Chapter 382 - 372: Planning for the Future
After a round of discussion.
The grievances and emotions belonging to this city, Chen Feng had roughly understood. During the most dangerous times, some people chose to leave, while others chose to stay and protect the last home together.
In this light, the dazed person in front of him was not entirely unaccomplished; at the very least, he had some notable courage.
Chen Feng did not offer much advice. He simply stated one thing: from now on, this city belongs to him.
Surprisingly, there was no dissenting voice around.
For Zhou Hongwei, the reason he stayed was only for the survivors of this city and to avenge his brother. Now that the city was not breached, and his enemy was beheaded, his two wishes were fulfilled. As for becoming the true ruler of the city, he never had such intentions from the start.
It’s even more so for others, although the city wasn’t breached, food supplies had long been exhausted. One could say that if not for some emotional ties, they wouldn’t even think of staying here.
At times like this, people were eager for someone to take control of T City and clean up this mess.
With zero votes against, Chen Feng thus obtained control of this city.
............
A perfectly rounded dark moon clung to the corner of the city wall, casting the Earth in a somber shade, exuding a layer of pale light; like a sleeping sea.
Night fell.
Two swift figures appeared on either side of the street, it was none other than Chen Feng and the Dark Elf.
Seeing is believing. Although Chen Feng easily gained control of this city, he needed to inspect it himself to understand its true state.
Therefore, Chen Feng had to come out and see everything here with his own eyes.
The area of this city was indeed vast, compared to the previous Economic Development Zone, it was like comparing a lake to a stream. In peacetime, being close to the port, it was the development center for nearby cities, focusing on trade and grain.
But now...
Most places had become blackened ruins, dead and desolate, like a long-dead beast nearing its final stages of decay. Clearly, from the extent of the city’s decay, only less than 60% of urban development land was utilized.
With the arrival of the apocalypse, frequent earthquakes occurred here, coupled with the rampant monsters, turning this culturally rich city into ruins almost instantly. All that remained was an empty shell, devoid of its former vitality.
The broken skyscrapers and streets filled with stagnant water from recent torrential rains demonstrated clearly that this place was at best a safe zone, not a prosperous living area.
Gazing at the desolation before them, the Dark Elf scoffed, "Is this even considered a town? So weak. What are those people even doing, owning land yet not knowing how to use it? I think all those people should be reduced to slaves; they’re entirely useless."
Even though she took human form, the Dark Elf never claimed to be human. Clearly, despite her current beauty, she was still an outcast wrapped in a glamorous facade.
"It’s not that they don’t want to. You must understand that the powers of the apocalypse are unmatched by humans. This place is close to the sea, and though it might have a decent supply of food, the energy affects tectonic changes, making earthquakes ten times or even a hundred times more likely than in peacetime. Many cities were instantly swallowed in earthquakes, so without professionals trained to isolate seismic activity and the right technology, most cities consist of low wooden houses and bungalows."
Chen Feng sighed. He had seen many ruins, but every time he passed through them, he felt a pang of discomfort deep inside. This was different from death; witnessing the fall of skyscrapers gave a sense of cultural regression and loss, even a feeling of the impending obsolescence of human civilization.
Nowadays, humans possess professional beings whose enigmatic talents can compensate for technological insufficiencies. Skyscrapers that would take hundreds or even thousands of workers to build in peacetime might only require a dozen powerful individuals, who could erect a building in a few weeks.
But then...
What value does it hold?
The energy-induced geological movements made this land extremely fragile, with tremors occurring frequently. A building constructed today might become ruins the next instant.
The most disheartening part was that with so many people in the buildings, a collapse could result in thousands of deaths, and could even lead to stampedes killing tens of thousands.
So it’s not that the professionals don’t want to build here, but rather that nature and environmental factors have already ruled out the possibility of prosperity here.
This resulted in the current scene of ruin, one part of the city being a human habitation zone, while the other was a desolate ruin, resembling an uninhabited ghost town filled with barrenness.
Bathed in moonlight, Chen Feng’s figure melted into this ghost town.
Perhaps it was because it poured rain the entire night before, the already uninhabited areas appeared even more devastated; various debris was scattered everywhere, mixed with corpses and mud, attracting swarms of flies. It was a chaotic and foul-smelling mess, indescribably nauseating.
The most speechless part for Chen Feng was the dead bodies lying there in some corners, all bitten and bloodied, with arms, ribs, organs lying on the ground, mixed with excrements, creating a confusing visual effect.
Who could have thought that a day would come when city corners would not only be occupied by drunkards but human flesh?
And the corpses were surrounded by people; their eyes were vacant and actions lethargic, mostly women, children, and elderly people.
In the past, this city was on the rise, anyone with strength could participate in building the city walls and houses, thus securing food.
However, behind seemingly fair and democratic policies, there were countless cries. For women and children without strength, and elderly people who lost their labor ability, those seemingly beneficiary policies were nothing but nakedly empty promises.
But now, as a vast amount of food was shipped away, even able-bodied adults struggled to survive, so for these women and children who lost their dependents, life was even harsher.
This city had rotted to the extreme. To restore its former glory, it must be completely overturned and rebuilt from its foundation.
This would take some time, but it would not occupy all of Chen Feng’s attention. Compared to livelihood issues, he had another major task to complete — building a port.
The sea.
This was the territory he needed to conquer in the future. Before that, he needed ships, many, many ships...
