Chapter 295: Baited
"Can I get the gate?" Aren asked.
"Hmm, indeed, it’s pretty expensive though," the governor replied.
"I’m willing to pay for it," Aren said.
The man heard that, he raised a brow, Aren was in urgent need of it, he could tell.
He walked to one of the boxes at the corner of his room and popped the lid off, taking out a portable gate that looked far better than the one the old man wanted to sell. He walked over to Aren calmly and then handed it over to him.
"Take a look," he offered, and as Aren stretched his hands to grab the gate, the man pulled it back, "but first, I’d like you to see who is under the mask and who I am selling to," he said.
Aren froze, then shook his head, "that’s not going to happen," he said in response.
"Haha, you don’t seem to understand, you can either walk away with this after buying it at a very good price if you show me your face, or you can get beat up so bad that you can’t walk and I still get to see your face at the end, so it all depends on what you choose," the governor said with a straight face, he wasn’t joking around.
"Sigh, had a feeling that it would come to this," Aren muttered. He looked at the governor and then spoke.
"There are also two things involved, I walk out with the portable gate after paying for it, or I beat the hell out of everyone here and get the gate regardless, so pick your choice."
"I see, so you want to play it rough, Shadow," the governor suddenly said. Aren didn’t expect the man to call him that and it genuinely shocked him. He looked at the man with wide eyes and he simply gave Aren a smug smile.
"You might believe you are smart, but you turned out to be pretty predictable," the governor said.
Aren looked at him with eyes that could melt steel, but he did not make a move yet. He watched in silence.
"Everyone knows that you, being the number one fugitive and enemy of humanity, you’ll surely want all the escape methods, including a gate. It was only a question of when you try to come and get it, and you have," the governor explained.
"And there is a reason that I am governor, that’s because my ability gives me the eyes that can see all. I see your truth before you arrive and I know that you are Shadow."
"Tch, I didn’t calculate people having such abilities. Tch, this is bad," Aren thought. He looked up and drew a deep breath.
"Since you know who I am, then you should know that I will not be backing down or walking out of here without that gate."
"I do know, and that’s why I have ensured to prepare for it," he said and then looked at the man in the office. "Get him," he said and instantly the man rushed at Aren, but Lucy reacted faster than the man could move. She twisted her body fast and her fist slammed into the guts of the man, throwing him back through the air. He slammed into a wall and broke through it completely.
He slammed into the ground hard in rubble, Lucy stared at the rubble, waiting for the man to rise again.
Aren on the other hand stared at the governor who held the gate.
"I’m taking the gate one way or the other," Aren said and then summoned his ancient devourer. He looked the governor right in the eye. "Hand it over."
"Hahahaha, like it would ever be that easy," the man declared. He threw the gate into the air, watched as Aren’s eyes followed it and then pulled something from his pocket, an orb. He threw it and it hit his chest, instantly exploding on impact and hurling Aren through the air. Aren flipped and landed, no single damage on him. He had sensed the attack and when the orb was thrown he used shadow armor to cover himself.
When the smoke died down, Aren looked and the man had vanished. The window was open also so Aren knew that the man had jumped. He looked at Lucy.
"Take care of what you can inside here, I’ll go after that old fart."
He rushed to the window and jumped out, but as soon as his feet touched the ground he was surrounded. He looked ahead and saw the governor rushing away.
"I don’t have the time for this," Aren said. He immediately summoned Riker and Fang. "Take care of things," Aren said and they immediately attacked all the men that were standing there.
Aren bolted after Riker created an opening for him. He needed to catch the man and leave soon because if the man managed to tell people, or get more people to know, then the entire city would be out for him.
What Aren failed to consider was the fact that the governor could be baiting him and indeed he was, because the moment Aren stepped out of the compound, a blast ripped through the sky like thunder, headed right for him.
He moved out of the way fast and evaded the attack, barely though. It slammed into the ground and what followed was a deafening explosion that shook the air. The blast slammed into him and threw him back. He flipped and landed on the ground.
His shadow sense picked up someone coming, so he looked up, his eyes meeting with a lady in red, and a spear in her hands, the attack flowing in one path towards his chest.
"Shit," he cursed and pushed himself up, managing to parry the attack fast, but was still knocked back. Her strength was massive despite her smaller body. Aren almost fell.
He looked at her and she was already coming for an attack again, making a large sweep with her spear that gathered so much speed and power, going for his head.
