settled.
Just then, Yan Feifan's phone rang again.
It was a call from Tang Jun, the editor-in-chief of the Binhai Medical Journal.
"Mr. Yan, I've heard you and the big shots in cardiac surgery are working on something big."
"You have to publish the medical paper with me..."
