Chapter 221 - 31: This Is Your Destiny
In an environment of extreme despair and oppression, this ancient civilization managed to maintain its conscience and Order without collapsing solely through the power of fanatical faith.
Even if this faith... was one everyone knew to be false, it didn’t matter. Deceiving oneself is an exceptionally simple thing to do.
Westheid couldn’t help but remark,
"So that’s why you’re the only one left in the Monastery."
’Not only did you have to lead the charge and break enemy lines, but you also had to brutally kill your own compatriots. The mental pressure was overwhelming.’
’This is no job for a human being.’
"No one wants to be the executioner who knows their actions are wrong, but someone has to do it. The people need spiritual comfort."
Wan Qi turned slightly to the side, her eyes downcast as she spoke:
"A false faith only brings a false sense of peace and comfort, numbing one’s reason and spirit... But if not for this, everyone... would be crushed by fear and despair."
"In the past, Xuli only ever assisted other kingdoms in fending off invasions. But now, we have to face the main forces of Chaos head-on. No kingdom can withstand such an assault. Just breaking through their blockade this time has nearly wiped us out... We are already on a countdown to extinction."
"I always knew this day would come, but I never thought it would be so soon. I really wanted to make more happy memories."
The gray-haired girl continued to mutter and complain for a while longer before she pulled away from Westheid’s embrace.
"Thank you. After every funeral, just holding you like this makes me feel so much better."
"Without West’s arms to hold me, I really don’t know what I would do."
Westheid looked at Wan Qi’s melancholic profile and said suddenly,
"It’s too early to give up now. What if the faith isn’t false?"
"Hm?"
Westheid: "I’m saying, what if a real god existed to protect and save us?"
Wan Qi let out a soft laugh and shook her head. "If that were the case, it would be true salvation. But there’s no point in such hypotheticals. West, you don’t have to comfort me. I’ve always been clear-headed. I never place my hopes in false idols."
"Exactly. And that’s why you possess a free will that others don’t."
Westheid said grimly, "Gods don’t come from prayers. They are forged with one’s own hands."
"Is it possible that you could become that salvation?"
The gray-haired girl shook her head. "I don’t have that kind of power."
"You absolutely do! It’s easily within your reach!"
Westheid gripped Wan Qi’s shoulders, his expression serious. "You will ascend to godhood and become the savior of the Mortal World!"
Wan Qi’s lips curled into a soft, noncommittal smile.
"You don’t believe me?"
"It’s truly hard to believe."
’Westheid put himself in her shoes. His words were empty, with no proof. It was hard to be convincing, and she would likely see it as mere encouragement and comfort. He needed to give her at least one plausible reason, right?’
So, he decided to present his evidence.
"Actually, there’s something I have to tell you. I don’t belong to this era. I’m from the future."
Westheid had always hated it when people were cryptic; he believed being open and direct was the most efficient way to communicate.
’Besides, this place isn’t even truly real. Since I’m inside the Master of Extinction’s memories, it doesn’t matter what I say or do.’
Wan Qi tilted her head. "The future?"
Westheid nodded emphatically. "Yes, the future. I suspect I was caught in some kind of temporal turbulence, which is how I ended up in the distant past and met you."
’How he had come to interact with this ancient era wasn’t much of a mystery.’
’In the era where the Celestial Gods had vanished, the disaster that struck the Celestial Vault Kingdom, the Temporal Chaos, would have generated countless pockets of temporal turbulence. The stable timeline would have collapsed only then, and only then would it have been possible to intersect with the past.’
Wan Qi’s crimson eyes met Westheid’s dark violet ones for a long moment before she sighed.
"It’s... incredible. But you’re not lying."
Westheid smiled. "You can tell whether I’m lying or not, can’t you?"
"The future... how far in the future? In that case, does that mean you’re younger than me, West?"
’Wan Qi’s imagination was far too conservative; she was limiting the scope to a few decades, or perhaps even just a few years.’
Westheid recalled the chronicles. "About... ten thousand years from now, I think."
"Ten thousand years?!"
Wan Qi was stunned by the staggering timescale.
"Yes, that’s about right. In my era, everything that happened here has long been forgotten. But one thing is very clear: the Mortal World was not destroyed. We drove Chaos to the very edge of civilization!"
"And all of this was because of the Ascension of the first Celestial God, the Venerable Master of the Azure Heaven!"
Westheid shook the gray-haired girl’s shoulders and said,
"Wan Qi! This is your destiny!"
"You are destined to become the Venerable Master of the Azure Heaven! This isn’t a hope or a guess—it’s an established fact that has already happened!"
Startled by Westheid’s fanatical fervor, Wan Qi let out a small whimper and said,
"Even if you say that, I don’t know what to do..."
"I’ll help you! I’ve already planned out your path to godhood!"
Westheid stroked his bracelet and said,
"The path to Ascension lies within this!"
Although the Master of Extinction’s own constraints prevented Westheid from knowing the memories that came before this moment,
upon seeing the prepared research materials and the complete Ascension Ceremony, he immediately understood what ’he’ had been planning.
It was to push Wan Qi to the throne of a god and accomplish the Great Enterprise of creating the first Celestial God!
’So I’m the Apostle who created a god?’
’That’s right. It would be pretty stupid to know the correct answer and not just copy it.’
Spurred on by Westheid’s fervent encouragement, Wan Qi’s delicate brows furrowed slightly.
"If I become a god... does that mean I can save everyone?"
"No more bloodshed, no more suffering, and no more sorrow?"
Westheid: "Of course! A Celestial God can do whatever they wish. Your will shall be above all else! You can do all of that!"
’Hell, forget something as minor as creating a utopia—strengthening the entire world would be a damn given!’
Wan Qi’s crimson eyes widened, her cherry-like lips parting slightly.
"When that time comes, can I lay down all my burdens and go on a nice vacation with West? I’ve read in the archives that in the past, there wasn’t just sunlight, but also beaches, coastlines..."
"All of that will be commonplace."
"And we won’t have to eat synthetic food? We can eat as much natural food as we want?"
"With the greatest of ease."
"Then..."
’Westheid felt like he was tricking a little girl. With every promise he made, the gray-haired girl’s eyes grew a little brighter.’
Finally, after voicing all her hopes and questions, Wan Qi let out a long breath and looked at Westheid with an unprecedented seriousness.
"Then I will become a god. I absolutely must! No matter what!"
’Your desires are so easily satisfied. You want to become a god just for that?’
Westheid wasn’t sure what to say, but it was for the best that Wan Qi’s desire for Ascension had been ignited.
"West, we have a promise, then?"
Wan Qi’s face broke into a smile as she extended a hand toward her companion.
"Yes, it’s a promise."
The man with black hair and violet eyes smiled in return, reaching out to take the gray-haired girl’s hand.
"CRACK—"
But just as Westheid’s fingertips were about to touch Wan Qi’s, a crisp shattering sound rang out.
Westheid’s arm began to crack and fold like a shattered mirror. Everything before him seemed to freeze in place, and he could still clearly see the stunned look in Wan Qi’s eyes.
But in the blink of an eye, he was swallowed by a vortex.
