Chapter 294: The Governor
Aren looked at the men, he could tell something wasn’t right, he scanned the man from top to bottom and then stepped forward.
"Do we have to follow you to purchase it?" Aren asked with a certain calmness that contrasted to the tense situation.
The man looked at him, then let out a calm chuckle, "you’ve got some guts, well I’ll say, not sure if you are not panicking under that mask." He said, he leaned back and turned around.
"Come with us for the portable gate," he said and started walking, his men following behind, but before he got too far he stopped and looked at the old man.
"Don’t let us catch you selling anything else, it’s going to be more trouble than you can afford to handle."
Aren nodded at Lucy and then kept walking, they both knew that something was definitely wrong here, but they followed, maybe it was because Aren believed that no matter what situation that he was facing he would be able to get out of it for sure.
They moved through the market, people cleared the way for the group to walk past, not wanting to even collide with them, it told Aren a bit about who they were and their influence without even hearing a word.
They finally made it out of the market and into the main street that led to the house at the center of the city where the governor stayed.
The walk was quiet and long, but they finally arrived after ten minutes of walking. The manor was massive and really out of place from the society that they were in.
Sure the other houses looked pretty decent, but this one was far too outrageous, it was made of prestige carved marble and blocks, tiled roofs and large trees inside the compound, tons of guards walked around, dressed in the same uniform as the men that had come to carry them.
’These men, they somehow knew the right moment to come there and find us about to buy a portable gate from the man, as if they had all planned what was about to happen, that’s definitely suspicious.
Something is certainly wrong, but all I need to see is the gate, once I see the gate I’ll take it, no matter what their plan is, I’ll get it and get out of there for sure, hopefully this works out,’ Aren thought to himself.
The gates opened to them, pristine metallic gates that shined under the sun, well polished and made with very intricate details, it was one of a kind.
The men in uniform inside looked at them as they walked past, their eyes scanning the two of them to ensure that they were not any unsafe people.
Aren stood out more, he was wearing a mask which was the first bad sign, but they couldn’t talk about that, since he was brought here by someone higher than them.
The paved floors led to the front door. And as the wooden doors opened, Aren expected to see what would look like a beautiful interior, but rather what he saw was something else.
"What in the hell?" he muttered.
The inside was nothing more than a gang house, with men in nothing but tank tops and trousers yelling and talking, swords and other weapons in their hands, some were barechested and didn’t feel the need at all to get dressed, they walked around, cigars in their mouths and drinks in their hands.
The thick smell of weed clouded the air, it made it hard to even see properly.
"Follow me," the man leading them said, then all the other men following walked off, leaving Aren and Lucy in with the man.
He led them up the stairs and into the upper floor where instantly he noticed the change, it was like the air up here was instantly filtered, the soft smell of herbs and flowers took over.
Aren used shadow sense and there he noticed that several soul energy formations had been set to keep everything that was downstairs away from the top floor.
’So he lets them do whatever they want while keeping a calmer life, typical.’
They arrived at the door to the office, the man knocked twice and then opened the door, walking in first and waiting for them to follow inside and they did, he shut the door behind them immediately.
A man sat inside the office on a chair and a file in his hands, his head was buried inside the paper and so it was hard to see his face.
But he was decked in a pristine black suit with golden accents, and it matched his office, it was a nice blend of antique, mysterious and fascinating.
A shelf stood to the right filled with what seemed to be fossils excavated from the domain. Under each of them was a small golden slab and the name of the fossils engraved. But that wasn’t all, as seated on another shelf were books and antique artworks that would surely have time dated to hundreds of years ago.
Beyond that was how well the office was also arranged with everything in the right place, some stacked boxes to the other edges of the office labeled fragile, a table with a pot of tea on it and a scented herbal candle.
The man finally looked up, his grey hair showed first and then before his well shaved and sculpted face, it was safe to say he was a pretty handsome man despite his age.
He looked at Aren and then smiled, "you are the one that wants to purchase a portable gate in my city?" He asked, but he already knew the answer.
"Yes," Aren replied calmly.
"Ahh, I see, pretty curious to see someone in a mask come for such delicate tool, it does raise a few brows don’t you think!" The man asked.
"If you are trying to say I lose the mask then forget it," Aren said plainly.
"Hahaha, a sharp one," the man replied.
