Abyss Summoner

Chapter 381 - 371: City of Hope

City center.

Just as the Jackal-wolfman died and the beast tide army retreated, Chen Feng and the warriors beside him stepped into this unfamiliar city.

The survivors around looked a bit curious, especially those who had just stood on the city walls and witnessed Chen Feng’s strength; they appeared even more tense.

In just a few minutes, Chen Feng had used his strength to earn the respect of others.

No matter the time, people always respect the strong, so even though Chen Feng was here for the first time, his status was rising rapidly. The most obvious change was that those proud professionals didn’t even dare to look him in the eye; some even lowered their heads when Chen Feng glanced their way.

...

Chen Feng stepped into the hall.

There was no grand welcome ceremony; not even the food could be called appetizing.

Before the battle, Zhou Hongwei tried to awaken people’s confidence, taking out the already scarce food to fill the warriors’ stomachs, so now he didn’t even have ingredients to prepare for a banquet.

Looking at the large dining table, besides the meat cooked from wild beasts, there were only sparse vegetables and a few pitiful fruits, Chen Feng made some judgments about this place; it seemed this city was even more impoverished than he had imagined.

This city was not wealthy, indeed it could be considered miserable. If they hadn’t arrived, these people might have already become food for the Jackal-wolfmen.

Moreover, the city’s defense force was pitifully small. Logically, for such a populous city, there shouldn’t be only these few dozen professionals.

"Who is in charge here?"

Chen Feng raised his head, looking towards the people not far away.

Some directed their gazes at a young man. Zhou Hongwei hesitated for a moment before stepping forward.

Originally, in the city, he was just considered a poor wretch hiding behind his brother. Now he had the chance to face Chen Feng directly.

Chen Feng sized him up, seeing that he was merely a Silver Tier existence, not even close to peak level.

"You are the one in charge here?"

Zhou Hongwei was still lost in the previous battle, only reacting when Chen Feng asked a second time, then nodded blankly.

Chen Feng frowned slightly; this guy seemed a bit foolish.

Afterwards, it was a question-and-answer session. Under Chen Feng’s intimidating prowess, Zhou Hongwei didn’t hold back at all, revealing everything about the city without missing a word.

Indeed, Zhou Hongwei wasn’t a smart person, but certainly not foolish either. He understood the difference between them; rather than tell some lies that might make the other wary, it was better to reveal all, which might even earn some goodwill from the other.

The team he sent for help had returned, but previously there were eight members, and only one survived after twists and turns.

Indeed, this team before him was the reinforcements he had invited back, but he didn’t know much about the specific situation there, as he was unconscious when he arrived there. When he woke up, he soon embarked on the rescue mission.

They brought back only one message, that food there was abundant, laid everywhere to dry, and the streets were exceptionally clean, completely different from T City, where due to governance issues, it was filled with trash, and even the surrounding air was tainted with a rotten smell.

This made Zhou Hongwei fall into deep thought, besides being astonished, he felt a faint excitement; because apart from T City, there were other cities standing tall, they were not the last survivors!

More importantly, the environment there was much better than this city underfoot, according to the report from the sent team, that city’s food supply was plentiful too.

Order.

This was a very unfamiliar name.

But just now, when the beasts retreated, the warriors all collectively cheered this name. It was then Zhou Hongwei realized that Order was their new base.

Spacious roads, clean grounds, orderly rooms.

Due to the apocalypse, most people were busy struggling for survival. In fact, Zhou Hongwei hadn’t seen what a tidy city looked like for a long time.

Due to hunger, this city beneath his feet was like a broken cocoon, long devoured into a pitted mess.

Governance?

Without knowing when one might lose their life, most lived like zombies, beyond eating their fill, nothing else could interest them.

Under such circumstances, where the living environment gradually worsened, it was a very common phenomenon.

Day by day living in insecurity, who has extra time to waste on picking up trash?

So upon hearing about Order’s clean and orderly environment, Zhou Hongwei was immediately surprised. If possible, he genuinely wanted to see the other city himself.

He had only one purpose: to relive... civilization!

T City’s civilization had been devastated by disasters; during the recent siege, huddled together survivors, besides those from peaceful times, were weary commoners. Among them were also highly educated or well-connected young folk.

But as disasters kept striking, their courage was long gone, their ideals and aspirations had long been destroyed by these catastrophes.

T City had already lost vitality.

Even if they fend off one wave of bugs or beasts, next time, more creatures will surge towards them; boundless darkness had accustomed these people to ruin.

Zhou Hongwei had become used to this place, indeed to the extent that even he was transforming bit by bit into the extremist he once loathed.

His brother’s death was the last straw, Zhou Hongwei, under immense pressure, stayed here, on a larger note, unwilling to see survivors massacred, on a smaller note, hoping to personally avenge his brother.

Yet with Chen Feng and Order’s arrival, he reconsidered, the mind once clouded with hatred began to gradually awaken, he wanted to see what the city called Order really looked like.

Whether it was really like subordinates said, food piled up, surroundings tidy, no apocalypse-induced decadence on faces, rather a longing for the future.

As long as one can touch civilization, instead of living like a savage, Zhou Hongyuan would already be satisfied, the apocalypse had altered much of his values.

To live.

To live well.

Aside from Zhou Hongyuan, for everyone in this city, their demands were truly not much.
