Chapter 157: Experimental Subject
"Are you okay over there now?"
Lin Ye finished his cola and asked.
"I'm fine. That mirror is very convenient to use, but it's a shame it can only be used for one day."
Little Ye passed Lin Ye a piece of fried chicken through the glass.
"Now I'm going to the Public Security Bureau to replenish weapons and ammunition while also kidnapping the Public Security Bureau Director. Do you have any suggestions?"
Lin Ye took the fried chicken and took a bite. The tender, spicy chicken was juicy and quite delicious.
"Hurry up. I heard screams."
Little Ye suddenly stood up and walked out of the fast food restaurant, her reflection disappearing from the glass.
Lin Ye finished the fried chicken and ice cubes, then quickly headed downstairs.
As the elevator passed the third floor, he faintly heard screams. Lin Ye: There's a situation on the hotel's third floor. Be careful.
Zhao Yu: Received.
After leaving the hotel, Lin Ye borrowed a sports car from the roadside. Recently, he occasionally felt the urge to race.
Driving straight to the city center, Lin Ye used his mental energy to sense nearby spiritual energy fluctuations.
Before long, he found the Public Security Bureau headquarters located in the city center.
Lin Ye entered the Public Security Bureau directly without any disguise.
"What can I help you with?"
Seeing Lin Ye, the receptionist in the lobby asked.
"I'm a peripheral member taking jobs. Recently, our team received a missing person task. We've found her, but her condition is somewhat abnormal. We're not sure how to handle it, so I wanted to ask what to do next."
Lin Ye made up a story with the receptionist.
"Ah, I know that task. Wait a moment, let me check... You need to take the elevator to the third floor to Captain Bill's office."
The receptionist didn't doubt Lin Ye's identity at all and opened the elevator door for him.
"Thank you."
Lin Ye smiled and thanked her, then took the elevator upstairs.
The smooth elevator door reflected Lin Ye's figure, which distorted and transformed into Little Ye moving through an alley.
"Is it still chasing you?"
Lin Ye asked.
"Yes, but it's fine. It's starting to have bad luck already."
Little Ye replied.
The elevator reached the third floor. Lin Ye got off and quickly found the captain's office.
Knock knock.
Lin Ye knocked on the door. The building materials of the Public Security Bureau headquarters contained some substance that blocked mental energy. Through the door and walls, he could only sense a small area.
"Come in."
A man's voice sounded from inside.
Lin Ye pushed the door open. There was only Bill alone in the captain's office.
"You said you found the target?"
Bill was an unkempt middle-aged man with a serious face, receding hairline, and a third-tier spiritual energy user.
"Yes, her condition isn't quite right. We don't know how to handle it."
Lin Ye discreetly sensed his surroundings. This was the Public Security Bureau - if he didn't plan to kill everyone, it was better not to alert others.
Plus, there were surveillance cameras everywhere - really not a good place to take action.
"What kind of condition?"
Bill looked at Lin Ye warily, as if guarding against something.
"You know better than me what condition! She killed my team members, and those monsters too! You must tell me what's going on!"
Lin Ye suddenly became emotionally agitated and spoke loudly.
"Shh, keep your voice down."
Seeing Lin Ye so agitated but not taking further action, Bill actually relaxed his guard and pulled Lin Ye to a spot far from the door, speaking quietly.
"What exactly is that thing?"
Lin Ye continued probing, though he didn't even know what he was asking.
"I don't know either. The higher-ups told me to capture that woman as soon as possible. Your task was also assigned by the higher-ups. I only know that woman has triggered some violent incidents."
Bill turned his back to the camera and spoke in a low voice.
"Who are the higher-ups? My friends can't die in vain. I must investigate the cause of this incident and make those responsible pay. You must help me."
Lin Ye also turned his back to the camera and whispered.
"...The Vice Director is involved in this, but I'm not clear about the specifics. There might be other important figures above."
Bill wasn't very certain either.
"Help! Save me!"
As the two were talking, screams and cries for help suddenly echoed in the hallway.
Bill nervously drew his pistol and aimed at the door, showing no intention of going out to check the situation.
"Do you have a map of the Public Security Bureau? Where are the Director's office and the Armory located?"
Lin Ye ignored the screams outside - he still had important business to attend to.
"What are you planning to do?"
Bill asked warily.
"You can hide here, but I need to search for evidence. The journey might be dangerous, so I need weapons."
Lin Ye said straightforwardly.
Bill hesitated for a moment but finally told Lin Ye the locations of both places.
"Thanks."
Lin Ye left the captain's office. There was nothing outside the door, but there was a trail of blood drag marks on the ground. Whatever had been dragged away was beyond saving.
The Armory was on the first floor. Lin Ye, wearing a captain's uniform he had acquired, used Bill's access card and smoothly arrived outside the Armory. Many people greeted him along the way, and Lin Ye responded to each one.
"Who are you?"
The uncle guarding the Armory looked at Lin Ye suspiciously - he didn't remember this person in the bureau.
"I'm an expert sent from above to handle abnormal incidents. Open the Armory."
Lin Ye stared at the uncle, Little Ye's figure reflected in his glasses. The uncle nodded mechanically, then turned and opened the Armory door.
The Armory was filled with various spiritual energy firearms and some other auxiliary equipment.
Lin Ye closed the Armory door and began filling his loot space.
After loading all the weapons and equipment, Lin Ye left the Armory and took the elevator directly to the top floor. The Director's office was at the very end of the top floor.
To Lin Ye's surprise, there was no one in the Director's office - not even the Director's secretary was there.
After searching the entire office, Lin Ye only found some documents shredded by a paper shredder in a trash bag.
From those shredded papers, Lin Ye found half a torn document page - someone had intentionally hidden it in the trash bag.
"Yongsen Laboratory, special experimental subject, capture failed, city-wide experiment, first phase..."
The information on the document was incomplete. Lin Ye could only make inferences based on guesses and took a photo of the document page to send to the group.
Lin Ye: I found this document page in the Director's office. Now I'm planning to go to Yongsen Laboratory to check the situation. How are things on your end? I acquired a batch of firearms - if you need them, we can meet up first.
Li Qihou: Damn it, I knew the Public Security Bureau had problems. The mission target might be that experimental subject. Just approaching her triggers some dangerous mutation. Zhao Yu got affected - we're dealing with it now. Be careful yourself.
Lin Ye: Do you need my help?
Zhao Yu: No need. The mutants in the city are increasing. We're having some trouble here. You'll have to explore the laboratory alone. You'd better find a way to avoid mutation quickly, otherwise we can't approach the target at all.
Lin Ye: Leave it to me.
