Chapter 295: Fountain of Eden [ 4 ]
"We can see you."
"Come out already, human..."
Yeah...
I had definitely been found out.
Should I just turn into black lightning and run away? It’s definitely an option, but what if they mean no harm?
"Stop being so gentle. This bastard just drank from our fountain!"
"Kill him! Kill him! Kill him!"
Never mind.
For theatrics purposes, I decided to emerge from the grass and fly up slightly. My clothes fluttered in what appeared to be the wind, but was actually the Giants’ breath.
Though with me ascending so fearlessly, none of them dared to attack. It wasn’t because they felt my energy and became frightened, but rather the fact that they hadn’t seen a human in so long that my appearance made them curious.
"Oho? He looks just like a mosquito."
"Do you think he buzzes like a mosquito too? Hey, human. Talk to us."
"He does have a mouth, right? I don’t have my glasses."
Hmm.
What to do, what to do...?
"Hello?" I spoke up, enhancing my voice with Telekinesis so everyone could hear me.
Yet all that did was make all the Giants fall quiet and stare at me in disbelief.
"The mosquito is pretty loud."
"Where are its wings, though?"
"Are you forgetting that this is a human, not a mosquito?"
The Giants all paused again, understanding that I was in fact not a mosquito. Afterwards, they leaned in slightly, inspecting me a bit closer.
At first, I thought it was going well. Maybe I could even befriend these Giants.
But that thought unfortunately didn’t last very long, as one of the Giants got a ridiculous idea to try and crush me between his fingers. His speed was impressive given his size.
Though that didn’t change the fact that with a single flick of my finger, I managed to completely mangle the Giant’s body, compressing it to the point it was only the size of a small pebble. His bones cracked so loudly, it was almost like a mountain was collapsing atop them.
By the time the cracking stopped, the Giant was nothing more than a marble that coincidentally resembled something similar to a Demonic Core. Much like the Demonic Cores of the Demon Kings I had stored inside my dimensional ring.
As it so happens, I decided to store his compressed body inside my dimensional ring as well.
Every single one of the Giants fell silent once more, except for some reason, they weren’t staring at me with fear in their gazes. Rather, it was something different.
Something like... reverence?
"Divine Beast!"
"I-It’s really a Divine Beast!"
"Even his eyes... Is this Gabriel? G-Gabriel is alive?"
They huddled even closer to me. None of them seemed like they wanted to fight anymore, and if that wasn’t enough, they were referring to the same name that Indra mentioned.
Gabriel Edware.
My alleged Divine Beast name.
And somehow, every single Giant present knew me, called out to me, and even tried to pick me up to lift me above their heads, almost like I didn’t belong any lower.
I was... conflicted, to say the least. I didn’t even remember my life as a Divine Beast, nor did I know how these beings were related to me in the slightest.
For all I knew, I could’ve been their creator, their caretaker, or someone they had met while I was on my journey. There were far too many mysteries, and I felt like the only way to solve those mysteries was by tapping into more of my Divine Energy.
"..."
Hm.
I should play along with this for now, shouldn’t I?
"It is I..."
Okay, definitely not doing that corny shit.
"I’m glad to be back. Though, forgive me, for I have lost a lot of my memories. I can’t recognize any of you," I apologized.
The Giants exchanged a few glances, then nodded at me.
"It’s no problem, Gabriel."
"Yeah! We missed you. It’s really hard to imagine you’re back, since you died so gruesomely."
"Ahem... Yeah, I doubt anyone could survive their soul being turned to dust. Sheesh, just remembering the day when the others turned their backs on you is making me angry."
Huh...?
Hold on now.
The others?
"By others, are you referring to Indra, Rachel... the others, right?"
The Giants once again exchanged a glance and nodded at me.
"Yeah. The others said you ####, ##...##."
Their eyes began to glow a deep purple color, and their words turned unintelligible. The more they talked about me, the worse it got, to the point where I felt like they didn’t even realize I was there anymore.
I backed off, and it looked like I was right. My existence was just randomly filtered out of their brains as they gradually began talking about their personal lives. It didn’t take long for them to walk away and leave me alone again.
I was nothing short of flustered, barely containing my surprise. The Divine Beasts turned their backs on me? Is that why all of this happened? My memories of the world as it could’ve been?
All I need now are the memories of what used to be. My memories, and what started this whole mess. Who was even on my side, besides Clementine, of course?
Those are all things I needed to figure out, but then again, I felt like my existence had some connection to the Angels too. What if I sought them out? What if I sought Kai out personally?
So many things to do, and so little time to do them.
Welp.
I guess if the Giants really didn’t care about my presence, I best get on with it. For good measure, I decided to get some more water from the fountain.
Afterwards, I made my way into the sky and gazed down. Adam wanted some Purified Radishes, and honestly, if those red mountains in the distance were what I thought they were... I had no idea how to bring them back.
No way would they fit into my dimensional ring.
Maybe two Purified Radish slices?
Yeah.
That must be it.
