Taming the Beast World with a Frying Pan

Chapter 321: A Game Much Bigger Than Me

For a split second, time seemed to slow down. A small black mamba launched itself upward from the writhing mass of scales. Its jaws unhinged with a sharp pop, catching the hot, coconut-glazed fish flawlessly mid-air before swallowing it in one smooth, undulating gulp.

Ren blinked, standing near her bubbling stockpot. She expected the snake to hiss in pain from the heat, but instead, the mamba settled back onto the ice, flicking its tongue with what looked suspiciously like deep culinary satisfaction.

"Okay, who’s next?" Ren asked, a wide grin breaking across her face.

She picked up her wooden tongs and grabbed another fragrant fish from the rich, simmering broth. She tossed it toward a cluster of vipers. A spotted python darted forward, snatching the prize.

"Two points!" Ren cheered, genuinely enjoying the bizarre spectacle.

It was admittedly a bit terrifying to stand inches away from thousands of deadly snakes, but feeding them kind of felt like playing an arcade game. She quickly fell into a rhythmic routine. Poach a dozen fish in the creamy, spiced coconut milk, pull them out while the meat was still firm, and toss them to the hungry crowd. The guards ran back and forth like overworked delivery boys, hauling fresh firewood and fetching more baskets of raw fish as Ren cooked batch after batch.

The icy cavern filled with the savory, mouth-watering aroma of roasted garlic, ginger, and sweet coconut. The menacing, unified hissing of the horde slowly faded, replaced by the soft, contented shifting of very full, very sleepy reptiles.

By the time Ren emptied the final woven basket, her arms ached, but the sea of snakes had transformed entirely.

Their bellies were comically bulging. Unable to maintain their defensive, coiled postures due to their massive food comas, the snakes began to move sluggishly. With slow, lazy slithers, they parted down the middle, creating a wide, clear path that led straight to the imposing stone doors of the vault.

"Well, look at that," Ren dusted off her hands, feeling incredibly proud of her diplomatic catering. "The path is clear. Lead the way, your majesty."

Syris stared at the parting sea of stuffed reptiles with amusement. He could have made the path himself and ensured the snakes don’t attack Ren, but he enjoyed the spectacle. He untied a carved jade serpent key that he always kept secured to his waist.

He guided Ren down the cleared path, ensuring she wouldn’t accidentally step on a stray tail. Stepping up to the towering doors, Syris pressed the jade key into a hidden indentation. A deep, grinding rumble echoed through the cavern, and the stone doors slowly swung outward.

Ren peeked inside, hoping Syris would have done some cleaning up since the last time she was in there.

Instead, her jaw dropped. It was somehow more of a mess than before.

It was filled with towering, disorganized mountains of glittering raw gemstones, ancient bone carvings, piles of shimmering molted snake skins, and random, shiny rocks. It looked like a dragon had sneezed its hoard all over the room and refused to clean it up.

"Oh my gosh, Syris," Ren sighed, stepping over a pile of glowing purple crystals. "This place is a disaster."

’It isn’t much better than Vex’s treehouse!’ Ren added in her thoughts.

At the very least, Syris had the decency to dedicate an entire room to his chaotic mess, whereas the Fox Shaman just kept all sorts of nonsense scattered around his single living space!

Syris ignored her critique. He immediately waded into a pile of scrolls and carved tablets, tossing things aside as he searched for something.

"What exactly are you looking for?" Ren asked, picking up a beautiful, polished ruby the size of an apple and admiring it in the dim light. "Maybe I can help you find it?"

"There is no need," Syris replied, not looking up from a pile of gold trinkets. "It is a bit hard to describe what I am searching for. Just amuse yourself with whatever catches your eye."

Ren shrugged, happily wandering through the piles of treasure.

Meanwhile, in a damp, hidden cave located far below the castle, Vex was busy playing nurse.

The Fox Shaman knelt on the cold stone floor beside a pile of furs, his orange tails twitching with rare anxiety. He held a wooden bowl filled with crushed, foul-smelling medicinal herbs, trying to coax the mixture past Vara’s pale lips.

The white tiger female was in a tremendous amount of pain. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps, her chest heaving as she fought against the fever consuming her body. Despite the freezing, damp air of the cave, her pale skin was slick and shining with a thick sheen of sweat.

"Drink this," Vex instructed, his tone lacking its usual smug cadence. He pressed a cool, wet lump of moss to her burning forehead, attempting to lower her skyrocketing body temperature.

Vara weakly pushed the wooden bowl away, her hands trembling. Her eyes, sunken and shadowed with dark bruises, glared up at him.

