The Weight of Legacy

Chapter 153 - Some Things Should Be Known

Something was moving. Swaying. It was closer to a simple awareness of movement, as opposed to any particular sensory feedback. And he was indeed aware long before anything grew even remotely coherent.

Veit opened his eyes to darkness. Cold air filled his lungs, though he could not recall intentionally drawing breath. He blinked instinctively, his thoughts far too clouded for anything to immediately click. The damage he had failed to truly register was already gone in its entirety—distantly, he knew he should have understood what this mindset meant.

After all, he was no stranger to it.

Yet the fog remained. It wasn’t that his attempts at thinking clearly failed, so much as that he was utterly devoid of any desire to. By itself, it wasn’t peaceful—there was neither peace nor beauty to be found in nothingness, not even in the fading memory of it. Just absolute suppression of the panic that would have been natural.

Suppression of death.

Veit jolted upright—tried to, anyhow—only to collapse right back, his surroundings somehow too constraining for him to sit yet boundless. He could feel nothing around himself, no surface he rested upon, yet his senses simply ended within less than half a meter in each direction.

Of course this had felt familiar. It was far from his first time.
