Chapter 87 - 87: A GAME OF CAT AND MOUSE
Fighting became exhausting. I had enough of it. My body stiff on the ground, heavy to lift and yet it was still operational. My head, I just remembered my brains were blown out by pistol standard issue, given to field agents who work for the government.
They were very secretive of their agents and even Marvin had no idea about them, however the gun Laura used suggested that she was undr their employment. How did he not know.
In my ear my com was already static, barely could make out what was being said.
'How long was out for?' I thought, it shouldn't have been. Then I had inaudible coming closer to my body, sharing a word and laughing? I guess they are just civilians.
Distant from where I was, I heard traffic going on, cars honking, sirens wailing. It was so intense that I could barely withstand the noise. It was agitating.
They walked past my body and didn't even show any care. They ignored it essentially, and moved on.
Every minute passing by, I was aware of my environment with my overwhelmed senses.
My brain was damaged and now my senses were heightened uncontrollably, causing agony on me. Every sound was too much, the smells intense and my sense of touch more sensitive than anything else.
"One, two, three, four, five... no make that twenty-five hundred seconds. No movement since i spotted him," a voice stated. The clearest voice I have heard so far through all the noise, I didn't filter it, I heard it. Someone had been watching me for almost an hour, not a civilian from their speech maybe an agent. Was he monitoring me? Why what was their goal?
Just when I thought I had time to take my break, someone walked up to who ever it was I heard speaking about me. "Anything from the target?" they asked.
"No movement in almost an hour." they responded.
"Anything else?" the other asked.
"No one from inside the building left, except for the rear entrance,"
"Okay, keep a watch out for anything else. I am gonna take a smoke,"
"Copy that."
One of them walked away.
This solo mission alone felt like it was more than it was supposed to be. It was more than I could chew.
Fuck it, you know what I chose to sleep there, I wasn't going to move anytime soon.
'Wake up. Wake up. Wake up!'
My eyes shot open and I breathing heavily, my eyes darting around the environment after raising. On my chest I placed my hands besides my chest and pushed myself up.
As I did so, I heard chatter from afar between two individuals, "I got movement," one said.
"Clear to move in," another gave clearance.
Okay, so they were watching me. Now I had to get away from them. I got back up and made a run from the street. I looked to where I heard the men speak and they were about two-hundred metres away from my location, two or three o'clock.
Clearly they had reinforcements on their way and I didn't need them tailing me, so I ran into bustling crowd ahead. I blended myself in between civilians while being chased down by agents on the pavement. The sensory overload was now calming down and this was the first time this had ever happened to me.
"Does anyone have a visual?" a voice spoke from a walkie-talkie held by a slim guy ahead of me. I was forced to take off my eye-patch in the middle of people. No one had an idea, but I noticed someone stop to look around for something, then they locked eyes on me as I passed by them. Could they have sensed my power? I think not. But I still felt unease.
By a four way while cars are driving by, I stopped by the red stop sign behind a couple of people. Intently and subtly looking around for those men.
Thinking I was safe, one of them stood beside me to my right. "Anyone sign of our target?" the voice over her walkie-talkie asked. Raising it up close to her mouth she responded, "Nothing,"
Keeping myself mentally calm was the easy part not looking suspicious was the hard part.
It was getting more and more intense as she started to look my direction and she seemed to be analyzing my face, then the light turned green and I walked away as quickly as I could.
She grabbed a hold of my arm. I stopped for a bit, "You dropped something," she said. I responded telling her I didn't have anything on me, and she let go.
As I got far away from the area, my phone rang. I pulled it out to see who was calling and I didn't recognize the number. I answered.
"We have a little problem, Captain." a voice answered. The same tone of the general I knew was the same one that called. "I got a message from them and they hunting you down. What happened with Dr. Portford?" he asked.
"She got away and Laura put a bullet in my head."
"What!"
"Shit hit the fun Marvin, and they are cutting it too close. But I gotta ask why is the president involved with the center?"
"Brent, involved?"
"Don't play dumb with me, Marvin!"
"Captain, hear me out. I had no idea that Brent was in on this."
"Oh, really? Just like you didn't know that he and the government authorized her to make bio-weapons with my fucking DNA! Cut the bullshit, Mynde!"
He sighed heavily on the other end of the call. "They didn't tell me a fucking thing, believe me. If I had known I would have stopped you from going this mission. The stakes are too high now, you gotta leave the city."
"What if they are making I don't escape, huh?"
He remained silent. "Look, I trust you on this one Marvin. But how am I going to get out of the city without getting caught?"
"Go back to the apartment, I will call you back in half an hour."
He hung up the call. I stood in the middle of the pavement. It was odd.
I felt something was wrong, Mynde never cuts the call short until I get all the info I need. So, I called Hank.
His line was busy, which was unusual and that meant something was off.
Fuck!
Where could have I gone? I couldn't go back to the apartment, it was certainly going to have agents crawling around, and I couldn't leave the city either. They boxed me in. What was I going to do now.
Think Ravedos, think.
"How could they have outsmarted you, Body?" my Mind asked.
"I haven't been outsmarted. They are more resourceful and they may have had planned this out, maybe even before my arrival or someone informed them?"
"Who could that have been, hmm? That general, the retired soldier, the doctor or the woman? Which of these are the culprit, or maybe they worked in tendon. Maybe one of them had lied about them being here or maybe not?"
"Are you certain or just speculative? I will only find out when I have the information!"
"And where are you getting it? You cannot simply waltz in to the places you had been, that would be foolish."
"Maybe I can go somewhere I had been before, somewhere only my team and I had been?"
"You have outwitted at the very last moment. But how are you going to retain that streak?"
Though it was chaotic in my head, I was surprised that I had come to a conclusion with my Mind.
Only a moment passed by and then an explosion went off from below my feet.
