Devil Equinox

Chapter 64 - 64: NOTHING ENDS ON A GOOD NOTE

After that I rushed to Kevins' side, he was bleeding out a lot, and I tore off part of my clothes and made a make-shift tourniquet and tied it on his bicep. I got into the truck and looked and found a first-aid kit. Took out the bandages and covered the wound after cleaning it with some alcohol. He groaned in pain as I patched him up.

"When did you learn to do this?" Kevin asked me. I looked at him and tightened his bandage.

"First-aid is one of the first things we learn as soldiers," I told him.

I helped him up into the truck in the passenger seat, got into the drivers' seat and drove off into the forest, back to the base.

Something ate me up, driving back about his team. They were killed by the demons but came back to life and were reanimated. These were not regular demons; they don't have the ability to bring dead back to life. Not even with the vilest of them, they were incapable of such.

After arriving back at the base camp, we didn't have much time. Three of the five bombs were set to explode on the island, and they were set to the same time.

I stopped where the other truck was and some of them were still around. I got out, then took out the unconscious Kevin in the passenger seat. I woke him up and he groaned. I helped him out and two of his team members rushed to help him. "What happened?" one of them asked and Kevin told them what happened.

He looked around wondered where the others went, we were told that they set the other bomb further into the island and were heading to the last location.

The situation worsened as they radioed in urgently. "We need help! We are under attack; these demons are attacking us and killed two of our men!" they said urgently.

"Woah give me that! Jimmy we are gonna help you out. Just hold on. We have to go after them!" Kevin commanded and I had to stop him.

"Kevin, we don't have time to go after them! We can't save them. We have to leave this island. Now!" I told him and he looked at me in resent.

"What the fuck do you mean leave! You want me to just abandon them like that! You don't have a fucking idea of what they mean to me!" he shouted and throw punch that easily caught.

"You are in no shape to go after them to save them. It's important that you know if you do go after them, we may all die here. I want you to think straight they are already gone, we can't help them." I told him.

"No, no, no, no! Fuck! How long do we have before the bombs detonate?"

"Uh… We have only half an hour before this island is permanently undiscoverable." One of the said.

Kevin took a deep breath and sighed. "It's fifteen minutes back to the cargo plane. Did you get word from the pilots?"

"No nothing at all." Another spoke.

"Are you on the right channel?" I asked them.

"Yes! But there's no response," they spoke.

One problem kept amassing into an unavoidable problem and it was leaving the island. Kevin had made up his mind to leave since the time we head there was slowly going away.

We had to take very little with and hopped on to the off-road vehicle and the truck. Kevin and I rode in the truck while the remaining five rode in the off-road vehicle. As we traversed to the cargo plane those demons chased after us as we were driving away.

The off-road vehicle was behind us and were surrounding them. Kevin tried to help them by shooting back at the demons. He knocked off some of them surrounding those behind us, but it was not enough. The vehicle slowed down and there was nothing we could to save them from their demise.

Arriving back at the cargo plane it was quiet; Kevin and I got out of the truck and ran to into the cargo plane. I rushed to check the cockpit and found the pilot and his copilot dead. One died from loss of blood and the other was shot in the head.

Kevin closed the hanger and I started the propellers. Looking through the broken windshield, something was rushing toward us through the forest. I struggled manoeuvring the plane to turn it around.

As I looked ahead the woman stood there watching us and held the head of one Kevin's men and she seemed to giggle and tossed the head. The makeshift runway that was made upon entry was just enough to get this plane in the air. After making a full turn I put the propeller in full throttle to build up speed.

I got it up to speed, I looked out the pilots' window to try and see what was behind and there were a lot of demons running behind us. A few seconds later I managed to get the plane into the air and flew away from the island. When I was sure we were far enough away from the island I turned the autopilot on and left the cockpit and entered the fuselage where Kevin was sitting alone.

With his eyes closed, he seemed to be asleep. "Kevin… we left the island." I spoke. But he didn't respond. I walked up to him to check on him. When he awoke, he attacked me, pushing me onto the ground. His strength increased incredibly and significantly. He turned into whatever that was. He stood there, breathing heavy and ran up to me. With my pistol I shot him in the head and he dropped to floor.

I could see his skin slowly changing colour when I checked on him. He didn't completely turn. The floor of the fuselage was pooled with his blood and then he slowly turned to ash. I dropped to the floor; my left arm was behind me my right knee raised and my right arm resting on it.

"I couldn't save him and his team," I muttered to myself.

Then the sound of the bombs setting off pulled me out of my thoughts. I walked to the hanger and opened it. I was watching the most spectacular fireworks display seeing four of the atomic bombs vaporizing the island to nothing.

It was finally done the mission was a success but at the cost of many lives that didn't need to be lost. It was hard for me to look away and not take responsibility for their deaths. I couldn't be everywhere at once.

A few hours of travelling I made it back to the last place I was, and someone was awaiting my arrival. After landing the cargo plane I got out and on to the runway. Several armed men watched me walk out and stand on the runway. A black sedan pulled up in front of me and out stepped Mynde.

"Captain it's good that you made it back in one piece." He said and looked back at the cargo plane confused. "Didn't you go out there with Kevin and his team of fifty? Why did you come back alone?"

"They all died!" I told him grimly.

He didn't need to ask any more questions, because he understood what I went through. He placed his right hand on my shoulder, pat my back and we left the runway in the black sedan.

"Look, Captain you have to take a break. In ten months, I am going to need you and your team to take on another mission but in a different city," he informed me. "You have to rest for now."

I awoke from my sleep and dreaded that day.
