Chapter 241 - 241: Ch241: The Hidden Lair
They raced away from the kingdom through the main gate, leaving the crowded streets behind as the chase spilled into the open fields beyond the walls.
The man in green sprinted toward the forest, his satchel bouncing against his side with every step.
*BOOM!*
Stone walls erupted from the ground behind him, blocking the path Daniel and Zero had just crossed.
The guards stationed at the main gate immediately noticed the commotion. Their hands tightened around weapon hilts as they watched the chase unfold.
Above them, guards on the watchtower raised their bows and crossbows, drawing the strings tight and taking aim at the fleeing figures.
But they didn't fire.
Their weapons remained trained on the group, ready to react at the slightest sign of danger.
But as the man reached the edge of the forest, he raised a hand to his face and tore away the wooden mask he had been wearing, throwing it aside.
His true face was finally revealed.
A faint, sinister smile curled at the corners of his lips.
The moment he crossed between a few trees, he raised his hand.
*CRACK!*
Massive stone slabs suddenly erupted from the ground, shooting vertically into the air before crashing down into a thick bush covered in leaves and tangled branches.
Zero turned around in a hurry, his eyes widened.
A huge hole lay beneath the thick bushes, its edges concealed by layers of leaves, as though it had been there all along, concealed beneath the overgrown vegetation.
"Daniel, what do we do?" Zero asked, his voice tense, as silence swept through the area.
"Daniel?"
Zero looked around.
"Daniel!"
He called out again, but there was no response.
Daniel was nowhere to be found.
…
*Scrape…*
*THUD*
A cloud of loose dirt drifted through the narrow tunnel as Klaus landed heavily on the ground. He coughed, brushed the dirt from his worn green tunic, and slowly pushed himself to his feet.
"Phew… that was close," Klaus muttered, glancing toward the tunnel above.
A faint, relieved smile appeared on his face.
"Thank goodness I made a secret base here. I should close the dungeon before anyone else finds their way inside."
He turned toward the entrance and raised his hand.
'Dungeon? What?' Daniel wondered — hidden within Klaus's shadow, he remained completely still, watching his every movement.
A few steps deeper into the tunnel, Klaus stopped in front of a makeshift door. It looked like a crude shield woven from thick bamboo, blocking the passage ahead.
Yet a faint white glow seeped through the gaps, illuminating the surrounding dirt walls.
Klaus approached it with a hurried jog and stepped through.
*FLASH*
'Shit! I can't see. Ugh, it's too bright!'
A blinding white light flooded Daniel's vision. He instinctively squeezed his eyes shut, but the brightness still burned through his eyelids.
For a few moments, everything vanished beneath the overwhelming light, leaving nothing but white in his vision.
Then, just as suddenly as it had appeared, the blinding light faded away.
Daniel's vision slowly returned.
The first thing he noticed was the silence.
Klaus stood inside a massive, empty dome. The walls were carved from dark stone, their uneven surfaces disappearing into the vast darkness overhead.
Ancient-looking torches were mounted at regular intervals along the walls, their flames dancing gently and casting pools of warm light across the chamber.
The air felt strangely still.
"Khar Khe Kha!"
Klaus's voice echoed throughout the dome.
*Krrrrr…*
Something stirred above them.
A faint blue glow appeared in the darkness overhead before slowly descending toward the ground. A spherical object emerged from the shadows.
It was completely round, with no limbs. Its entire body consisted of a smooth, translucent blue glow, like a ball of condensed energy floating weightlessly in the air.
It bobbed gently from side to side, resembling a strange magical balloon.
"What is it, boss?" a voice came from the sphere.
Daniel's eyes narrowed as he watched the strange sphere. The voice hadn't come from a mouth.
The blue sphere didn't even have one.
"Close this dungeon and move it somewhere else. Somewhere far away," Klaus ordered, his normally composed voice carrying a hint of urgency.
"We can't, boss. At your command, the dungeon is currently upgrading to the next level."
"How long will it take?"
"Thirteen more hours, boss."
Klaus's expression immediately changed. The faint tension in his face hardened into panic, and fingers curled into fists.
"We don't have thirteen hours. Stop the upgrade and keep the entrance closed," Klaus commanded.
The blue sphere pulsed softly.
"But, boss, stopping the upgrade will cost us twenty Mana Crystals, twenty souls, and, most importantly…the Dragon Tear."
Klaus fell silent, his gaze dropping toward the stone floor.
Twenty Mana Crystals, twenty souls, and the Dragon Tear.
The resources required for a dungeon upgrade were extraordinarily valuable. But among them, the Dragon Tear was by far the most precious.
His eyes narrowed as an old memory surfaced.
Klaus remembered sneaking into the Royal Saints' castle, risking his life to obtain the Dragon Tear. He had nearly been caught and killed during the attempt.
And now, abandoning the upgrade would mean throwing all of that away.
Klaus slowly exhaled.
The dungeon had only one entrance. One entrance that allowed him to enter and leave.
"Fuck! I should've killed them before!" Klaus spat, frustration twisting his expression.
"Boss, are you in danger?"
Klaus's eye twitched. "Obviously. Now you noticed?"
The blue sphere remained suspended in the air, its gentle glow illuminating Klaus's increasingly tense expression. The dungeon was bound to Klaus as its host. If Klaus died, the dungeon would disappear with him.
"Boss, stay calm," Khar Khe Kha said. "The outsiders can't even touch you here."
The blue sphere pulsed once.
"The dungeon is currently in the middle of its upgrading process. During this period, its difficulty can be raised to its maximum potential."
Klaus's expression slowly changed.
Khar Khe Kha continued.
"Instead of sending them directly to the third floor, I'll redirect the outsiders to the first floor. I'll spawn as many creatures as possible and expand the dungeon's base tenfold. But doing so might increase the time required to complete the upgrade."
The sphere's blue glow flickered.
"By the time they reach the fifth floor, those shamans will either be dead… or so weak they'll crumble like dry leaves. Beheheh…"
