Chapter 347: Didn’t Eat?
Slash!
A head fell from the neck, and blood spurted several meters high.
Ju Ye withdrew his long spear, glanced around, and there was no longer a living enemy.
"How many is this?"
Li Rui’s voice came from behind him.
"The eighth one."
Their mysterious team had traveled south along the Western Kingdom’s defensive line for dozens of miles, encountering scouts tracking them, none of whom survived.
Among them were some tricky figures adept at escaping but they couldn’t evade Li Rui’s perception and were intercepted by the assassins of the Field Clan on their way back to report.
Li Rui dipped his brush in blood and marked on the map. Counting this one, the old beast skin map had been altered with many marks, all denoting encountered enemies and observed sections of the Western Country’s defense line.
He spread the beast skin before Ju Ye.
"Look here, what do you think of heading back north from this riverbank next? They surely wouldn’t expect us to return by another route."
"That should be the wisest choice," Ju Ye agreed.
Although no scout had returned to report back, the absence of news was also a kind of message. The Western Kingdom could roughly estimate the location of the team, so they sent some forces from different directions to encircle and intercept them.
Li Rui wasn’t worried about being unable to defeat any group of pursuers; he was unwilling to be stalled by fighting and thus dragged into a larger encirclement.
"Li, are we just going to keep dragging it out like this?"
Kawina asked, having no objection but a bit puzzled. If they just kept fleeing when enemies came, it would be endless.
Li Rui answered, "No, I estimate the time is almost right, which is why we’re heading back north."
"What do you mean?" Rossi interjected.
"I mean, I want to observe the defense line we checked before. If there’s been a change in their deployment, or more precisely, significantly fewer manpower, it means there’s been a change on the front battlefield. That’s when it’s our time to act," Li Rui explained.
Although similar discussions had happened several times, the two assassins of the Field Clan were still a little apprehensive.
They had never seen such a grand-scale war before; in comparison, the gang disputes in the chaotic territories were small skirmishes.
After a brief rest, the team moved north again according to the plan. When they reached a mountain pass not far away, Li Rui personally went to a high point to observe, only to see that the Western Kingdom’s camp there still had guards as before, appearing heavily guarded.
"Did I miscalculate?"
Li Rui handed the binoculars to Ju Ye expressionlessly, who took a look too.
"No, Benefactor, it’s a facade,"
The Ghost General commented, "Look, most of those tents have their flaps closed. Are they all sleeping in broad daylight?"
"What do you mean?"
"They don’t want anyone to see that there aren’t many people in the camp. Covering it up intentionally while the patrolling soldiers increased actually makes them seem more nervous, like trying to hide something,"
Li Rui clapped his hands with joy, "That’s it. They want my life and wouldn’t miss such an exit. Such changes mean there’s significant pressure on the front battlefield."
Ju Ye had no concept of the "front"; he didn’t know what the Western Kingdom was like, nor the level of the Dragon Country, so he couldn’t comment.
Li Rui continued, "If we charge out from here, I’ll block any experts from the enemy army, and the rest is up to you, can you manage?"
"No problem," Ju Ye replied confidently.
The two finished surveying and headed west to prepare to lead the team in a breakout. As they were still some distance away, they heard a boom from ahead.
Without saying a word, Li Rui rushed out like a flash, leaving Ju Ye momentarily stunned before quickly following, only to find he couldn’t keep up.
There were many figures in the forest, mostly the robust Highland Demon Race and a few human extraordinaries.
A tracking unit from the Western Kingdom had found them.
It wasn’t that their planned detour was flawed, but Li Rui hadn’t expected that amidst a probable large-scale battle on the frontal battlefield, the Western Kingdom would still manage to use one of the Prophet’s skill cooldowns to track their whereabouts. Without it, they probably wouldn’t have been found here.
By this time, the battle had already ignited, entering the phase of direct confrontation.
The assassins of the Field Clan served as the main force, struggling to engage all the extraordinaries, while nearly a hundred ghost riders faced a numerically superior Highland Demon Race.
Their situation was grim because the ghost riders, when alive, had been cavalry, best at charging.
However, their resting place was unsuitable for charging, and they were suddenly surrounded when the enemy approached nearby, unable to launch a charge.
Kawina had been strictly forbidden from fighting by Rossi, but she was not one to live passively. When the two assassins were too busy to handle her, she joined the fray with the ghost riders.
Not backing down didn’t mean being brainless. Knowing her strength couldn’t match those Western Kingdom extraordinaries, she chose to fight only the Highland Demon Race.
The strengths of these demon races varied, the weakest just about level 30, similar to low-level demons in the Divine Wood Forest, while the strongest were at a super strong level 50 tier.
She chose the weakest of the demons to fight, trying to relieve the pressure on the ghost riders.
Clang!!
A sharp sound came suddenly, followed by a bang as Vince was sent flying back, landing straight on the ground, evidently overwhelmed in fierce combat.
This Western Kingdom team leader wasn’t a high-risk target, but their extraordinaries were few, and to hold on this long, he had done his best.
Seeing this, Rossi activated his ace skill, Shadow Dance scattered, an array of black blades swirling in the air. He didn’t intend to kill all the enemies with this epic skill leveled to lv5, only to force them back to aid Vince.
But revealing his ace, the opponents had countermeasures.
"Interrupt!"
An unassuming blue light flashed, forcibly interrupting the Shadow Dance before it could form.
Silence Master.
An assassin’s rare profession, an even more extreme specialist than a void breaker, lacking significant offensive power, excelling at disrupting enemy casting. Even an almost instant-cast skill like Shadow Dance can be interrupted, truly troublesome.
Rossi miscalculated; the enemy might not have high-risk extraordinaries, but their professional synergy exceeded stats on paper.
Several other Western Kingdom extraordinaries began advancing, seemingly intent on eliminating this fellow assassin first, but most things don’t go as planned.
They hadn’t approached Rossi when Li Rui darted out to intercept.
Thunder Shocking Earth!
Legendary, lv5.
In the face of this skill’s scale, unless you’re a high-risk target, all other skills look insignificant.
One slam settled, killing two instantly.
Yet Rossi didn’t relax, shouting, "Watch out for the silence!"
He warned too late; before he finished speaking, another blue light enveloped Li Rui.
This capability had a cooldown, but the opponent’s Silence Master had another skill, called Casting Recovery, which can cancel a skill’s cooldown.
Complete silence for five seconds, a formidable ability, more so if used consecutively twice, as now, even Li Rui got caught, his skills and items locked and unusable.
The remaining surviving extraordinaries were energized.
The Dragon Country face reappeared in this position, undeniably the Foggy Evil Ghost.
More than the loss of two companions, they were evidently more interested in their assumed imminent achievement.
Boom boom boom!
A series of skill lights swallowed Li Rui’s figure.
Reactions varied between grief, despair, and ecstasy on the battlefield.
However, no matter anyone’s thoughts, all shifted instantly to terror in the next moment.
"What, too weak?"
Li Rui’s voice called out from the spot.
After being silenced, he found it tough to dodge those skills, but he could withstand them.
