Chapter 36: General Markson’s Wife (1)
When they got to the wooden double doors, they were greeted by another android. This one, however, was wearing a butler’s uniform and led them straight to some drawing room.
As they walked, Freya couldn’t help but be amazed at the interior of the house. It was fancy and expensive looking, but somehow, it also seemed homey. Like people actually lived here rather than looking like some kind of museum.
The walls were colorful and bright and covered with all sorts of artworks. Trinkets sat on desks and there were lots of books everywhere. Not just those classic hardcover ones, but there were a bunch of paperbacks too.
A few looked like the kind of thing she would read.
Guess even in a futuristic type world, some people still just love the smell of books... Freya mused to herself as they came to a stop in front of a wooden doorway.
"Your guests have arrived, Madam Elisa." The android stated in a loud voice while knocking on the door.
A second later, the door flung open revealing a middle-aged woman wearing a colorful sundress. Her salt-and-pepper hair was tied back into a messy bun with a hairpin and her honey brown eyes gleamed with excitement.
She was taller than Freya, almost reaching Xavier’s height, and her body was quite toned with clearly defined muscles. Freya couldn’t quite tell what kind of beast she was as she looked almost human.
"Xavier!" The beastwoman exclaimed, pulling the snake beastman into a bear hug. "It’s been too long! Have you been eating well? Steven hasn’t been too hard on you has he? Also what’s this about you being married?! You didn’t even tell me anything, you damn brat!"
Freya watched the entire thing in horror, not sure what to say or do. She expected multiple ways for this beastwoman to act around them. But not this.
"It’s nice to see you too, Aunt Elisa." Xavier said gruffily, patting the beastwoman on the back awkwardly. "Now why don’t I introduce you to my wife..."
Freya had to bite her lip to stop herself from hounding Xavier with questions. What did he mean by aunt?! Were they related or was it just out of respect for the older beastwoman? Also if they were family, why the hell didn’t he tell her?
"Hmph! You still haven’t answered my questions." The beastwoman muttered, letting go of Xavier she then turned to Freya and gave her a once over.
Her face had gone stern, making Freya instinctively gulp. Xavier had said that she would be fine, but she was starting to doubt that. Elisa looked ready to eat her up.
She then gave Freya a softer smile and said, "You seem like a good kid. Come inside so we can get introduced. I’ll have some snacks and refreshments prepared."
Freya numbly nodded her head, unable to say a word. The beastwoman then turned away, heading right back into the drawing room. Freya followed suit with Xavier right behind her.
The room was big and bright with three walls covered with windows overlooking a flower garden. A gentle breeze blew through the room and in the center lay some colorful couches with a coffee table.
Judging by how Elisa was dressed, Freya could guess all the house designs were to her tastes. Because she couldn’t see someone like General Markson liking this kind of stuff.
She could be wrong though. But in her eyes, Elisa was the chaos to General Markson’s order.
"You two can sit there." Elisa instructed, moving to the opposite couch.
They did as she said and sat next to each other. Xavier kept close to her as he sat down, however, he made sure their bodies didn’t touch. Elisa eyed them as they settled down.
Another android appeared with refreshments before anyone could say a word and began setting the snacks and drinks onto the coffee table.
"I’ll serve tea." Xavier stated, picking up the tea pot before the android could. The snake beastman then said, "Who wants?"
"I’m fine, thanks." Freya answered as the android left, closing the door behind it.
Elisa then responded, "You know how I like my tea."
Xavier quietly made Elisa a cup of tea while Elisa picked up a plate of biscuits. She offered it to Freya, but the younger woman declined the offer.
Once Xavier had made the older beastwoman a cup of tea as well as one for himself, he settled back down next to Freya.
"Aunt Elisa, this is my wife Freya Davis." Xavier said, doing introductions between the two women. "Freya, this is my... mother’s cousin, Elisa Markson. Though my brothers and I treat her like an aunt."
Before Freya had a chance to process what he just said, Elisa said, "It’s nice to meet you Freya. You can call me Aunt Elisa or just Elisa if you want... I must say I’m surprised by all this. You two met in the Outer Land a few days ago, correct?"
"That’s correct." Freya nodded her head. "Xavier saved me from a group of Wanderers while on a mission there..."
She decided to keep it vague, still not sure about Elisa. The older beastwoman seemed to be protective of Xavier. Maybe because of their relationship.
Honestly, Freya was a little surprised by their easy going relationship despite everything. Then again, it did explain why General Markson treated Xavier well when others hated on him solely for being a snake.
He was just looking out for his wife’s family.
"I see..." Elisa sipped on her tea for a moment. She then mused, "Perhaps it’s not that surprising. Steven was pretty much the same way before we met. Then everything happened so fast... Still, how could you not hold a ceremony, Xavier?!"
"I’m not really into that kind of thing." Freya smiled awkwardly. "I wanted to keep things simple..."
Elisa pursed her lips, giving Xavier a sharp look. "You better have not pressured her."
"I didn’t..." Xavier muttered back dryly before taking a sip of his tea.
Elisa placed a hand on her cheek and murmured, "Fine, I’ll believe you this once... But please tell me you two are at least planning on a honeymoon."