"Kill it," Vara begged, her voice a raspy, broken whisper. "I told you... just kill it. Cut it out of me."

Vex ignored her desperate plea, setting the bowl aside. He looked down at the protruding bump of her stomach. The skin was stretched tight, and the feral energy radiating from the unborn cub was palpable.

Suddenly, Vara’s belly moved.

It wasn’t just a kick. A distinct shape pressed firmly against the inside of her taut skin. Vex leaned in closer, his orange eyes narrowing in pure fascination.

It was a hand. A tiny, perfectly formed beastman hand with small claws pressing outward.

"Well, look at that," Vex whispered, his brows furrowing as he stared at the little imprint. The cub was currently in its half-human, beastman form. For an unborn infant to shift forms inside the womb was entirely unheard of.

"Why are you so erratic, little guy?" Vex murmured softly.

Acting on a strange, uncharacteristic impulse, Vex slowly reached out. He placed his warm palm directly over the spot where the tiny hand was pressing against Vara’s stomach.

The exact moment his skin made contact, the frantic thrashing ceased. The cub gradually calmed down, the tiny hand slipping away from the surface as the cub settled back into the depths of the womb.

Vex pulled his hand back, genuinely amazed. Was the feral madness just a symptom of the cub’s terror? Was it simply afraid of the dark, suffocating environment and the sickness of its host?

He looked away from the stomach and met Vara’s gaze. She was watching him with tired, puffy eyes, her expression twisted into a sneer of pure loathing.

"Your cub," Vex told her, his voice quiet but echoing in the damp space, "might just be the strongest beastman this world will ever see. To shift forms before drawing a single breath... it is remarkable."

He reached out, his thumb gently caressing her sweaty, feverish cheek. "I cannot have you dying before this cub is born, Vara. You must hold on."

Vara spat on the stone floor near his knee. "If I survive this," she hissed, her fangs bared in a weak display of aggression, "the cub will die. Any opportunity I get, the very second it leaves my body, I will kill it myself."

Vex smirked. "With what strength? You can barely lift your head, let alone murder a newborn apex predator."

"As long as I can move a single finger," Vara countered, her chest rattling with a wet cough, "it is possible."

She let out a weak, humorless laugh, her glassy eyes locking onto his. "Do not forget the favor you offered me, fox. We made a binding pact. If I die in this cave, you will suffer consequences far worse than death."

Vex’s smirk vanished. His jaw clenched, his bright orange eyes flashing with sudden, raw anger. He leaned down, bringing his face mere inches from hers.

"Do you truly think I want to do any of this?" Vex asked, his voice a dangerous, low hiss. "Everyone in this miserable world thinks I am the big, bad fox. The liar. The manipulator. The thief who steals for his own amusement."

He looked her dead in the eye, dropping the facade entirely. "But in reality, just like everyone else in this rotting world, I am simply trying to survive."

Vara blinked, her fever-addled brain struggling to comprehend his words. She didn’t understand what he meant.

Vex stood up. He paced over to the jagged opening of the cave, looking out over the swamp waters. He tilted his head back, staring up at the clear sky, where the faint, pale outline of the moon was still visible against the blue.

"Do you believe in the Moon Goddess?" Vex asked.

He didn’t wait for her to answer. "Of course, you do," he continued, a bitter edge clinging to his words. "The White Tiger clan worships her. You pray to her for strength, for guidance, for fertile seasons."

Vex turned around and walked back over to the pile of furs. He crouched beside her, a dark, cynical grin twisting his handsome features.

"What if I told you," Vex whispered, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial hush, "that she is the reason you are like this? That it is because of her that you are suffering in this cave, rotting from the inside out?"

Vara’s eyes widened slightly, confusion mingling with her pain.

Vex chuckled, a hollow sound devoid of any real humor. He reached out, softly caressing her tangled white hair. "Just like me, little tiger, you are nothing but a pawn. We are all pieces on a board, forced to play our parts in Selene’s grand quest for some fun."

He paused, looking at his hand resting against her hair.

"I have never told anyone this," Vex mused aloud, a strange vulnerability flickering in his eyes before he quickly extinguished it. "Maybe I am feeling particularly open today."

He rose gracefully to his feet, dusting off his loincloth.

"Rest now," Vex instructed, turning toward the cave opening. "I am going to go find your doctor. She promised me a very healing fish soup for you, and I intend to collect it."

With a swish of his three orange tails, Vex slipped out into the shadows, leaving Vara alone in the freezing dark.
