Chapter 249: Hope Lost
Myles had already seen the outcome long before it unfolded in front of him. The moment Red's attention shifted and that overwhelming killing intent locked onto the eight men, the direction of the battle became clear in his mind without any doubt.
A faint smirk formed on his lips as he adjusted his stance with calm precision.
He shifted his body to the side in one smooth motion, removing himself from the direct path of danger while keeping his awareness spread across the battlefield.
He did not rush or hesitate. His movement carried quiet confidence as if he had already stepped ahead of everyone else at this moment. His mind was extremely clear right now.
Red surged forward once more with boiling blood and violent force driving every motion. The seven remaining elites stood frozen as their eyes widened in disbelief.
What charged toward them no longer resembled the man they once followed. The difference felt immediate and absolute.
Red had always been a ruthless and cold psychopath. He had acted without hesitation in battle and showed no mercy when it was needed for his own fun in hurting people.
Yet even then, he had remained aware of his surroundings. He had understood his position and recognized those who stood beside him.
That awareness had disappeared completely now.
What remained rushed forward like a creature that only knew how to destroy. Rage filled every movement he made and erased any trace of thought.
His presence pressed down on them with suffocating weight. His body made the sight even worse. Flesh continued to fall apart as he moved. Pieces broke away unevenly and turned dark before dissolving into ash. Blood seeped out from every crack and tear across his skin. The heat rising from his body distorted the air around him.
The figure in front of them looked unstable and unnatural as if something inside him continued to expand and tear him apart from within.
That grotesque transformation sent a chill through their bodies and made their instincts react before their minds could catch up.
Peter forced his body to move first. His expression tightened as he stepped forward despite the fear pressing into his chest. He refused to accept what he was seeing.
"Red! It's us! We came to help you!" His voice rose sharply as he called out with urgency that broke through the situation around them.
His words carried across the distance but nothing changed. Red did not slow down. He did not react. His eyes remained locked forward without recognition.
There was no pause or hesitation in his movement. The intent behind him stayed the same and it crushed any hope that still lingered within Peter's mind.
That was when the truth settled heavily inside him.
This was a mistake.
"I told you!" Varyn shouted as his voice shook under the growing fear. His body tensed as he took a step back and tried to regain control of the situation. "We have to get out of here before—"
His warning never reached its end.
Red closed the distance in an instant. One moment there was space between them and the next it vanished completely.
The speed behind that movement left no room to react. His blade moved in a single clean motion like before.
Varyn's head separated from his body without resistance.
Shock spread through the remaining elites the moment Varyn's body collapsed.
The clean separation of his head from his shoulders that happened once again froze their thoughts before fear finally took control completely.
Their discipline shattered. No one tried to hold formation anymore. Weapons lowered without purpose as their survival instinct took over.
They turned and scrambled away in different directions. Their movements were rough and uncoordinated as they forced their bodies to run despite the crushing pressure that still weighed down on them.
"Fuck this!"
"He is completely mad now. I'm going to die if I stay here!"
"I DON'T WANNA DIE!"
The formation that once held order for them broke apart into chaos. None of them looked back when they ran away.
But Peter did not move.
He remained where he stood, his body locked in place as everything around him seemed to fade into distant noise.
His grip loosened slowly around his sword as his eyes stayed fixed on the figure in front of him. Disappointment pressed into him first in a heavy and suffocating wave. It mixed with fear that he could no longer suppress. Then something deeper settled beneath both of them… Loss.
The man he had followed. The man who had led him forward and shaped his ambition. The one who had shown him power and made him believe he could reach it. That man no longer existed in front of him.
What stood there now barely held any trace of humanity.
Red's body continued to fall apart even as he stood. Flesh cracked and peeled away while blood ran freely from every part of him. Heat distorted the space around his form. His presence no longer felt like a leader or even a person. It felt like an unstable monster that had already begun to collapse under its own power.
Their eyes met.
Red looked at him but there was nothing behind that gaze. No recognition or memory. Only a hollow and violent intent that treated him no differently from anything else on the battlefield.
Peter looked back, and in that moment, something inside him finally broke.
The last thread of hope disappeared completely.
His fingers opened. The sword slipped from his grasp and fell to the ground with a dull sound that barely reached his ears.
His shoulders dropped as the strength left his body. He no longer tried to fight. He no longer tried to speak.
There was nothing left to save.
Red moved.
The distance between them vanished instantly. His blade drove forward in a direct and brutal motion to pierce straight through Peter's chest without resistance. The tip of the weapon forced through his back as the impact pushed his body slightly off balance.
Peter's body jerked. Blood filled his mouth before spilling out in a thick stream.
His eyes remained open as the life inside them faded rapidly, the despair still frozen within his expression.
Red pulled the blade free.
A burst of blood followed as Peter's body collapsed onto the broken ground.
The weight of his fall ended without resistance, leaving him motionless among the spreading stain beneath him.
Peter staggered. A violent cough forced its way out of him as blood spilled from his mouth in a heavy flow.
For a moment, his posture faltered before he dropped to one knee, then fully to the ground.
Red's eyes lifted slowly. His gaze moved across the battlefield with unstable focus as if searching for Myles or anything else he could kill.
At that moment, just as Red's gaze wandered across the battlefield in search of something else to destroy, a presence slipped into his blind spot without resistance.
Myles appeared behind him as if he had always been there.
"Looking for me?"
The words reached Red a fraction too late.
Myles moved immediately after speaking. His leg drove forward with explosive force and connected cleanly with Red's body.
The impact carried enough power to lift Red's entire body off the ground and send him flying across the battlefield.
He crashed several meters away and slammed into the crystal wall behind him. The collision shattered the surface on impact and spread a large crack.
The force echoed through the area before fading.
Red dropped from the wall and landed roughly. His body absorbs the impact with a heavy thud. For a moment, he remained there as his frame trembled under the strain that already pushed it beyond its limit.
Then his head lifted sharply.
A low growl escaped him.
His teeth clenched hard as he forced himself back up. The blood around his body reacted differently now. It no longer spread like mist but gathered and thickened into a dense liquid that floated around him in unstable currents.
The mass moved as if it carried weight and intent of its own, circling him in uneven flows that pulsed with heat.
Red pushed off the ground and lunged forward again.
Myles closed the distance at the same time. His body cut forward in a direct line as his blades moved without hesitation. Fangblade led the assault with a sharp downward arc while Noctyrix followed from a tight angle aimed at Red's other side.
Red met his attack. His movements remained erratic and driven by instinct but the surge of power inside him forced his body to keep up.
His blade rose in time to block the first strike. The impact rang out sharply as metal collided with tremendous force. He twisted his body and intercepted the second attack as well.
Their clash continued at close range.
Red pushed forward with raw aggression. His attacks lacked structure but carried overwhelming force behind them.
He forced Myles to shift his position repeatedly as his blade cut through the air in wide and violent swings.
A few of those strikes broke through the flow of Myles' movement and grazed him. One of them cut across his side. Another slash scraped along his shoulder. Shallow wounds full of corruption formed, but they did not slow him down.
Myles adjusted.
His movements tightened as his focus sharpened further. He read the pattern hidden within Red's chaos and moved ahead of it.
A shift in footing opened a narrow window. He stepped into it without hesitation.
Fangblade struck first to draw the block. The moment Red reacted, Noctyrix slipped through from the opposite side.
The blade cut clean and Red's left hand separated at the wrist.
