Chapter 297: Surrounded
He dashed, moving toward them like a rocket. The man immediately unleashed multiple blasts at Riven, but he evaded each one and then lunged at the lady.
"You are really cocky to think you can take us that easily," she yelled and then attacked with a thrust. Aren dodged that with ease, watching the blade of the spear graze past his head while his eyes locked on her as he attacked.
She very quickly tried to retreat and attack again, but tendrils shot from the ground and latched onto her, refusing to allow her to take a step back.
He was now too close, too close for her to evade and for her partner to attack, because the blast would hit her as well.
She needed to find a way out of this right now, but Aren wasn’t going to let her think. He went for the kill with a powerful slash. The blade grazed her neck as she leaned back with everything that she had, only a drop of blood fell from her neck and hit the floor. She froze after that, stunned at how she had almost lost her life.
"Snap out of it," the man yelled, but it was already too late as Aren kneed her in the guts. She arched and coughed blood, getting thrown back.
Now that she was out of the way, the man saw it as the best time to attack and take Aren down, but Aren was already in motion towards him and before the man could do anything, he used a wyvern blast from his palm and slammed into the man’s chest, throwing the man back.
He hit the ground and skidded back, before propping himself up to his feet, eyes burning with an intense hate for Aren. He wanted to take him down, so without even looking, he unleashed another attack. This one was wide and covered a pretty large area. The blast ripped open the ground and sent debris flying everywhere. There was no way that Aren could avoid the attack in his mind, but he already did.
From above, Aren looked down, seeing the blast from up there. He pulled back his hands and attacked, unleashing a claw strike. The man looked up too late. He moved, but the claw strike slashed into his leg and cut the leg clean off.
"Arghhhhhhhhh," the man screamed and fell to the ground. He grabbed his leg in pure agony, his scream sounded like the cries of a dying goat. He instantly started hyperventilating and sweat formed on his body.
Aren landed on the ground. He kept his eyes pinned on the man while at the same time his shadow sense watched the lady as she rose to her feet and picked her spear from the ground. She grabbed the side of her ribs, she had seemingly taken a big hit.
The governor looked at the state of the two people that he had hired and he couldn’t help but yell.
"You have to be kidding me!" His body arched forward, veins bulged on his neck and his hair flew in all directions, much like the saliva that left his mouth.
"The both of you are level forty, how the hell did you lose to a new awakened?" he thundered even harder, his breathing got heavier, clenched fist and a tensed face that was turning red. He would blow at any moment if he was a ball.
Aren looked at the governor for a few seconds, something was running through his mind, so he decided to speak. "This is a pretty lousy city," he said it clear as day, he was somewhat appalled by the defense of the city. It was basically nonexistent to someone as powerful as Aren. If he chose to overthrow, he would be able to.
The governor was stunned for a moment after hearing that. He opened his mouth to speak but shut it, he clenched his jaw so tight you could hear the grinding of the teeth.
"You really think this is some place that you can walk in and walk out with what you want? You fugitive!" The governor roared.
"Why is he so eager to take me down? I get that I’m the number one enemy of humanity, but the enthusiasm to take me down has crossed the level of being normal.
Could this sketchy man really be that devoted to humanity that he would be this pissed about me?"
Aren could not wrap his head around why, so he decided to ask a question.
"What do you gain for taking in Shadow, aside from the whole ensure the survival of humanity, what do you gain?" Aren asked.
The governor paused when he heard that question, the silence that stood between them now was heavy.
"Pretty smart to catch on," the governor said. "You are really sharp, so I’ll tell you for that reason alone. The bounty on your head, Shadow, is the greatest ever seen, far beyond what money could buy, one of the greatest weapons, one that the sacred palace holds, the Spear of Fate.
A weapon that even the Wargod and the likes have only ever touched a few times in their life, crafted from the remains of an actual god, and handed to humans long ago.
That’s the weapon that the sacred palace have placed on the line, that’s how important it is to take you down, and why I ensured that no matter what, if you should ever enter this town, you would never leave." After he said that, he spread his hands apart and then from outside of the compound, people from the town started walking up, all carrying weapons, trueborns and awakened alike. It was a complete surrounding, and Aren was at the center of it all.
"I see," Aren muttered, his heart was heavy now, not because he was about to die, but the fact that what he was about to do here would be the greatest crime that he had ever committed.
