Devil Equinox

Chapter 82 - 82: INNER HELL

How could Death come to sooth me over all the lost souls? Her love for me is unfathomable. I don't feel the same for her, since I love Melissa, whom has no time to see me because of her duties and the same reflects in my life. I have seen Death more times than I have spent time with Melissa and she with me.

It just feels incomparable and I should go with the one who truly loves me, right reader? But Melissa does show the most love. Why? Her not being around me all the time protects me from all the pain of facing the angels. She keeps them away from me and I deal with the demons. Some still held grudges against from the war that took place about four-hundred years ago.

The devastating loses I had caused, killing hundreds, if not thousands of them. The countless lovers and families I had separated haunted me. Every scream flashed in my mind. The anger they have against me.

Even though I had changed for their sake, some accepted my help. While the seething hatred rooted deep in their hearts, even poisoning their thoughts about me.

Tragedy I have faced losing those I was close to. My friends who were with me along the way, even the ones who held pain in their hearts and never wanted to forgive me. I didn't understand why, but I now know.

You may have heard the story that villains are born, right? Ha. Just a fairy tale that people will tell you just so you would cloud your judgement on them. Sure, many do it because they love it, but others were made to be villains by social constructs that justify what the society wants more; to follow its set rules and anyone who tries to go against them is quickly labelled an outcast.

I am not the hero everyone thinks I am. I have killed for a cause, for revenge, for the thrill, and for an objective. When you have gone against enough races, you will understand that the narrative of villains are born is nothing but a lie.

After what Dhalia Portford had done to me just because she couldn't control her anger made me remember that not all the humans I protected were good. Could I do something against her? Maybe getting revenge? Kill her? No! None of that.

Her research centre was going down one way or the other. I was going to destroy it.

My body had fully healed, and I had been brought back from the brink of death by my power. It was cold and raining outside in the dark. I was discarded in the middle of nowhere, in the wet soil with nothing.

As I opened my eyes, in the shroud of darkness of night, I stared in the grey night clouds as drops of rain fell on me. I looked to my side, and I saw an individual with their eyes open, as if they were staring. However, they were dead. One of the clones, a female with similar features to mine.

I looked to the other side another body, this one was facing a different direction. Very short hair and their neck had unnaturally bulged veins.

Was this a graveyard for the failed experiments? I asked myself. I then sat up to see where exactly I was and I hated the site. I sat on top of piles of bodies of maybe hundreds of clones, in probably a forty-metre-deep pit that was about fifty to hundred metres wide in diameter.

Carefully I crawled towards the wall of the pit. It was steep, and with how wet and muddy it was climbing out was impossible.

This got way more difficult that it thought it would. I tested the dirt nonetheless with my hands. Sticking my hand deeper every time for the wall to crumble and increase the diameter even further. 'Shit! It's too unstable.' I muttered. 'Fuck, I guess I have to fly out of here. What a fucking pain in my ass.'

The one option I tried to avoid was my last resort. With the downpour I don't if I would be able to. Looking at the edge, I estimated that it was ten to fifteen metres above me. 'That shouldn't be a far jump,' I said. I then stood on my feet and fell back down on my ass. 'What's wrong with my legs?' I asked myself.

My legs felt numb and weak. I fucking crawled just to fall on my ass standing. Shit! That drug was strong. Then again, I couldn't move my legs as much on that bed.

Then flying became the only option left. I took a deep breath and had my wings grow out of my back. The pain was agonising as they pushed and tore muscle and skin and moved aside my scapula and kept pushing against. This is the reason why I don't fly as often and not to draw attention to myself.

I looked at the cloudy and rainy night sky, as gloomy as it was, it struck with a beauty that made you appreciate them. I moved my wings up and with my strength I thrusted myself off the bodies and I soar into the clouds with every thrust.

The scene I saw above the clouds after a few moments was breathing. The full moon gleaming a spectacular blue above the clouds, the stars glittering their brightness, but they were outshined by the moon.

Then I began to fall back down, and I used the speed to glide through the air above the ground. I glided low enough above the clouds to put my hand inside and I felt the cold moist saturation of the cloud on my hand. The serenity of the scenery made me forget about what was happening down below.

That lasted a short while when I was shot down.

A bullet clipped my wing, and the pain immediately made me contract a muscle forcing my wing closer to my body. 'Shit! I was careless,' I thought as I was rapidly descending to the ground through the clouds. I pulled back my other wing and decided to fall faster, reducing my surface area as quickly as possible.

Out of the clouds, I ended up back in the rain. Below me was a forest that was outside the city a few kilometres away, by six to seven kilometres.

Rapidly decreasing altitude, I was getting closer to the ground.

With quick thinking I expanded my wings to glide through the and to decrease my falling speed significantly enough to crash land safely.

My healing had not kicked in yet, so I still could feel pain in my wing. I winced a few times trying to ignore the pain.

Fuck! I had gone too long before gliding and so, I was slightly above the tree canopy.

The pain got more intense that I even pulled them back to my body, consequently forcing me to fall into the trees. I tried to cover my face from the impact. I crashed into a number of trees that I couldn't keep of.

I hit several parts of my body. My arms, shoulders, back, ribs and bit of whiplash from hitting a branch with my head. I hit the ground coughing and gasping for air. The pain was more than I had ever felt.

From the pain, I could only assume that I broke a few bones, maybe even fractured them. But I couldn't think. I tried to ignore the pain and crawl away, but I slowly made progress.

How long could I endure all of this? This was now a mental battle to not be subdued by my physical pain. I groaned in agony, nonetheless. 'Fuck! Argh!'

In the darkness of the forest came a giggle an ominous which then turned into a screech. I struggled to look around with the rain falling on the forest floor. Then I felt a distinct stinging pain in my abdomen, I made slight adjustments to my body to look at what was the problem.

A branch impaled me. I slowly looked and around the forest floor.

Then it became silent. I could only hear the rain. Whatever it was went silent. I then tried to leave the area. I was out of luck.

Something grabbed me around my chest and flung me into a tree. I fell on my side.

I tried to open my eyes to look at with threw me. A silhouette stood there, its body was thin, its hands were large enough to wrap around and cover my chest. It didn't stand tall; it was bent over slightly and moved closer to me.

Its head was as big as its hand; it looked human like almost. From the ground in its position, it stood five metres tall. Then it opened its mouth, it opened from the middle of its face, and it opened wide, going almost round its face. It then turned its head ninety degrees, then teeth poked out – sharp and jiggered teeth –, about to engulf me.

I held out my hand to hold my gun, and when I did. I pulled the trigger. Immediately it closed its mouth and ran away screeching in pain. Through all that I tried to keep a steady breathing rate and heart rate.

My instincts kicked in and I almost stopped that.

Getting a breather afterwards was the hard part. But it wasn't impossible.

I grabbed the branch lodged in me firmly and pulled it out fast. Blood squirted out for a few minutes before I managed to stop it.

The rainwater mixed with my blood seeped into the soil. I wasn't able to stay awake for my healing to occur and I was out.

That was what I thought was my end. Alone and wounded in the middle of nowhere was what I believed to be a disgraceful death.

Sunlight hit my eyelids and woke me up. I was resting on a bed, and the sun was glaring in my eyes.

Someone brought me here.

That's when an individual rushed into the room through the doorway to the left. "Holy fuck, you are awake!" they exclaimed.
